ECCO C4 V FOOTJOY PACKARD LX SHOE REVIEW
I’ve had Ecco shoes for a long time, all the different models, but, back in the day it was Footjoy – always Footjoy and with the addition of the modern classic that is the the Packard LX, is there now finally a reason to switch – or how about both? Find out here what I think, in another in depth review on both the Ecco C4 and the Footjoy Packard LX.

Hello and welcome to Golf FM. This is a shoe review. Haven’t done one of these for a while. Feel like I’m sitting here reading the news or something. Sitting at a table. It’s weird. I haven’t done a shoe review. Used to do a few. Done a few before. If you look up there, I maybe put a link for one or two that I did a few years ago. I quite like shoes. I’ve got a long sort of history of being into shoes. If you ask my family about that, they’ll tell you how many shoes go on holiday and that sort of thing. It’s absolutely ridiculous. So, I do like my shoes. And the question here is, I’ve been an Echo man for a long time. I’ve been Echo pretty much for the last I don’t know, must almost be 10, 15 years. I don’t know. It’s maybe it’s at least 10 years I would say. I’ve sold them in the shop. I’ve I’ve championed them. I’ve I’ve said I’ve had a lot of faith in Echko. I really like them. But this shoe here, this FootJoy Premier Packard LX caught my eye if I’m being honest. I used to wear these sort of shoes all the time, the sort of classic look. And for years recently, it’s been this type of thing. So sporty, technologically advanced looking shoe. And just something about the look of this made me think, you know what? I fancy going classic for a bit. I used to get classics back in the day. We used to do FootJoy and it back in the day when the classics were actually classics. In fact, I’ve got one for you. I kept this one because I really liked the the sort of look of it. This is back in the day when they were handmade. I don’t know what goes on now, but you used to get a little slip in the box signed by the person that had actually made them. So, you actually had a real person making your shoes. I don’t know what goes on there, but these had leather soles. This was like the modern really highly advanced one where had actually rubberized bit, but you used to have to oil this bit to keep it supple, but they’re solid. And that’s what that basically is based on. Actually, I just want to weigh this to see what it’s like because that’s one of the big factors here. And we’ll get on to that in a minute. But I just want to see what the weight of this classic is. It’s actually says US 92, which might mean it’s fractionally bigger than that cuz that’s an eight. It’s not quite a fair test, but let’s see. 597. Wow. 597. I’m going to write that down. Hang on. Anyway, so the question is, am I going to change from Echo to Foot Choy? And I’ve been wearing this one and I’ve probably got shots of it that I took last night at Gullan of me using the one I’ve got at the moment. And I’ve ordered this. This came in for me and I’ve got this and I’ve been wearing this as well. So I’m pretty much set that I’m getting this right because I wanted to test it as well. But the question is, am I going to change longterm now? Is this is this a step change? Am I going am I going to foot joint from Echo? And that’s what this video is about. So to run through a wee bit about the shoes each I’ll do FootJoy first. Foot joy premier Packard LX pretty sure it’s the top of the tree as FootJoy are. Now it is I’ve got a little bit of info here. So we’ll have a go through this. It’s box leather rich new buck leathers life shield technology premium full grain waterproof leather. So there’s a lot about leather there. And basically what I can glean from that load of information is that the leather’s good quality, right? I think that’s what they’re trying to say there. It’s also got leather that is treated at source to be waterproof, but it also has a membrane underneath that lets heat out, but stops water getting in. So, it is should be extremely waterproof. The tongue actually is just a normal kind of set tongue. On the Echo, it kind of is sewn up so the water can’t actually drip down. This just has a normal looking tongue. It’s all nicely padded inside with Ortholite insoles and all the rest of it. And there’s Eva midsole, if you have any idea what that actually means. Basically soft and comfy, but also provides quite a lot of stability when you’re walking. So almost like an oldfashioned shank in the middle that gives you a bit of stiffness, bit of rigidity so that when you walk, it’s actually almost aiding you when you’re stepping up. Versatle unit. So it’s got hard bits, soft bits, soft bits for gripping on like tarmac and roads and really hard surfaces on the golf course. And then this the firmer bits for going into the grass. So should provide good traction. 