Many of the top professionals in the world will be in Mississauga next week when the city hosts the CPKC Women’s Open golf tournament for the first time.

The professional golf championship event run by the U.S.-based LPGA takes place Aug. 20-24 at Mississaugua Golf and Country Club, where a “world-class field” of 156 athletes will attempt to get the best of the 6,661-yard, par-71 course whose history dates back to 1906.

Tournament organizers said the final field was determined on Wednesday — with four additional play-in spots to be filled at this Monday’s final qualifier — and includes five of the top 10 players in the world and 19 of the top 25 as rated by the Rolex World Golf Rankings.

Among the world’s best who’ll try to tame the fairways and putting greens in Mississauga over next week’s four-day tournament are No. 1-ranked Jeeno Thitikul (Thailand), No. 2 Nelly Korda (U.S.), No. 3 Lydia Ko (New Zealand), a three-time CPKC Women’s Open champ and 2024 Olympic gold medalist, No. 4 Minjee Lee (Australia) and No. 9 Haeran Ryu (South Korea).

They’ll be joined by Brooke Henderson (Smiths Falls, Ont.), the winningest golfer in Canadian history and 13-time LPGA Tour winner. She heads a field of 13 Canadian entrants in the tournament, also among them Mississauga native Savannah Grewal.

Grewal, 23, whose brief pro career to date includes a fourth-place (tie) finish at the 2024 Blue Bay LPGA tournament in China, gained her LPGA Tour status last year.

Defending CPKC Women’s Open champion Lauren Coughlin (U.S.), currently ranked 14th on the LPGA circuit, will also compete next week in the 51st edition of the national tournament.

The field will be competing for the $2.75 million (USD) purse, with $412,500 going to the winner.

“We are very excited to begin play next week with a world-class field of talent at the historic Mississaugua Golf and Country Club for one of Canada’s signature women’s sporting events,” said CPKC Women’s Open tournament director Claire Welsh, adding golf fans across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area are in for “a special championship.”

Founded in 1906 as a nine-hole course before being extended to a full 18 holes three years later, the Mississaugua Golf and Country Club has hosted six Canadian Open championships as part of the PGA Tour — in 1931, 1938, 1942, 1951, 1965 and 1974.

Located on Mississauga Road steps north of the QEW, it has also hosted many Canadian amateur, women’s and senior tournaments over the decades.
