The grass comes up as Laurel Highlands’ Kayden Smith tees off during the TriCADA Golf Tournament on Aug. 8 at Nemacolin Country Club. Smith was instrumental in the Mustangs’ victory over Connellsville on Wednesday.
Kayden Smith took medalist honors with a 2-over-par 38 to help Laurel Highlands open its season with a 215-225 victory over visiting Connellsville in Section 2-3A boys golf action at Uniontown Country Club on Wednesday.
Sevi Vecchiolla followed Smith with a 39 and the Mustangs also got a 42 from Dan O’Neal, and a 48 from both Ryan Revak and Damon Revak.
The Falcons (0-1, 0-2) were led by Hunter Konieczny and Toby Soltis who each carded a 43 with Wade Bryner right behind with a 44. Rounding out the scoring for Connellsville were Mike Roscart (45) and Nicky Farrell (50).
Frazier 227, Geibel Catholic 237 — The Gators’ Seth Dolan fired a 1-under-par 36 to claim medalist honors but Geibel fell to the host Commodores in a Section 8-2A match at Linden Hall.
Mason Ritz paced Frazier with a 4-over 41 and Eli Cernuska shot a 42. Also scoring for the Commodores were Nash Fouch (45), John Sinchar (48) and Logan Solomon (51).
Following Dolan for the Gators were Aiden Holt (45), John Hess (46), Luke Kalivova (51) and Zander Zimmerman (59).
Albert Gallatin 234, Ringgold 241 — Evan Callaway shot a sizzling 3-under-par 33 but it wasn’t enough as the host Rams fell to the Colonials in a Section 2-3A match at Rolling Green Golf Course.
Ringgold’s Evan Anderson had the second-best score of the day with a 40 and was followed by Cole Komonich (48), Ethan Rahr (60) and Alexander Benny (60).
Tyler Felio was the top golfer for Albert Gallatin with a 42 while Clay Smith and Cami Williams both shot 47. Also scoring for the Colonials were Garrett Snyder (50) and Logan Diamond (58).
Carmichaels 211, Brownsville 248 — Connor Lapana was the medalist in the Mikes’ Section 3-2A victory over visiting Brownsville with a 1-under-par 36 at Carmichaels Golf Club.
Eli Hastings followed Lapana with a 3-over 40. Rounding out the scoring for Carmichaels (1-1) were Jayden Kerley with a 43 and Anthony Post and Chase Ankrom who each shot 46.
The Falcons (0-2) were led by Benjamin Vojacek and Dominic Capan who both turned in a 46. Also scoring for Brownsville were Ava Rohland (48), Adam Vojacek (51) and Hunter McDonald (57).
Jefferson-Morgan 226, Beth-Center 270 — The Rockets’ Urijah Teasdale continued his strong performance in the early part of the season with a 1-over-par 37 to help his team to a Section 3-2A triumph at Greene County Country Club.
Jefferson-Morgan improved to 2-0 in section and overall play.
The Rockets’ Miles Sowden carded a 45, and teammates Brayden Ellsworth, Jack Shaffer and Jaymison Robinson all shot 48.
Parker Amos and Austin Kurowski both shot a 50 to lead the Bulldogs (0-2, 0-2). Jacob Nopwasky and Ryan Krosko fired 56s, and Greyson Selesto had a 58.
Mount Pleasant 210, Derry 251 — Austyn Gross secured medalist honors with a 39 in the Vikings’ Section 2-2A win over the visiting Trojans at Norvelt Golf Club.
Hunter Snyder was one shot behind Gross with a 40 for Mount Pleasant, Nico Pisula shot a 42, Tanner Frye carded a 44 and Darren Kinneer rounded out the scoring for the Vikings with a 45.
Cody Williams topped Derry with a 45 and was followed by Cam Thomas (49), Bryson Johnston (50), Lucas Grohal (53) and Devin Hauser (54).
Belle Vernon 199, McKeesport 233 — Jordan Mocell and Jack Edwards turned in scores of 35 and 36, respectively, to spur the host Leopards to a Section 2-3A victory over the Tigers.
Girls golf
Southmoreland 200, Connellsville 259 — Kendall Campbell’s 47 put the Lady Scotties in a good position for their non-section victory at Pleasant Valley Golf Club.
Paige Gunderson fired a 49, and Kearlyn Fedorko and Riyah Younkin each shot 52 for Southmoreland (2-0).
Addie Richter led the Lady Falcons (0-1, 0-2) with a 57. Isabella Nussbaumer carded a 65, and Maddie Bigam (68) and Layla Rupp (69) closed the scoring.
Ligonier Valley 237, Geibel Catholic 259 — Addi Witcoski carded a 47 as the host Lady Rams triumphed over the Lady Gators in a Section 1-2A match at Linden Hall.
Haley Robertson had the next best score of the day with a 57 for Ligonier Valley and was followed by Ruby Smith (65) and Sarah Skovira (66).
Emma Larkin and Mallory Clemmer were the top golfers for Geibel (0-2, 0-2) with a 61 and 63, respectively, and Paige Dolan was next with a 64. Nolace Petrosky added a 71.
