all righty for those of you that don’t know uh we were fortunate enough to get Bill Murray on my brother and I’s podcast New Heights R Charles that night came on not only did he memorize all his lines I I don’t want to say rake Charles was not using Q cards say that and the other thing that was we were really fortunate to do is be able to get play around with Bill Murray which I don’t know what has gone in my life to be able to play golf with Bill Murray major bucket list item I didn’t really know how to interact like I think when you meet somebody that you idolize your whole life and you look up to a lot of times it ends up being like you know you’re at the dance and you’re trying to talk to the hottest girl and you don’t really know what to say you don’t want to look stupid so you end up looking stupid I think that’s kind of how it went but anyways the golf was great we played a match round at a hoopy match Club it’s only match play which by the way the course was fantastic thank you so much for allowing me down there cuz that was a place that I did not belong one bit um this is like I mean it was one of the nicest places I’ve ever been in Vidalia Georgia bill and I played a match game which you know I don’t know I truly don’t know if anybody was keeping score I know I I was too rattled to even know what was happening and you’re going to see you know I think some really cool stuff one of the things I really enjoyed about the round is I don’t know man I just think Bill Murray is such an iconic person and in a lot of ways every interaction it felt like he had out there was so unique to him so authentic he goes out of his way you can tell to bring people Joy but doing it in a way that doesn’t feel like it’s overstated that’s something that I’ve always identified with and I think that that’s one of the things that makes him special it was a special game it was a fun game and I think you guys will enjoy this while we’re still speaking Clon Georgia yeah yeah it’s awfully the white Claw is definitely The Grandin alcohol yeah you ever drink any oh yeah me too I too it’s when things got really hard we going drink moonshine of course you must try moonshine too yes yes I found that to be incredibly efficient what’s your favorite uh moonshine flavor you know I had one of these jars that I kept for like 20 years and I opened it with my French friend who went this is unbelievable they would served this in Bordeaux and called this the gonit West it really it had cherries in it it tasted amazing it was so smooth it wasn’t like moonshine at all so if you can keep it with you know with fruit in it man it can be really great it Seasons but no one has the no one has the patience cut where’s my cut man cut cut cut sit nice Ball come on there’s a bug on my ball I used to hit him I used to always hit him thinking they’re going to love the ride not so much I never hit a good shot with a bug on I stopped doing it my handicap got better my game got better scor it’s not much of a story but it’s true it’s a really good shot stop stop stop stop was very good chance got a chance in oh a good try that was kind of exciting I thought you had it yeah think I’m going to give this a try Bill what’s that yeah watch out there’s like a rope on it like a cheese thing on the side of it inside inside the Clon bar dude this thing’s great Bill like one of those holidays it is When Bill Murray invites you to play golf in Vidalia, Georgia (yes, where the onions come from), you don’t ask questions – you just go. I mean, we’re talking about Big Ern McCrackin and Carl Spackler here. And the thing is – we AREN’T talking about Bushwood Country Club either – we played Ohoopee Match Club, which was recently rated the 34th Greatest Golf Course in America.
This place is a golfers dream, built purely for match play. Speaking of matches, Bill and I played one… although I’m still not quite sure who actually won. Between him telling stories from my favorite movies growing up and giving me his take on everything from putting styles to proper hat selection, I was too entertained to keep score. That’s the beauty of match play though – it’s more about the moments than the final score. And this course was built for exactly that kind of golf. No stroke play, no scorecards, just you against your opponent, hole by hole.
Fun fact: The course sits right in Georgia’s onion country, and while most people know Vidalia for its sweet onions, the golf out here is pretty sweet too. The Ohoopee River runs through the property, and every hole feels like it was designed specifically for match play – risk vs reward, and lots of decisions to make.
Big thanks to Bill Murray (still can’t believe I get to say that) and everyone at Ohoopee for an unforgettable round. And yes, we did hit a few shots that would make Carl Spackler proud (though we’re both still working on total consciousness).
