Are Fresh New Wedges in your future?
Today I do a direct comparison between the Milled Grind 4 from TaylorMade and the brand new Milled Grind 5.
What can we expect from a direct comparison between the two clubs and which type of player should be looking at getting into new wedges?

In today’s video, we’ve got the brand new Mill Grime 5 versus I actually have a brand new Mil Grime 4. This is the 56 that will be coming up against 56, but in the 60s, I’ve got two brand new ones, stickers peeled off. We’re going to go through a test, show you with clip data which one spins more, how they work, and how you can improve your wedge game. The full swing comes into play to look at the spin rates, but it’s interesting to see the difference of grooves, when they fall off, when you need to look at new ones, and why those mil grime five grooves could be right for your game. Scoring wedges can be played by every level of player. If you want to improve the short game is the lowest lying fruit, the Mil Grind 5 is well worth a look. There’s a ton of bounce options. We don’t cover that in this video, but we give you everything else you should look for if you’re comparing it to your Mill Grind 4. Mil Grind 4 versus the brand new Mill Grind 5. We’ve managed to snag an absolute spanking 60 mil grind 4. Still has the tape covering that raw face. Of course, underneath my right arm, I’ve got my two mil grind fives. So, we’ll start off with revealing the grooves, talking all about what we have there versus the mil grind 5. If I put the 60 versus the 60, straight away, you’re going to see a little bit of a difference here in the shape. So, the wedges are going to have a slightly different shape to them. Are they going to have a different spin to them? I know spin is so important to anyone out there who’s looking at a brand new wedge, but the belly of the wedge is a little different between the four and the five. Another huge thing as you look at it is that the five says forged on the hoszle. Forged is huge. It’s a big one in the wedge feel category. You’re going to get a bit more feel out of this. Let’s reveal in the mill grind five here these grooves. The grooves have been changed slightly. It has the raised micro ribs going on them in there. But how the saw enters in the mil grind five on the corner of both groove entry points toe and heel gives you a slightly different shape when it comes down into the actual groove. So you’ve basically got an area that you have to fill with your groove and the five gets there differently to create more spin. Are we talking total on that? We’ll find out because we’re about to hit some shots and give you a test. So, in order to do this, we’ve thought long and hard of the best way, and we’re actually going to go into my clip data at this point, and we’re going to have a look at the practice plan and the what to work on. We’re going to go all the way down to approach play, and we’re going to go to a wedge ladder, 50 to 100 yards. So, you’re looking at nine golf shots. Let’s see how we get on on the wedge ladder, but we’ll also call out then the spin. So, normally when you do this with clipped, you’d hit one golf shot. Take a look at the yardage, come back to it. Obviously, I’m going to manipulate my clip numbers a little bit because I might hit two, but we’ll see. First up out the gate on my wedge random ladder is a 55 yard shot. I think to make this harder or easier queue, you can call it. Should I start with the mil grind five or should I start with the mil grind four? Five. Mill grind five is going straight out the gate. That could be tricky for the mil grind five. So, what’s a 55 yard shot? I would say 55 yards. You know what I’m going to do to make this genuine? I’m going to check my wedge ladder specs in here. So, I’ve been trying to get less reliant on this, but it’s a grid that I’ve been using to bring some feel into it. You might have seen the Dave Pelt stuff, the Phil Mickelson stuff. Dave Peltz, bless him rest his soul, recently passed away. But this is how he used to work his wedge yardages. So, I’ve got the 60 and it would say a 9:00 feel. So obviously I don’t have a flag out there for 55. But if I get the 9:00 feel in the back swing and then go through with a decent bit of pace and say that’s going to be long for sure. Jumped on it. Silly amounts of zip on that. It’s way long. It’s gone to Well, actually the length isn’t too bad. And the number we want to actually look at, believe it or not, is the spin. So the yardage wasn’t too bad, but the spin is 10,256. That’s a mountain of spin. So albeit wedge was a little long. It went about 65, which is long at 55. Now I’ve got the mil grind four. Let’s just see if I can get a little closer to my yardage. But 10,000 spins a lot on that golf shot. That was hit real good. Similar line, similar distance, zipped for fun again. Very similar. It’s gone 66 yards, 9,677 spin. So, I actually thought those two figures would be close. In terms of going back to our clip test, we’re going to mark us in a little long on that. So, I’ll put in the 60 yards. Difference of five. Missed the target. That’s awarded me on the wedge. Now, it wants the 60. So, we should be able to get closer. We’ll start with the mil grind five which spun I think we’re up 600 revs more out the gate. I didn’t actually think it would be that high. So that’s news to me too. So again let’s just feel one 60 yards. Pretty good. I’m going to say landed on top of the other balls. Spinning zipping 69. So gone a bit further. Let’s take a look at the spin. I’m getting a little aggressive on the speed here. 10,300. That thing just munches. Mil grind four coming in. I don’t think this can keep up on the spin. 60. Here we go. Ease off on the speed. Not caught as good. Not struck as good. Landed in the same area. Wasn’t struck as good. Maybe an unfair one, but 9,600. Went 64. So closer on the yardage perhaps cuz I’m used to it. Didn’t quite catch it clean. I think my clip data I’m going to mark myself at 64. We’ll try for the help here. Still went down as a missed target. So it shows you how good you’ve got to be with that. 65 comes up less. Again, we’re low on the spin. Let’s stick with the 60s. 60° 65. I mean, that’s got to be good. Dirt in the eye. Hit the down bank. 65.7. We’re getting the feel now. Qondo, that was good. So, mil grind five. Can’t see. Perfect. Spin 8,800. It’s saying. I thought I caught that one pretty good. This might be the first one we get where the spin drops. Mill grind four up next. 65 again. We got a 65.7. Look how much higher that came out. It wasn’t hit that bad. Landed almost identical. 