The Chicago Cubs took down the Atlanta Braves, 4-3 at Wrigley to kick off their series.
The Cubs won in extras on a Nico Hoerner high-chopper to take game one of the series against the Braves. Javier Assad and Charlie Morton kept the offenses at bay in short starts, but the Cubs bullpen was up to the task against a tough Atlanta offense.
Join Luke, Cody, Brendan, and Corey on the CHGO Cubs Postgame Podcast as they breakdown tonight’s game and look ahead to what’s next for the Cubbies.

n [Music] hey Chicago what do you say it’s the chgo Cubs postgame Show podcast the Cubs walk it off against the Braves in the first of that series Luke stuck Meer oh wait a minute Brendan Miller in the house the pitch doctor all the way from California first class playing dride all the way here Ritz Carlton tonight he was here for the big watch along credit to All City Freedman and of course Mr Cody delmendo Joey running the ones and twos and I guess we can mention Ryan will join Ryan will join Ryan will join from the press to but but Brendan’s the story let’s be honest how does it feel sitting next to me you’ve heard me for nine straight years and here I am next to you it’s honestly a little weird it’s it’s nice but it well we’ve been we’ve been just talking to each other via computer for 9 years so it’s it’s weird this is 4 hours seems a little am I as weird in person as you thought uh no okay good look at that I appreciate that shout out to everyone who watched during the watchong and is is also here watching live now yeah uh that’s a lot of content to take in of course you know Luke tweeted we’re the number one Cubs podcast in the world so look at that Luke said that not me you heard it here look is what it is it is what it is is what it is so we again I appreciate you all for hanging out with us tonight it was a great game hang out with us for the sickos are the reason we’re here yeah well we’re we’re allos that’s right look at us we’re on these seats right now well you’re on your fifth blue movie I am it’s he’s a great advertisement for it’s 10:15 p.m. we watching Cubs baseball in May talking about it we’re the real Su credit to us what is wrong with us it was a lot wrong and we had a miniature therapy session trying to figure that out during the game Carri wants M go for a Slaughter so Cody for those of you that have never seen the live YouTube show or listen to the podcast after a win Cody will do the Blue Moon beer bat chug uh quality chug is 10.25 or less yes uh as to which he’s had many of those this season uh Brendan was going to do it but now that he’s on five or six blue moons he decided it’s not going to happen tonight Cubs win four to3 in 10 Innings the walk-off Chopper against the Atlanta Braves 4-3 game one in RBI that’s his second walk-off winner of his career Nico horer to me Nico to me the game was not about Nico it was not about Javier Assad the ass man it was about the bullpen dare I say it they were spectacular incredible spectacular five and a third scoreless I think it was one hit sixks no walks no walks no walks shout out that’s five different guys oh shout out to Luke little in that 10 oh man like that was I mean it’s already hard enough whenever you go out there into extras now with the the ghost Runner and he gets the big first out then he gets the ground ball to Dansby Dansby helps him by making an incredible defensive play yeah uh throwing to Third Base because Marcel Ozuna is not only a terrible person but a but also an idiot um and then the I don’t remember how they got the third out but um yeah it was just a big inning he’s a young pitch ground to wisdom grounder to wisdom thank you it’s like it’s a big moment for a rookie pitcher and we’ve seen him have control problems and all that he goes out there against one of what’s supposed to be one of the best lineups in baseball and just somehow got out of he was pumped up coming off the field like I was ready to run through this brick wall over here I was ready to slide into his dad’s DMS and tell him that’s your son man I met him at spring training that’s the only reason I would do that great guy shout out to you but yeah he it was like obviously there was a lot more than just luk little but the I said before the the bottom of the 10th inning happened after they got out of he’s like the Cubs have to win it here they have to win it here if you you hold the Braves to no runs and Extra Innings one time you have to take advantage here and they and they did and so a lot of credit goes to Luke little on get getting that shutdown inning well I want to point out in particular agreed with all that on Luke little I want to point out in particular Hector nerys that is three straight outings for him uh without walking a batter two straight outings with no hits uh that’s really what you want to see we were talking about it while we were watching the game obviously the command has not been good his you know the difference between his like ra and his FIP has not been good to start this season they call him what is it heart attack Hector heart attack heart attack Hector uh but as we talked about when they signed him one of the most frequent appearing relievers in the last several years doing it for a team with World Series aspirations every year in Houston so constantly pitching in high leverage big