2-year warranty on this as well. doesn’t use Gortex or anything like that, but um I would imagine that the waterproofness of this will be really good. 453 grams in a size eight and that is equivalent of two large chicken breasts. And this one is 52 g and that is the equivalent of a large burrito. That’s what came up on chat GPT when I asked what food weighs this amount. That’s what I got. Okay. So, that’s what I’m going with. So, this is like walking around with a large burrito on both feet. And that’s like walking around with two chicken breasts on your feet. If that helps you to understand how heavy these are. But do you know what I’m most surprised about is how heavy this is. That’s 10.82% heavier according to chat GPT as well than that. And when I got these, I just assumed these would be like solid, heavy, well-built, traditional sort of feeling shoes, and they would automatically be lighter than the Echos. I did not see that coming. And to be honest, what I did last night was I swapped around shoes, which is the weirdest thing I’ve ever done. Took took my old pair of those out on the golf course with me and at points changed my shoes while I was out in the golf course. Never ever done that before. There was nobody really about. It was about 8:00 at night out on Gulla number two, so there was nobody really there, but it’s just bizarre. But it gave you a really good feeling of how they differ. And the biggest thing you notice from Premier Packard LX to the Echo is how soft the Echo feels compared to this. Now, I know this is new and it would mold to my foot and get a wee bit softer, but this feels like a well-built solid crafted shoe by some sort of cobbler in the 1920s. It’s just manufactured it out of the best quality leather and the finest materials in the land and and yes, it’s a little bit firm to start with, but it softens with your foot and if you have it over years, you know, it just molds to your foot and your everything’s the most comfortable it can be and you can’t break it basically. Whereas this felt really quite soft to me. Now, normally when I’ve worn this shoe, it feels really supportive because of this section here. you feel like your foot goes down below that and yeah, you haven’t got a lot of movement when you’re swinging. It kind of keeps you holds you in place. And I still think that’s true, but it was just funny going from that to that how instantly softer this felt than that. This still feels quite comfortable, but I felt like this edge was just almost hitting my ankle a bit and it still at this stage when it’s this new, it feels quite firm in there. So there’s a definite feeling of that feeling like an oldfashioned classic as opposed to this just feeling like almost a bit like a trainer. I missed out some of this the tech on this. Obviously this has got boa the boa lacing system and I really like the boa lacing system. I think Fjoy do do it on their one. It’s at the back. I never liked at the back as much. I don’t think it looks as good. They need to engineer it into the front or the side or something cuz I I think that looks absolutely fine. big boil at the back sticking out just doesn’t look right to me. Anyway, that’s my opinion. But I do like the Boa system and I would pick boa over laces any day of the week. And actually, that is one thing on these that you have to watch. These laces are like waxed, especially when this shoe’s new and it’s not quite supple and over my foot enough. It almost feels like you can’t get the laces tight. It’s almost like they want to slip away. you almost feel like you need to go to like lower quality laces so they’ll actually grip each other a bit more. I think that will get better over time and they didn’t come undone, but like trying to do a double knot for instance was really hard because they’re they’re not that long and then I was trying to do a double knot to get it to so it didn’t slip out at all. And it’s just a mess. I wasn’t happy with it. And then with that you’re just going That’s the noise it makes. Actually, I’ll do it. There you go. That’s the noise. And that’s you done basically and it’s tight. Anyway, I’m still trying to get to the technology on this. I’m not going to go too deeply into it because it doesn’t matter that much. This has got surround. Nearly said Gortex surround sound there. Next thing I’ll be trying to plug it into my TV or something. The Goretex around is obviously the air goes in underneath and can keep your foot cool from below as well as Gortex being in the upper and letting hot air out and cooling keeping your foot at a nice temperature but also obviously keeping rain droplets out. That’s called the exhaust grid. That section that’s what that says on the information and it has basically this biome last. So it’s anatomical natural motion fit. Yes. just got that right for stability as well. So it’s a lot a lot of shoes are like this now cuz I think they did a lot of laser analysis of people’s foot and so what they do now quite a lot quite often is make the back of the foot a little bit narrower going into a slightly wider area the forefoot so the foot can relax out and spread out but it’s held tight at the back by the heel section because the last thing you want is for your heel to be slipping up and out down all the time. managed to happen all the time with shoes I got cuz I used to always just buy shoes that were too big. It was as simple as that. And people still do that. They buy shoes in the shop