Keegan Bradley will have to decide whether he’ll choose himself for this year’s Ryder Cup team, which would make him the first playing captain in the past 62 years.
Patrick Cantlay and Rickie Fowler both believe he should do so.
“Fortunately, I’m not in that predicament,” Cantlay told reporters. “Keegan, however, is in that predicament. If I was the captain, I’d pick Keegan. I think he’s played great.”
“Yeah, I would pick him too,” Fowler added. “I think it would be hard to find really any or many Americans that would argue that point.”
The United States will carry a 12-player roster to face the European roster on Sept. 26-28 at Bethpage Black. Scottie Scheffler, J.J. Spaun and Xander Schauffele have already accumulated enough points to make the team, and the top six golfers in points after this week’s BMW Championship will also be on the team. Bradley will then make six captain’s picks.
He has already said that Bryson DeChambeau would be selected, while Russell Henley and Harris English are likely locks as well. All three are currently top six in points.
Bradley is currently 10th in the U.S. points standings, with Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Ben Griffin, Maverick McNealy and Andrew Novak making up the remainder of the top 12. Players like Brian Harman (13th in points), Cameron Young (14) and Cantlay (15th) also will likely garner consideration, especially if Bradley doesn’t pick himself.