part of that Bullpen I don’t know that he’s going to get back to Peak form but if he can be like what we’ve seen these last few outings less of those walks better command he he was supposed to be someone that was going to be relied upon at the back end of this Bullpen he has but it’s been walking the tight RPP if he can lock in like we’ve seen these last few outings that would be huge for this bullpen in addition to like what we saw from Tyson Miller a guy I know that Brendan wants to talk about and and and also Ben Brown the other day too Ben Brown’s been good in the bullpen too Miller I mean Miller wesneski you named the guy they all they all stepped up tonight wesi the eth inan was kind of a sample of what could it what could the bullpen look like when everyone’s at full health you imagine a scenario where Wix comes back the rotation is fully healthy you can move wisneski to a Max effort roll like you saw tonight pumping 95 96 sweepers nerys gets healthy or rather back with his command Luke little looks as if he did tonight the volume of possibilities is quite High we haven’t seen it this year but the possibility always exists that’s why I’m so tuned in to that rotation good and healthy because you just pointed it out you have Ben brown maybe in that role you have Hayden weski moving to that role we’ll see what the rotation looks like and then you get rebound performance is from hex nerys and the rest of the bullpen and maybe Maryweather get healthy and by the way catch today who else in the bullpen we’ll talk about it later in the show Kyle Hendricks there we go how will that work out for the Cubs at least the next time at least the next time around we don’t ma e he’s going to come out pumping 95 with a full beard he’s your new closer full beard completely guy yeah he’s going to come out like Kenny Powers American flab anyways Cody Cody’s going to do a beer bat CH we’re getting ready uh for Cody who’s like I said he’s had one bad one this year that didn’t go well the problem was he took the beer bat and he tipped it up to get that final and it little Title Wave got him little Title Wave got and so we had beer kind of all over the place that was the one but since then he’s been on a tear he’s been on a pretty good tear and this is what most people get excited about in the chat we start getting some predictions here some people think 10.9 some people usually get a 10.69 usually shows up there’s evil wax with a 9.7 uh Shane thinks Cody looks a tad glassy eyed tonight uh by the way Super Chat stevenh says uh if it’s Vlad Jr is available do you make the trade oh this we’ll talk Cody this is flashing back to our you got to go watch our pot from late October last go back and watch it that’s right uh we’ll talk about in the next next couple of days but first ladies and gentlemen this is Cody’s Blue Moon beer bat chug well we got to dedicate wait or toast you need to wait sir because this happened here go quality chug okay wow Joey a production value Joey know it’s still still work in progress but wanted to break it out for tonight the first win of the new era and it will keep getting better but you know adding some bells and whistles to the Beer bat Chuck that’s very nice Joey why Joey’s one of the kind here in the bottom left very official now no more we’re not leaving not up to Stucky eyeballing it anymore no shake calls 979 and Elijah after that uh production value to the the beer bat chug is now calling for a seven oh boy seven and change all right dedication yeah sorry interrupt this isn’t just because Brendan is here but because I think we got a culmination of like what we’ve missed over the last 10 to 15 days or whatever and that was Danby Swanson’s incredible defensive play in the 10th inning to get Ozuna at third base that led to them getting the shutdown inning but also two hits tonight everyone’s been bitching about his offense all year I don’t know man like I I want to give it to him just because everyone’s just been complaining about the defense up the middle and complaining about his offense and also I guess because Brennan’s here thank you it’s deserved to me credit to you jordo thinks you can do this in three seconds I don’t know about that that’s a big people don’t realiz not like shotgun a beer the looks smaller on the screen the bat is at least 2 and 1/2 3 ft long yeah okay are we ready yeah Cody D CH got a thing up there Joey go counter starts when it hits his lips and ends when I say so there goes delmendo he’s already through the barrel of the bat he’s getting to the handle no Title Wave so far this is a fast one this is a fast one and done o two just that was for the bull just made the qualification for a quality CH was still a barrel though more than our friend uh but 1025 1025 the victory beer bat timer well you know niely we didn’t get to do a lot of beer BS last week so you know wow that was we missed one of those yeah we missed one of those back also I just want to say that I’m adding this game to the 2024 Chicago Cubs this team Banks folder because I just felt like that was a great team win like the walk-off was fun I mentioned Dansby the defense the bullpen but Assad wasn’t great but he still ate your Innings and you beat a team that you know you look at them on paper you look at them as far as expectations and they’re