A few weeks ago at LIV Golf UK, Matt Gamble — the one-armed golf legend — faced off against Ripper GC’s Lucas Herbert in a one-hole challenge. This comes as a rematch after the pairing played The Old Course at St. Andrews a while ago. To keep it all square, Lucas had to play with one arm as well just to keep it interesting. What started as a practice round turned into a fun little showdown filled with laughs and some pretty impressive shots.

Uh, I’ve got seven on. I’m playing for not a very good strike. Well, I’ve got seven on. I’m playing for a decent strike. Back to a six. Then, right, Lucas, the last time we played, you beat me by 27 shots around the old course. Today, I’m going to take away an arm and you have to play it one-handed with me. I like your chance to beat me by 27 shots today if I’m if I’m going to come back to one arm golf. Fairly. I don’t know. I don’t know. I’ve seen you all the age. It was all right. It was all right. If you can get me inside 50, I can probably pitch it. Okay. But we’ve got we’ve got water short. We’ve got You’ve done me a fair done me a rock solid here. 170 yard par three. We could have gone a par five and I would have been in a lot of trouble. I think this might be my only hope. Really? Okay. Par three. How many shots How many shots do you reckon you do here? If I can make four here, I’d be really happy. I’d be impressed. Yeah. If I make four, I’ll be quite happy. Oh my god. That’s good. That’s really good. Good. Get up there. It’s a bit of a crappy strike. Sit. Sit. Oh, that’s a good shot. I was just looking. So, you don’t use a glove? No. I mean, it’s got to be hard. It’s got to be hard to get on and off, but Yeah. Yeah. You don’t need to. You don’t need to. Gloves. Gloves are a joke. Why do you need a glove to play golf? Tell me that now. I’m not from England. I play in places where it’s hot and it sweats sometimes. Okay, I’ll give you that one. I’ll give you that one. That’s fair enough. It’s very high. Yeah. Well, if it hits you in the face, I do it. funnily, I’ve not done this a lot, so I’m I’m just going with some gut instincts here. That’s what you’ve been practicing all week. No, not doing this one armed anyway. Oh, that’s where’s that for? Just short, I think. Got another ball. Yeah, I need a real visional. Don’t know why I’m doing this whole pre-shot routine. It’s not going to change anything, is it? Well, I’ve got the top covered. You had You had it good on the range. Got the top covered. What am I doing wrong here? Reload again. What am I doing wrong here, coach? Um, well, you’re hitting the top of the ball rather than the bottom of it to start with. I strengthen your grip. Well, I’ve got I tried to go very strong. Strong and then aim right. Aim right. Okay. A bit. And then I’m going to move ball position back a little bit. Swing smooth. Whatever I’ve been doing hasn’t worked. I think I think you put the the fear of God in me when you said don’t go under it. [Music] Well, they’re in a bucket just here. They uh I’m very I would say I’m very consistent. Yeah. Yeah. No, it’s just very I don’t know. Do you need this teed up this high? Is this giving you the wrong thoughts? Well, if I te it up any lower, I’ll miss it at this rate. I think I’ve been I’ve been trying to get it in the air. So, I’m going to try Oh, yeah. Don’t lean back. Yeah. I’m going to have to have to make an adjustment there. Oh, it’s it’s really close. Well, I don’t know what we’re going to do cuz can’t play it from there. Yeah, I’m I’m I’m hitting nine off the T at this point, right? I’ll go and see if I can dig one of those out. Yeah. God, might be a long hole for me. Actually, I’ll get line of sight on this uh on this sign. I’ll be able to drop in the walkway. Perfect. Easy. There you go. I found it. Which one’s that one? Oh, doesn’t matter. Well, on the video, it’ll be my first one. Oh, yeah. You have dodgy rules, don’t you, on these tours. Yeah. If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying. Happy with here, mate. Uh, yeah. Got no choice. Tea. Tee it up if you want. Te it up if you want. It didn’t help me on the tea. We’ll draw around the tree. Oh, look at that. Better. Get up there. Told you. Smooth, isn’t it? Yeah. I mean, I have no idea what you were doing wrong back up there, but whatever you were doing, you need to stop doing that. So, we played together last year at St. Andrews. Yeah. And you told me you had an accident when you were younger where