62. So, I’m going to give myself a 66. We’ll score it on the clip thing with the Mil Grime 5. Let’s take a look at the spin rate. We had 8,800 to go against on the shot before. That one came out with hardly any spin. Came out high in the blade. It’s only at 7,000 spin, so not as high. Okay, so back to clipped. What does it gives us? Gives us 70. I’m going to take another look now. I feel like we might be jumping up into a different wedge yardage. So 70 goes to 1030 back swing. You could see when I started out on this, I haven’t been practicing it. I mean, I think we did some content the other day or creating something, Mickelson would want to hit 1,500 of these yardage like control ladder wedge stuff a week. I’m hitting about 1,500 a year. Okay. So, we got to work on that. Okay. 1030 70 y in this breeze. That’s going to be short. Might be good actually. 70.2. Don’t doubt yourself. Me old China. 70.2. Full swing. 7,400 spin. Seems a little low. That was mil grind five. Let’s go for four. 70. So, we got 70 on the number again. And I’m getting two bites of every cherry, which we love. It’s going to be 72, maybe four. 72. Well done. 7270. I’m giving myself the 70 on the money. What’s the spin rate? You see how this test works? 8,200. So, I think we’re even on the two spins on that. So, it was the short yardages where the 60 was really winning out on the mil grind five. Last couple of yardages have been close. Brand new versus brand new. Let’s get into the next distance. 75. Going to have to hit this one a bit harder. I did notice that the mil grind four just crept up the blade and give me that high domey flight. Don’t love that. That always shows you a wedge isn’t grabbing. This looks great behind the ball as well in the five. The four was giving me the domy flight. All right. 75. I’m going to say pretty good. 74 72. Thought that would have been pretty good. Getting disappointed now when I’m off by three yards. Full swing spin 8,200. Pretty consistent. That was mill grind. Five. Four. Definitely getting theam advantage here. See how it’s just going up? That’s interesting. And that maybe wasn’t hit as good. You can see the lines off. Yeah, that’s gone far. That’s gone real far. So, what I say 72 is going in here for us here. And then that’ll be bad. I got distracted if I’m being honest. Say 8,300. Exactly the same. So, they were almost identical. Let’s see what our wedge ladder gives us on the next one. 80 yards. Shot number six. To be honest with you, I might have to switch to a 56 here. We can hit a full one of these. Let’s have a look. Mil grind five. Full 60 into breeze. Never hit full 60 if I can avoid it. Gone about 70 73 into breeze. Remember this test takes the breeze. Spin rate 7,000 mil grind four full shot. coming out higher for sure. It’s gone further. 6,900. So, more spin on the Mill Grind 5. I mean, the Mil Grind 5 is consistently showing a bit more spin distance-wise. 75. So, that got closer. Still missed the target. 85. I’m going to have to change clubs. Let’s get into some fresh tape off the 56. Interesting to see the big difference in the spin, though. Again, if you’ve got a launch monitor, this is where it’s brilliant to figure out your yardages. So 85 would be 1030 on a 56 is 90. So let’s just take a bit off that much more rounded leading edge. 83.7. You filthy swordsman. We’ll take that. Sadly, I don’t have a fresh 56 in the mill grind four. This is my mill grind 4. So, 1030 with that 56 11,428 spin rate. Get on this now. So, we’re now going to go 85 y. Wasn’t necessarily aiming for that flag. Distance is 83. Love it. So, they’ve gone bang on. So, we had 11,000 something on the spin compared to 11,000 on the spin. So, very similar on that full shot. Almost identical numbers, which is interesting, right? Good hit. Now, we’re up to 90 in this breeze. It’s going to be a good dig. And that’s the great thing about this test. You get to do it in exactly the conditions you’re faced with. 90 yards. Now it’s got to go a hair further. Trying to give it all of these ones. That is good. I actually practice a lot more with the 56 on full shots than I do the 60. That was MG5. That spin rate came up at 11,800 and it was 92 91. It’s going to be pretty good, too. Yeah. Good. 879,600. I mean, that’s a huge difference in spin there between the two. Huge difference. And we had a 91 on the shot before as well. And then 95 is your last one. So for me, from this yardage, that’s going to be a full flat out 56 in this breeze. Hard to jump on it. Go. Yeah, pretty good. 92 spin rate 10,300. And then if I grab the 56 of the mil grind force. 