supposed to be better than you and you you wanton a hard earned game at home coming off losing two of or losing three or four to the Pirates you know like yeah on top of the fact that the Brewers won tonight so you don’t lose any ground in the division like this is this was a game that reminded me like just how good this team can be well this was a game that they they had to battle through the they hit the ball better I think throughout the night than the Braves if you’re into the expected stats like they deserved a little better of an outcome but you were down a few times came back scratched across that run to keep it tied then they went up 3-2 scratch across another get it tied again and just kept kind of kind of grinding it out clearly this offense is not firing on all cylinders but this is what you have to do when as we we always bring up that quote from jet about not blowing teams out you’re going to play a lot of close games you got to find ways to win them you got to find ways to get past if you have bad luck on a particular leaving or your starter goes short whatever it is and they did that tonight they they hung around this Atlanta team even if they’re not completely healthy or at their best it’s a very good baseball team and they hung with them and at least right now you got a series split with the Atlanta Braves and you’ll take that this team is really good and the Cubs have found a way to hang in these games and despite not being able to pour on the offense they figured it out and you mentioned it too it was just nice to have Nico and Dansby back in the lineup man we don’t have to talk about it last week was a disaster just nice to see them penil in there the ball hit up the middle you don’t have that that worry anymore you’re just like no yep these are outs they’re converted to outs don’t worry about it well you defin saw the value of the those guys man like Nico even had a really great defensive play in the middle of the game there on the I think he was on the Reaching Across second Bas yeah across second base on on running and making the throw the same like magical wasn’t making that at all this past week you know and he wasn’t you know a lot of people have been complaining about the offense and like their offensive production and all that and I you got to you got a glimpse or a good look at like what they bring on both sides of the baseball tonight you know Nico I know it was just a chopper up in the middle but put the ball in play when you just need to put the ball in play that’s what he’s he’s got great bath to ball skills too he had didn’t have a great night at the plate but how many times have we watched the Cubs kind of blow that kind of chance you know like I don’t care it doesn’t have to be pretty you put the ball in play when you need to put the ball in play and you either in good things are more likely going to happen more often than not so I he to me he gets a ton of credit in that situation and then I already talked about Dansby but you know his defense too in that that 10th inning again was like the decision to go to third base there it just like not a lot of players think have that automatic thought to just do that you know that was one trait that Willie Harris brought up when he was being interviewed by the score today is that he has that High baseball IQ where he makes plays that look simple look obvious but in reality it’s due to a very calibrated internal clock when Dansby and ni were out and we saw what the alternative is with magical and master bony you could see the value of a calibrated clock on display Master bony fumbled a few balls did not throw in time due to a clock that was not calibrated and then in addition to their defense you saw the ability of those two bass to make value you saw Dan tonight have two base hits Nico with the wall walkoff those are the exact plays that when you combine with their defense lead this middle infield Duo as one of the most valuable in the league of course you want to see more offensive production from Dansby similar with Nico on a consistent basis if you want to be greedy maybe more power but if they just provide slightly above League average offense put the ball in play have a few extra Bas his here or there with Gold Glove defense four to five wins for each player and unequivocally the best middle infield in the duo and it’s nice to have him back I don’t know what the over under number was but seven runs with the wind blowing out at Wrigley Field and Extra Innings that’s pretty surprising that it was as low scoring it was and again thanks to the bullpen thanks to some good defense from Dansby SE made a nice catch in right field they did some of the small things to win I think this was their 19th one run game of the year that’s that’s insane right now so too and we got a lot more to talk about by the way uh we got a Super Chat when we come back after this uh quick break for our our sponsors and we want to talk about all the moves before the game and all the things that are going on with the roster currently in uh at Wrigley Field but first Cody’s going to tell us about our friends at Circa oh Circa Circa Circa Circa love those guys all right uh there’s three reasons I love them you know they they always have the best odds uh they call them tight money line splits all right