you lost Yes. I lo the elbow down. Yeah. When did you get into golf? Um, so I lost my arm when I was three. Yep. Uh, in a in a tractor lawn mower accident. It’s nice and ironic that we’re here at JCB doing this. I didn’t actually sponsor plug. I I started playing golf about what is it? uh 10 years ago now, about 2014, 2015. Um and it was just with my granddad just playing like hitting some golf balls on a short hole and then he just basically just kept going. All right. Oh, out of the rough with one hand. So, this is this is where I think I got all right. That’s not too bad. If you’re trying to hit something full, that’s when the club will turn over and you got to hold on pretty tight. But I think you’ll be all right here. It’s very good. Oh no. Sit down. Sit. I’ll take that. That’s pretty good. I’ll take that. That’ll keep you honest with that bunker shot. Yeah, I know. Is it not in the bunker? Oh, we’re fine. No. Club did you go with there? Lob wedge. Lob wedge. Got a What else have you got there? Got a sand wedge. Yeah, I got a 54 there. Yeah, take that. What do you reckon that’s better? Yeah, I just think the lob wedge can just dig a little bit in the rough. Especially that was pretty thick lie. Where are you bald? Uh down the front. I know. Yeah. A lie that sort of sits down a little bit like that. Well, cuz the So, yeah. So, you want to I would go I would open it up. Open the face up. So, you’ve got you’ve still got your loft of like 60°, but now cuz of that bottom edge, you’ll have you’ll have a lot more like it’ll help you get through the grass a lot. So you won’t have to you won’t have to feel like like try and try and feel like it kind of shallows out a bit that way rather than digging that way. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So try try and feel like you want like that feeling there. You almost want to be looking directly at the face rather than any sort of shaft lean that way. See how that feels. So I would play a little further forward in your stance and to keep that club face nice and open. Really? Yeah. Yeah. It’s come out nice, isn’t it? A little better. Those I’d say rough shot. Well, I mean, this is chipping, but no matter rough, that is the hardest thing hand from like from like 100 to 150 yards. Yeah. When you’re trying to like go at something. Yeah. Well, it’s actually it’s funny like I feel a little bit more comfortable hitting around the greens cuz a lot of a lot of what we did early days like as a junior, we would do a lot of one one hand pitching stuff, especially with the left hand cuz that sort of controls the face so much. So, I feel feel like I’ve got a little bit at least at least a little bit of background around the green, but take me back to the tea and I’m in a lot of trouble. What? Go. All right. Knock it in. Right. Now there’s ladybirds in my way. Go away. I’m not having any excuses. Little quicker than that. Scared. What were you scared of? I don’t know. I don’t have no idea how fast they are. I’ve not hit a putt in like four four weeks or something. That’s right. My routine feels weird. I always walk in with a putter in the right hand. Oh no, it’s mental. I need to actually hold it. How have you done that? All right, pressure’s on. I can’t believe you’ve done that. Not a tough part. Shouldn’t be. Don’t make it harder than it needs to be. Yeah. Well done, mate. Good for it, was awesome to catch up again. Yes. Thank you. Um, thanks so much for doing that. No, no worries. It’s uh it was good to see you hit it again. It’s always like I was telling Dom before to watch you on the range cuz Yeah, that I mean that six on you hit seven on you hit in here and like there’s there’s honestly there’s people that will watch this video at home that wish they could hit it as good as that with two ants. So, it’s awesome. I’m so glad that something shitty happened earlier in life and you made a very good fist of one fist of what’s happening in the world. Oh yeah. There’s a lot of people like that, you know. There’s a lot of people I play with like that and they have something shitty happen to them. Um and some people rebound better, some people rebound worse, but I mean everyone has to try and do something, don’t they? So part of it Exactly. Thanks for having me on for the video. Wherever it goes on the socials, it’s going on. I don’t know where it’s going, but it’s going somewhere. It’s going somewhere. We’ll work that one out. Cheers, guys. Cheers.
