Tommy Fleetwood opened the 2025 BMW Championship with a bogey-free 5-under 65, making him one of only two players to avoid a dropped shot on a challenging Olympia Fields layout. Despite admitting to some loose driving after the rain delay, Fleetwood managed the course smartly—using his mini-driver on key holes and capitalizing on opportunities.

Coming off recent disappointments where he couldn’t quite close out wins, Fleetwood spoke about the importance of maintaining perspective, enjoying the privilege of being in contention, and continuing to learn from each chance to win. He credited his consistency this season, strong putting, and the work of his team, while acknowledging the only missing piece so far is a victory.

Fleetwood also praised Robert MacIntyre’s remarkable 62, noting how impressive it was given the difficulty of the course, and reflected on his own surprise at going bogey-free. With a solid start, Fleetwood is looking to build momentum heading into the weekend.

Tommy, five under, bogey free today. How would you sum up that round? Yeah, I couldn’t ask for much more really. I um did a lot of things well. I actually just saying there when I I felt like when I I came out after the after the break, I actually drove it uh quite poor. Um didn’t hit a lot of fairways on on 16 and 18, I went down to my mini driver. I was just a bit more comfortable with that. Couldn’t reach 16 the par five anyway. So that was a a good club to for me to hit and not force it. And uh and then I felt like 18 was a bonus. I feel like that’s such a tough finishing hole. But um yeah, overall just to have a day where I felt like I got almost as much as I could out of it. I was really happy to start the week with that. Uh just coming off of the disappointment of last week, how were you able to kind of just try to put it behind you and new tournament and everything? Well, you just keep going, don’t you? I um said at the time there’s there’s so many there’s so many uh I guess layers to it when you are disappointed and um you know recently especially getting myself in into contention and into position and and not uh being able to finish it off. I think the easiest thing to do is uh is yeah um you know let that get to you or be down about it. Um you know what a huge week this is. what about next week? Um just massive opportunities ahead of you. So um you know there’s really no point in you know yeah it’s it’s it takes effort to see the positives and um you know make sure you prepare properly for this week and you go into this with a great mindset. But um like I said at the time I said it at Travelers said it last week best possible scenario for me is that I get myself back into contention and I give myself a chance to get a chance again. I I’ll keep learning. I’ll keep trying to put myself up there and uh that’s all I want to do really. Today was a great start to that, you know, but it’s only one round. Um, plenty more a lot more golf to play around a tough golf course, but um I just want to keep, you know, trying my hardest and playing good golf. Um, like I’ve been a pro for I don’t know, I don’t know how long. I’m not going to do the maths, but, you know, I’ve had my fair share of playing rubbish. Like I’ve, you know, I’ve spent weeks playing terrible. Um, you know, uh, so playing well and being in contention is a is a privilege. You know, you got to enjoy those times. So, while I’m playing well, kind of enjoy it as well. Tell me, what are you what are you doing well that you weren’t last year? Why are you playing this well? Thought I played okay last year, Doug. Yeah, I mean, I’m not You’re now the second player disparaged, but Well, that’s that’s very harsh. What did I do wrong in 24? Um, no, you’re at that you’re at that level of, you know, of putting yourself there, which is what everyone Yeah, exactly. And, um, it’s exact that it’s where everybody wants to be. And, uh, sometimes the game is just going for you. like I am playing well, putting well. Um, and yeah, sometimes the game just flows and you really want to make the most of of those times really. Sometimes you feel like you’re doing everything right and you just look at the scores and there’s guys that are shooting great scores and you don’t understand how they’re doing it because it’s not happening for you. Um, and yeah, at the moment I feel like I’m playing uh some really good golf and I’m shooting some good scores. Um, it’s tough to put your finger on it. I think I’ve had a really, you know, good solid season and uh yeah, the one thing that it has lacked probably is a win so far, but there’s been amazing consistency and I feel like I’m doing great work with great people around me and um I just want to continue to do that and enjoy it while it’s going well. You talk about you playing well and then someone shooting a great score. It was around three, it was around four, we had the rain break, you’re playing a lovely round of golf and you look up. Did you see the man from Obin at like eight under and wonder what was going on there? I don’t know. I I uh would love to see uh the highlights of this round really cuz um like we you know for sure when we came back out course was a lot softer. Um, so we did have a chance of shooting a score, but I, you know, to what did he finish with quite a few birdies? Maybe six in a row. Six in a row. 29. That helps. Um, 60 footers. I was I mean, he was only two under before that. I mean, he wasn’t doing that great. Um, uh, yeah, just that that’s an amazing round of golf. Um, and I think sometimes there’s just, um, like how how tough this course is. I don’t care, you know, when we came out, whether it’s soft, whether the conditions have eased up or whatever. I think uh sometimes you see rounds where it really just show how good like PJ tour players are sometimes. And uh that for me, like if you’d, you know, played the course or walked the course this morning and then said somebody’s going to shoot 62, you know, ridiculous really. So, um just shows how good like so many of these players are. And great start from Bob. Are you surprised at all that you’re just one of two rounds today? I’m surprised there was any bogey free rounds in including myself. I’m surprised in myself. Uh so yeah. Um again like again to go bogey free run there’s really really good like I couldn’t ask for much more in terms of that. I I think I made I made like two or three really good parses but apart from that I you know did a lot of things well. Um, I got away with it off the tea as well a lot. Like coming out the rain had made the bunkers like so smooth and you know I was driving it not great. Kept hitting it in the bunker but bunker was arguably better than the fairways at times. There was no mud on my ball. It was sat perfect. Um, you know so so I I did get a bit lucky at times with that but you make the most of that you know and and uh so yeah I’m very surprised that Who was the other bogey free? Bob Bob wasn’t even bogey free. Pathetic. Thanks, Tom. All right, I’m going to go check out your 24 record now. Excuse me. Yeah, I thought 24 was a pretty good year, but see