that are comfortable, really, really easy to get into and comfy in the shop. And especially if it’s something like that with really good quality leather, it just gets bigger and bigger the more you wear it and more supple and more relaxed and your foot start slipping. You don’t want any slippage when you’re buying them new. You want them to go as tight as you can sort of bear without them ramp your toes ramming up against the front. There shouldn’t really be any slipping at all in the heel when they’re in the shot. There you go. Good advice there. Free advice. So yeah, that’s got a lot of technology built into it. It keeps you really stable during the swing and really good walking comfort. Soul, you know, doesn’t have the spikes. I think this is another little thing which I was interested in was the fact that you are getting soft spikes in this and you know these are worn on tour a lot. Those will be worn on tour as well I would think but certainly that sole unit will be on some of the Echo Tour players. I haven’t noticed this sole being anything other than really good grippy on all surfaces, but if you were playing tournaments, which I’m not really now, there was always something in the back of my mind that I wanted a spike cuz I just wanted to know that I wasn’t ever going to slip. And with something like that, it was always slightly in the back of my mind that I was going to slip maybe if it got really wet or something. But having said that, I’ve been wearing these for years and I have not noticed it being a problem. And I I’m playing on quite hilly courses sometimes in the wet and I’ve never noticed it wanting to slip or anything like that. The grip is really good. You can trust this. Even though it takes a bit of believing, if you haven’t grown up with that, you’ve grown up with spikes, soft spikes, and you think surely that’s more grippy. Well, there’s not much in it if there’s anything at all is my honest opinion. But the thing that surprised me with these is the weight. And I have felt at times that this shoe should be lighter than it feels. It looks like it should be ultra ultra lightweight. And for it to be 503 g as opposed to 453 g. It’s disappointing if I’m being honest. I didn’t expect it and I’m disappointed. And I suppose FootJoy should be pleased with themselves that they’ve managed to construct something that looks like it should weigh a ton and actually isn’t. It’s nice and light. So, I’m going to put these on back to back, one foot each, and I’m going to stand on the table. And I’m going to hope that it doesn’t collapse cuz it’s just a cheap IKEA table. And one of the legs is a wee bit dodgy, but I feel like if I stay still, I’ll be all right. So, I’m going to go for it. Okay. So, the next shot you see will be me. Actually, you know what? I’ll leave it with me climbing onto the table because it could be absolute YouTube gold if this goes wrong. All right, let’s just do it. This has taken longer than I thought this review, but then I’m not known for my speediness when it comes to reviewing golf products, right? See, this is me doing this up, right? Shouldn’t have my feet on the table. And it’s a big no no. I’m sorry about that. See, I’m trying to do a double knot and I can’t do it. So, I’ve given up on that. Can’t do a d It’s almost impossible to do a double knot. And the reason why I’m doing a double knot is because it feels slippy. It feels like a single knot is going to slip out. Right. So, that’s on both feet. Right. Here we go. Wish me luck. Right, there we go. I’m up. Just can’t move around too much. So, don’t expect me to go walking around here. Okay, so how do I feel the difference standing gingerly on an IKEA table? Wasn’t what the shoes were designed for? Has to be said. Well, the the Fujo noisier on an IKEA table because of the soft spikes. That’s them expanding. And you know what? The soft spikes expanding and spreading out almost gives a sensation on a hard surface of being really quite soft. There’s not a lot in it in the cushioning stakes. I’m just pressing into the heel. There’s not a lot in it. I’m getting slightly worried about this table. It’s all right if I get off. I’ll maybe walk about on the ground cuz I I feel like I need to walk around. Okay, I won’t do it on this. Right, I’ll get off. Easier said than done. There we go. Right, let’s do some walking around. So, I know I’m quite far out of shot and everything, but it’ll give me a good idea back to back. Um, there really isn’t a lot in it. I thought last night that the Echo felt softer the minute I put it on. And when I feel them on either foot like that, there isn’t a lot in it. They’re really similar, actually. Wow. Did not expect that. Right back to the table. So, after that scientific test of standing on a table and walking around in shop, what she would I recommend out of this and can I justify both? Cuz that’s what I was wondering about. Can I justify both? Cuz I’m in this job. I’m expected to have good equipment. It’s not that big an ass to have two different pairs of shoes like this that are actually physically pretty much the same color. I still like the look of this a lot. I still think this Echo