uh games strive to be minus 110 split on the circus Sports menu unlike other sports books which may use minus 115 or minus 120 they keep as little money as possible on large Market bets especially compared to other books they also don’t limit players based on their winnings every player has the same limits unlike other books who do limit winning players actually encourage betters to download and explore all sports betting apps available to compare the lines from each sports book uh and then finally their customer service is awesome they don’t have chat Bots like a lot of other Sports books do you just talk to real people via email usually um and they’re very very fast um and they resolve issues in a very timely manner uh something that chat Bots really don’t do they just waste your time so uh download the circus Sports Illinois app at Circas sports.com illino apppp to sign up today also be on the lookout for circa wife six or seven times what time I might be home uh she wants to know I’m just curious and this is for Ben if you are the Ben that was at Friday 120 club uh let us know because it was great to meet you thank you for coming out to our event and all that and being a huge supporter um I just remember you saying your name was Ben so shout out to Ben either way hey guys Mark lighter Jr provided the power for tonight’s game presented by Illinois pork producers Savor the flavor Savor the gains and celebrating any occasion by enjoying the best pork produced by Illinois Pig Farmers two on nobody out lighter comes in strikes out three straight Braves you want to talk about the bullpen like we did in the first segment to me that was the game yeah that was the game right there it wouldn’t have gone to that Extra Innings if it wasn’t for that effort from lighter a lot of guys did a great job in the bullpen even Assad for what not having his best stuff with wind blowing out I’m okay with what he did tonight nice to Win It none of it happens without lighter getting out of that any three big strikeouts I mean man every time I start thinking to myself how are they going to rely on this guy to get left like how can he keep doing it and he keeps doing it like he’s an absolute weapon in a bullpen so I’m looking at it now and I don’t I’m assuming this doesn’t include tonight so it’s even better but since 2022 as a reliever Mark ligher Jr at 2.9 RA in 119 games holding opponents to a 199 opposing batting average I we I mean Cody coined it it’s it’s lights out man that splitter is nasty when he has it working we know last year toward the end of the year obviously he got worn out didn’t have the feel for it wasn’t able to be as effective but the the dude that it you talked about it on the the live watch Brendon like at one point you know he was DFA but the decision to move him from a starter to reliever and give him that shot the Cubs have found themselves a high leverage reliever the goal for their front office is to find the possibilities where you get extreme outcomes lighter was DFA they did not Envision him to be this guy the stats you read surprises all of us that he’s been this valuable absent of that September stretch which I think at this point we can attribute to fatigue he’s been one of the better relievers in recent in Cubs history that long stretch of consistency with lighter it’s the volume of different pitch types whether it be splitter or sweeper or fast ball he has such a diverse pitch mix that allows him to adjust and the the trigger for him as his Bullpen value ended up being throwing more Splitters elevating the frequency of Splitters and when you have so many different pitch types from one pitcher for me I dial in on those guys those are the guys who represent some weirdness where if everything goes right then you get high extreme outcomes when I watch different players and different pitchers guys like lighter with that diversity are the ones that I’m most interested in um for me you know Cory kind of touched on it how he kind of was worn out at the end of last year I was looking at his game log he made 14 appearances in April and in May he’s only made five and you’re seeing when he gets the much needed rest how much of a guy can be you say that I didn’t even realize that I was just curious because like it’s like how long May 22nd already yeah like it I looked it up just because his last handful of outings he has looked more like what I feel like his best is and not only is it credit to him but also your starters are going deeper into games you’re you’re and also other relievers are stepping up too with Ben Brown and wesneski and um Tyson Miller has been good since he got here in multiple inning efforts too yeah Miller again almost went three Innings or went out three times right I still think he’s a guy you could possibly consider as your closer at some point Li possibly yeah yeah see that I I think he at least right now of course you know they’re not the same player but council’s kind of using him similarly to at times we saw the way that he would deploy Josh haer in the sense that he didn’t wait until it was the ninth inning if the game was on the line in the eighth inning Josh haer was getting up and coming in to keep it a one-run game or a two-run game whatever it might be it’s not an exact comparison but you see that in the way that