J.J. Spaun reflects on a hard-fought playoff loss at the 2025 FedEx St. Jude Championship. After missing a tricky seven-footer for the win, Spaun discusses the emotions, the putt’s misread, and how he’s developed confidence on long putts throughout the season.

From missing the Playoffs last year to becoming a major champion and top-5 player in the world, Spaun explains how his “free rolling” mindset has fueled his success in big events.

It was a hard fought battle. What are the emotions for you? Yeah, I mean sucks to miss a sevenfooter, but you know, tricky read and pulled it a little bit, but yeah, I hung in there the best I could and, you know, he beat me to the hole first and, you know, just wasn’t meant to be. Yeah. Um, you weren’t in the playoffs last year. Now you’re a top five player in the world. You’re a major champion. You’re contending in big events. What a difference has a year made for you and what’s it like living this right now? Yeah, it’s obviously made a huge difference. I don’t know what’s gotten into me honestly. I think I’m just content with what I’ve done in this game and now it’s just kind of like free rolling and uh just trying to win and I think that’s a freeing mentality to have. Uh 17 was a 20footer. You made the long one in the playoff. Some really clutch long putts this year. Is there a secret to it for you? Um not sure. I just I’m I’m seeing the lines much better. the speed with my putter is a lot better. So, I’m not worried about mishhitting it, you know, with the technology in the putter that I use. So, uh it always carries good speed and you know, speed is king when it comes to making longer putts and it’s obviously helped this year. And finally, just the last one, uh Miss Reed, wrong line or what happened? Yeah, we were kind of guessing. We couldn’t tell if it was going to break right or not. We played it like left center. I just lack of commitment and tugged it and I tried to firm it just cuz, you know, the next putt was good. And I think the firming it, you know, closed the face down and I just pulled a little bit. Yeah. Well, that’s it. Yeah. Thank you. Good week.

  1. Imagine JJ gets played against Rory and Rosy paired together in Ryder cup, the two guys he lost to in playoffs this year 😂

  2. I have so much respect for JJ and his career comeback, for Justin and his work Ethic, and for Fleetwood who was willing to speak to NBC right after another tough round!!! Gracious, humble and full of great sportsmanship!!!

  3. It’s a pleasure to watch you play. In my short golfing time I’ve hit more people than greens. Keep up the great work.

  4. Obviously after the US Open he cemented his place as a major champion, but today being in the mix at the end he truly looks like he belongs at the top part of the game.

  5. He was disappointed, uff.

A year to he would have been super happy…his appetite for win has grown exponentially.

Maybe 2,6 M dollars helps bit to swallow this loss, after good fight.

  6. He won the US Open and doesn’t give a shit. The next tournament that matters is the Ryder Cup then The Masters. Everything else is a tune up.

  7. These questions are so idiotic; asking about long putts and how do you do it…?..c'mon, spud spaun is in a groove and playing the best golf of his life. Spud spaun ain't gonna be anywhere next year; and how do I know this…?…it's golf…speefy Xander morikawa fowler….all these guys are done; barring a hiccup or two, they're nice golfers but will be supplanted…done. but, nobody is more done than spud.