10,300’s a lot. New way, new grooves. I think we’ll reveal quite a bit here if I can hit it pure. I’m hitting this pretty much full out. And that was steep. That’ll have a lot of spin on it. Zipping back. Look, deeper divot 11,000. So, yeah, 92 versus 90 was the total on this. So if you go into your clip data, difficult for me to get back there on that flag, finish and save that then gives you a number on your clip data which will go into your activity feed. But I think the bottom line that we’re seeing there, yes, the look is quite different and we were able to get a brand new one versus a brand new one. Spin rate I the one I didn’t like was the one that would launch high. I’ve said it to you before about wedges. When you’re playing these offspe shots, what you want to look for, you don’t want it to be like dumpy up high and curving. You want to try and get them that they shoot out with a bit of spin. Anytime you get to the high 9,000s on a shot that isn’t hit full is fantastic. So, if you’re looking in here now, so we’ve got the full swing data on the spin rates, which is good. Obviously, it’s giving you the yardage. Then you can see your score on the wedge lad of 50 to 100 is six out of nine. It gives you your average proximity to the hole, which was 10.1. I had everything going at the black flag. So, you can see we’ve got a grouping here where the green comes this way, uh, curves to us, curves away from us. Then I’ve got a flag there where I actually hit some pretty decent shots to be fair. So, it’s registered that. It’s giving me 109 shot quality. To give you an idea, to average is 100. And it’s saying here as I break it down that 50 to 75, I was 116. And then 75 to 100 I was running my that brought my average down cuz I wasn’t quite as high. Um but it gives me an overall of 109 which is pretty good when it comes to capturing your data. So you have a benchmark at which you can practice against but also you’re able to compare the two wedges. Now I did give myself two goes at everything. So there was 18 shots there. Maybe not quite as many whatever we went through but you saw I was doubling up at every target. But imagine how good you could get if you’ve got a brand new wedge that’s giving you the spin. Keep an eye on when it’s time to change. I was reluctant as to when I was going to change these, but I think I’m going to put them in now. You just can see I’m 2,000 revs off on certain shots. Yes, technique comes into play. Last shot was steeper than the one previous. You have to measure that. But as I was hitting these low range ones, just a lot more munch on the spin rate number. So, you got to keep an eye on as a golfer when it’s time to change, but also having that rounded leading edge, knowing that there’s new tech in the groove there, knowing these are raw. Obviously, they’ve got the Troty Golf stamp on there that seals it for me, but it’s just a beautiful looking wedge. The other key thing I’ve done here, I’ve gone 610 wedge shafts and I’ve staggered the weight through them. Really like this KBS 610 wedge shaft. It’s um taking spin off for me. I spin them a lot, so I like to have something that doesn’t quite give me too much spin. But that would be how I’d look at it. The comparison is is that if your old wedges are starting to show signs of getting that dumpy flight, time to change. But even when I ripped the cover off a brand new 60 mil grind 4 and compared it to the mil grind 5, you could see we were seeing quite a bit more spin across the board. That’s me. Do your test yourself. Obviously, take a look at the wedges side by side and you’re going to get a slightly different look around the greens. But you know what? A new look is always good. It’s always fresh. Taylor may have nailed it with these things. Tommy Fleetwood’s got them in play already among others. But I think the new tech, the groove shape, everything else is going to be eye opening when you do your test on mil grind 4 versus mil grind 5. [Music]

Are they gonna make a new full face wedge?
trottie dont look at the first comments. Im here for the golf i promise
Hi Trottie! I really enjoy the videos and the honest, in-depth reviews you provide—great work! As everyday golfers who don’t get fresh wedges every few weeks like the pros, I think it would be incredibly helpful to see how wedges perform after 3–4 months of regular use (have you gone to a Muni lately and poked your head in one of those bags? The wedges are 2 generations back!). Seeing how much spin performance declines over time would give us a more realistic expectation of durability.
Additionally, it would be great to see more testing under real-world conditions, like with wet golf balls or grass—situations we often deal with on the course. Spin numbers and performance data from wet or damp conditions would really round out the reviews and make them even more practical for the average golfer.
Thanks again for the awesome content. Keep it coming!
Just started the video but regardless of what it says but no regrets grabbing MG5 up from MG4 for my 56 & 60
I have HB in both MG4 but switching to SC on the 60 for more versatility, never take a full swing with my 60 to feel like I need the HB for my steep swing
56 got the satin head with matching X shafts to my P770 6-AW
& 60 went charcoal head with black true temper S400 shaft for an awesome stealth look
love the mg4s.. I'm a straight up SB preference so all those alphabets of grinds are lost on me, really. Forged is interesting…main US market hasn't done much with that…Vokeys, RTX, MGs all soft but cast. Japanese models were often forged..had a Cleveland Forged RTX from japan, was great.
Is there any way you could compare the sm10s to the mg5?
Was the clubface cleaned between shots? Could be why spin is going down
MIZUNO T3
Should I upgrade my mg2s to these?
just for some advice for yourself/editor(s) you should include a side by side numbers comparison same way u were using launch monitor data as a side by side. Think this would be more simplistic for all viewers looking to upgrade or just transitioning over to a new brand. Well done regardless 🙃
Heh "filthy swordsman" 😅
