The Town of Amherst is seeking members for the newly established Cherry Hill Working Group (CHWG), an ad hoc town committee responsible for advising the Town Manager on the long-term viability and management of Cherry Hill Golf Course.
Interested residents should submit a Community Activity Form: amherstma.gov/CAF
Applications will be reviewed beginning September 2nd.
Cherry Hill Golf Course, located at 323 Montague Road, is a 9-hole municipal golf/recreational facility managed and maintained by the Amherst Recreation Department. In addition to traditional golf, the town recently worked with local disc course designers Sam Dibble and Pete Charron to offer seasonal disc golf (also known as Frisbee golf). During the winter, when there is sufficient snow on the ground, the property can also be used for nordic skiing.
Town Manager Paul Bockelman said, “Cherry Hill is a valuable asset for the Town of Amherst. However, it is essential that we assess the long-term viability and fiscal sustainability of the municipal golf course. We hope to settle on the shared goals for this important property based on information and community needs and values.”
The goal is to determine if golf operations can and should continue to be provided by the town and to determine if these golf operations can be and should be self-supporting.
The CHWG will provide advice and recommendations about the long-term viability of golf operations at Cherry Hill Golf Course, innovative strategies for course management and fiscal sustainability, and alternative/compatible uses of the property. The goal is to determine if golf operations can and should continue to be provided by the town and to determine if these golf operations can be and should be self-supporting.
The CHWG will be composed of five (5) voting members including two (2) current members of the Recreation Commission and three (3) residents appointed by the Town Manager. There are no specific qualifications required for resident members beyond an interest in the future of this property. However, at least one resident member must have expertise in financial analysis.
Committee service will conclude upon submittal of a final report, no later than June 30, 2026. This final report will include in-depth analysis and robust recommendations for various topics including: Land Acquisition and Legal Constraints, Purpose and Mission, Finances and Operations Review, Recreation Role and Community Benefit, Five-Year Financial Plan, and Evaluation of Alternative Uses and Disposition. The committee is expected to submit a progress report to the Town Manager by December 1, 2025.
