Growing up on the green with Kai Trump

My name is Kai Trump. Um, started playing golf when I was 2 years old. Um, my mom actually got it got me into it. So, she doesn’t play golf. That’s the funny thing. So, she actually she plays tennis, but um, when I was younger, she I used to play tennis as well. I started at 2 years old and she used to roll like golf balls to me and I just like putt them and whatnot on the green um, in Westchester. But, um, she like now she watches almost like every other tournament or every tournament because I have four siblings. So, it’s really hard for her to like be here and watch me all the time, but when she can, she always tries to come. Um, grew up playing golf and tennis. And then I I only really play during like the weekends during um the summers cuz I lived in New York City pretty much my whole life. Um, and then moved to Florida 4 years ago because I did want to play college golf. And ever since then, I’ve been playing almost every other day, every day. I would say a lot of the pros obviously like looking up to them and like watching them. obviously Tiger, um Rory, like watching those guys and especially at such a young age now I get to know them. It’s has been really cool and that’s obviously kind of influenced me. But also I would say like my mom like I wouldn’t be playing golf without her. I always wanted to play college golf even like growing up. Um I would say probably like 9 years old that’s when I really wanted to play college golf. I didn’t know where yet but I just knew I wanted to go D1 somewhere. Um, and then once I’m into Florida, I’m like, “All right, now I actually have like the resources and I had the time to do it and um, I just took advantage of it.” And I mean, here I am now. I committed to Miami. So, it was it was it was a nice process. I I was honestly I was really looking for good academics and also a city because I’m a city girl at heart, born and raised in New York City. I wasn’t really set on any Florida school. I was kind of just seeing like city coaches was really honestly that was like the most important like who’s the coach, what kind of players do they recruit? Like who do like who am I going to be around 24/7 when I go there and that was really big. But um Miami just ended up honestly having the best coaches ever. The school is amazing. One c my one of my cousins actually graduated from there and then another one’s going there now. So, I was like, you know, I have family there and it’s not too far away from home because I am a mama’s girl and I can’t wait. Like, I’m going to visit her every single weekend probably. So, that was like a huge like um it was a huge factor in like my process. [Music] I mean, honestly, even though I didn’t haven’t played well, it’s been amazing. Like, it’s really cool, especially like seeing the holes that like Bryson drove the green on, stuff like that. Like, it’s really cool to like actually play an event here and not just like play, but now that I’m playing a tournament here, it’s actually really cool. So, I’ve enjoyed it a lot and it’s a it’s an awesome course. Tough, but awesome. It honestly it hasn’t really changed like my goals or anything like that. Like I still have like the same goals in line. I just had like kind of added a different aspect to like I guess like my life in general, I guess. But um I mean I still am going to continue doing what I do. Obviously when I go to college, golf comes first and I am committed for golf. So that’s obviously my priority. But I’m going to just keep on doing my social media stuff and kind of just keep everything going the way I’m going right now. I wanted to play because I’m I always like challenging myself and honestly like I’ve been playing very well. So I’m like, you know what, maybe let’s just go like keep on going. Let’s just play the event. And I think this was a huge learning experience because sometimes, you know, when you’re not ready for something, maybe don’t try to push those limits. But um this honestly I’ve learned a lot from this event and I I’ve learned a lot about like myself and what I need to work on, what things actually have gotten a lot better um and just kind of what I need to focus on like moving forward. But this obviously was a huge like kind of stepping stone in like my career because this is my first AJ. So that’s kind of cool and I didn’t want to like miss out on that because of um I was sick a few days ago. But um I mean I think I’m just going to learn a lot from this and honestly just like moving forward kind of work on a few things with my my game and whatnot. But I feel like I’m in a pretty good spot and this course definitely challenged me when I got the opportunity to play here. Like even if I was sick that wasn’t going to like stop me from playing. Um just because I mean obviously this event is amazing. Actually one of my like really good guy friends Pavo won this last year. So, like being able to like play the same course. Obviously, he’s not playing this year, but um I mean I think it just motivated me like, “Hey, like you got this. Like your friend won here. Like you’re going to go out there and you’re going to like just go and kill it.” Obviously, that didn’t really happen, but um I I mean I I don’t know. I was just like motivated to play because obviously I love playing in tournaments. I love playing in um in I I just like doing like competitive things. So like this just definitely challenged myself and it wasn’t like I I just felt like this this tour was kind of like a challenge to my like to myself and seeing like how I can perform especially like under pressure not feeling great and whatnot. But um no I’m glad I did it. I had a great time. You guys were amazing as well. So thank you. [Music]
