The fate of this backwards shot. Will it be glory or disaster? It’s round two of the players championship and Matt Cooar’s T-shot has found a spot so awkward it’s almost too risky to swing at all. When Coochar and his caddy arrive, they quickly realize the danger. The hole is close, but one wrong move and the ball could roll straight into the water. A par save could turn into a penalty in seconds. After some discussion, the caddy suggests the unthinkable, a backwards shot toward the green. Not exactly a move you practice every day. Cuchar rehearses, carefully controlling his stance and swing, then takes the shot. The direction is perfect, but maybe too much power. The ball lands on the green, but starts running and running. Finally, it stops safe, leaving him with a makeable putt for par. The look on his face, that’s the expression of a man who just dodged disaster.
