Eddie Pepper has stirred debate in the golf world after suggesting that Tommy Fleetwood might benefit from having a more experienced caddy, especially after two painful near misses on the PGA Tour. Fleetwood came heartbreakingly close to victory at last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship just a month after a similar late stumble at the Travelers Championship. Both results extended his unwanted record as the PGA Tour’s highest career earner without a win. In both tournaments, Fleetwood had been well positioned to close out the win, but faltered in the decisive moments. Speaking on the Chipping Forecast podcast, Peril cautiously questioned whether Fleetwood’s current caddy, longtime friend Ian Feno Phiney’s, has the ultra-inning mentality needed to get him over the line. I need to be very careful what I say because I love Feno, Pepper began. But in the interest of fairness, because I’ve been critical of Harry Diamond with Rory in the past, I think it’s fair to suggest that a slightly stronger, more experienced Caddy could help Tommy get that win. I say this from experience. I remember what Mick Doran did for me when I won in Kadar. Phiney’s and Fleetwood are far from unsuccessful as a team. Together, they’ve enjoyed multiple wins on the DP World Tour, including the 2024 Dubai Invitational. However, their success on US soil has remained elusive. Peril made it clear though that he wasn’t calling for Fleetwood to replace Phineas. Look, Feno, I’m sure, adds way more to Tommy than we could all imagine. They’re close friends and always have been. But if we’re talking purely about winning in those pressure situations, there are people out there who could help him do that. That’s just the reality. And I’d have said the same about Harry Diamond and Rory last year. Fleetwood won’t have to wait long for another shot at breaking his PGA Tour drought. He and Phiney’s will be back in action this week at the BMW Championship, the second event in the FedEx Cup playoffs, where they’ll look to finally turn a close call into a long- aaited victory.