is a really, really nice shoe. I think what I’m going to do is have a season with the Foot Joys only. I’m going to change to FootJoy for this season and I’m going to see how I feel about at the end. I’m not a short wearer, right? And I feel like this shoe is a better short shoe. It still looks fine with trousers as well, but this is is brilliant with trousers. This loves trousers. I don’t think it’s quite as amazing a short shoe. I still think it can look good with shorts if you’re into wearing shorts when you play golf. I know a lot of people are. I’m quite unusual that I don’t like wearing shorts when I play golf, but I just don’t. And I’m not changing my view on that. I just don’t like the look when I look down and I’m trying to putt and chip and hit shot. It just it it feels weird to me. I don’t like it. And I don’t think it looks that great for me. I think it looks smarter with trousers. Anyway, that’s a whole different story and I know there’s going to be huge a huge backlash about that if I keep going on about it. So, I know shorts are really popular. Anyway, so back to this that that’s my decision. I think as much as I like this, I’ve had a pair that are almost identical to this for about the last couple of years cuz that’s how they have lasted a long time. And for for me to have a pair of shoes for 2 years is quite good because it tends to be that I have to go with the latest and greatest model. The thing is they haven’t really changed that. They’ve just changed the colors a wee bit. And the same could be said for this. They haven’t changed a lot of this as well. There’s some really nice options in this with beige here and gray. And it’s a classic look that’s never really going to go out of fashion. So, I really like the look of this. I think it’s really smart. I think the the classic look in the golf shoe is kind of back in. I think you’ve seen it a lot on tour as well. And I’m happy with this. I think especially when the weight consideration is is taken into account the fact that it’s 10% heavier. This is a great shoe. And I actually have to say this this exhaust grid and the surround Gortex thing. I used to wear a black pair in the shop and okay, it is all day that I’m wearing it, but my feet used to get hot in them and I do suffer from getting quite hot feet, but I thought with this exhaust grid it was going to feel like a fridge down below here and it didn’t. This shoe felt solid big and a wee bit hot at times. I mean, that’s like wearing it for 8 to 10 hours, more than that sometimes. So, it’s not really designed for that. Although, some of the professional tours aren’t far off that for around. So, I wouldn’t I wouldn’t say that that would be a deciding factor cuz you might think, well, what about the the air getting in there? Surely it’s a lot cooler than that. Well, so far, no, I haven’t felt that. So, that wouldn’t be a determining factor. Neither would be this holding me in place business because these feel absolutely fine to swing in. They feel quite supportive and solid and I don’t notice that I’m missing this section here. So yeah, I think it’s a a win or certainly a change for me for FJoy this year. I’m happy with that. I’m not going to get these. These are going to go back into stock even though I really like them. And I’m going to stick with the Fjoys until the winter when I might. They might be looking a bit dirty and I might need something else. But I might even end up with a black pair of Packards, Premier Premier Packards, because I quite like them. So that’s it. Hopefully that’s given you some advice on these if you’re thinking about changing to these. They’re both the same price, by the way. Left that bit out, £189 each, so it’s not cheap, but they are pretty much the same price everywhere you look. And that’s it. So there you go. All sorted. Shoe review done. If you’ve got any questions, put them in the comments and I’ll get back to you. But once again, thanks for watching and I’ll see you in the next one.

Been buying Footjoy for 35 yrs & have never been disappointed.. quality
I wear the Packard FootJoys in black , they took about 6 months to wear in properly.
Very waterproof , only once had issues but that was in heavy rain looking for a ball in long rough down by the trees on the 3rd. But it did come through where the laces are , and I would think every shoe is vulnerable there .
But very good grip and now extremely comfortable.
I’d been a Footjoy man for 30 years. Never totally comfortable but certainly well made. Bought a pair of Premiers maybe 3 years ago. Much lighter than the Dryjoys of old but much less padding inside and everything felt cheaper Laces broke in no time. Shoes made in China too. Pinched my toes after a few hours on the course and decided to try Ecco. Bought a pair of S3’s and H4’s both super comfortable – made in Europe btw. I can’t imagine going back to Footjoy now and my guess is you will be back in your trusted c4’s before the year is out.
Fraser.. another quality watch.
Sarcasm can be pure art when you deliver it correctly.. 😂
Keep the comedy coming.
Always prefer spikes and trousers. Totally agree about the feel of shorts over the ball
