After spending countless hours with the world’s best players, the research and development team at TaylorMade understood that a wedge can never be soft enough in their hands. That’s why, for the first time ever, MG5 wedges are fully forged from soft carbon steel. Not only does the forging process give golfers a soft feel around the green where they need it most, but it also ensures the wedge’s consistency from top to bottom.
The process begins with a soft carbon steel billet being heated and bent into an L shape. The piece then goes through a rough forging process where excess material is removed, and the wedge begins to take shape. Next comes precision forging, where the aesthetic appearance and grinding begin to take shape. From there, the grinding, face, grooves, and hosel are machined to ensure consistency and that each wedge is exactly as designed. The final steps consist of a series of aesthetic details.
« Inspired by comments from Collin morikawa, we set out to create the best wedge TaylorMade has ever designed. Top players will tell you that having great feel around the greens is essential to confidence in your short game… and to get the best feel possible, the wedge must be forged. »
Matt Bovee, Director of Product Creation – Irons and Wedges
The MG5 wedges are the first in the MG line to use aggressive sawn grooves. The sawing process allows TaylorMade designers to get even closer to the legal limits of groove geometry. Redesigned with ultra-tight tolerances, steeper walls, and deeper radii, these grooves allow the MG5 to produce more spin than previous MG generations.
Like previous MG generations, MG5 wedges utilize a RAW face finish and all-new Continuous Spin Tread Technology to help golfers maintain spin and control in wet conditions. The Continuous Spin Tread grooves act like all-season tires on a road, redirecting water away from the face and increasing friction at impact. With Spin Tread Technology working in concert with the sawn grooves, the MG5 retains 13% more spin than the MG4 in wet conditions. These technologies also help maintain a more consistent launch angle between wet and dry conditions.
The MG5 wedges offer six different grind types inspired by the professional tour, designed by Greg Cesario, a master craftsman at TaylorMade, to offer golfers a wide range of options to suit their game. Three of these grinds match TaylorMade’s standard bounce profile, preferred by the majority of golfers: the SB, SC and SX grinds.
The SB grind features a full sole with consistent relief on the back edge for smooth, consistent turf interaction compatible with most swing types. The mild, four-way camber of this grind offers greater versatility for golfers who like to manipulate the face. Additionally, the increased sole width provides additional forgiveness, especially for golfers with a steeper swing. Most golfers will find this wedge beneficial in virtually any turf condition.
The SC grind is TaylorMade’s signature mid-bounce grind and has quickly become the preferred grind among club professionals. The mid-low bounce design with added camber in the mid-sole also features distinct relief in the heel, toe, and back edge. The result is a grind designed for ultimate versatility on the green in all turf conditions for players who like to manipulate the face, while providing consistent stability on full shots.
A new addition to the MG lineup, the SX grind features a wider sole and increased curvature to deliver consistent turf interaction and optimal performance out of the bunker. The inverted C-shaped back edge provides relief that maintains a consistent bounce as golfers manipulate the face. This model is ideal for golfers seeking the ultimate balance of stability and versatility.
“For the first time in my career, the MG5 wedge line represents the closest thing to the perfect combination of grinds, shapes, feel, and spin in a single product that I have seen in over 45 years.” »
Greg Cesario, Master Craftsman at TaylorMade
In addition to the three standard bounce options, the MG5 range also includes three additional grinds for golfers looking for specialized performance.
The HB grind is designed for golfers with a steeper swing or playing in soft conditions. Its high bounce provides stability and forgiveness. At the same time, the unique heel relief and tapered back edge provide great versatility and allow the wedge to quickly exit the turf without digging in.
The LB grind features minimal bounce and allows the leading edge to stay close to the ground. The modified C-grind accentuates this orientation at address, especially when the face is in the open position. The pronounced beveled leading edge and additional camber prevent the leading edge from digging in. This grind is perfect for golfers with a shallow swing and those playing in difficult, firm conditions.
The TW grind has been updated to reflect Tiger’s latest wedge requirements. This grind features additional camber and a new leading edge blend in the sole for a more efficient bounce and reduced heel relief in the 60° compared to the original TW grind.
« Throughout my career, I’ve been a versatile player, which is reflected in my wedge setup. Over the years, I’ve specifically perfected grind profiles that allow me to execute all the shots I need in all conditions. The MG5 TW grind allows me to do just that. »