he uses lighter where he says exactly like you said this is the game and this is the guy I need to go to hopefully more guys kind of continue to enter that conversation but clearly right now for Craig council with aai yeah being hurt and not being effective Merryweather being out it looked like it might be Merryweather in the early going of the Season before he got hurt but it’s clearly Mark lider Jr now and he’s earned it he he is nasty and I I didn’t realize that either about the usage but that’s also you know one thing where we talk about you said that’s council’s job that’s one of the reasons they’re paying him the big bucks is Bullpen management and understanding the bigger picture and that’s why a move like that Tyson Miller is so important and getting guys healthy and when we talk about should this guy start or should this guy be in the bullpen that’s one of the reasons we talk about this stuff because of those little trickle down effects just having other relievers that are effective allows Craig Council to say you know what this is not a night that we need Mark lighter it would be more beneficial for us if he took the night off and was at full strength tomorrow or the next day and that’s it’s really important it’s a long season it’s why we throughout the offseason we talk about you don’t just need five starters you need Seven 8 9 10 they’re all going to get in there at some point whether it’s injuries fatigue Etc like yeah it’s it’s very important um I do want to give credit too like while you know while we’re giving credit I I mentioned it earlier like Javier Assad it was not his best stuff tough lineup only goes four and 2/3 too many walks but I think that he gutted that one out that was one of those starts you need guys to gut it out when they don’t have their best stuff it’s easy for guys to have the start completely fall off the rails and even though it was only four and 2/3 kept the team in the game he battled and got through it and the Cubs end up winning the game a one-run game five walks and still only gave up three runs yeah it’s crazy because I feel as if even with Assad’s success the CBS are still learning what he has we talked about during the game the best pitchers or if you want to be extreme the ases they perform well when their stuff isn’t optimal or the command isn’t optimal but because of the underlying pitch shapes they get away with mistakes we saw it tonight few sinkers Miss location you even mentioned it Cory oh that was you know center cut yeah the stuff is so unique that is still despite being missed induces weak contact Assad is one of those guys the Cubs may have not been super confident in going into the year in terms of an every fifth day starter the reason is because few pitchers have besides pitch mix and stuff and the stuff profiles as below League average but in due part due to just a lack of similar pictures and a lack of references to compare his stuff too as he goes along and has success it’s more information and reason to believe that AA can be a starting pitcher because despite the stuff not grading well you get continuous results and tonight with the stuff and command not being where it was in the past few weeks it still got results and that to me is really important in projecting pitches long term I just like what I’ve I’ve seen from the bullpen at times I’ve liked what I’ve seen from the offense not recently but early in the season and if you can start to get those two things if you can get everything going at one time that’s when you start to build seven game winning streaks eight game winning streaks yeah this is where you’re just trying one part of the team carries you for a week then you hope the next part of the team carries you the next week so we’ll see how it goes we we mentioned uh Craig Council well he’s going to have his hands full with decisions to make about when to bring guys in because of all the roster moves uh announced before the game was Kyle Hendrick will not make his next start he’ll be in the bullpen instead okay we don’t know who the starter is going to be but it’s not going to be Henrik so he’s obviously struggled uh Smiley three shutout Innings at Iowa PCA to Iowa hit a home run Smiley was at uh Southbend I think Southbend my bad uh don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story hell yeah brother hell yeah brother that was fast at this time of night too right any anyways uh hris is the interesting one because while I I’m still one of the people that believes he he’s already given you one game that you probably wouldn’t have W won without Kyle Hendricks I said I still think he can win you some games somehow this year now maybe it would be a a bullpen now a lot of people I know on on the radio and in live chat a lot of people are saying listen he’s going to the bullpen but this is about service time you’re trying to get him to the 10 years which would be like June 26 27 28 something like that that would give him his full pension and then you could make a decision about whether you want to walk away from Kyle if it’s not working however in the meantime that might be true but in the meantime it’ll be interesting to see if he can do it in the bullpen because you have seen an inning of Kyle Hendrick at the beginning of the games you’re like oh he’s going to have a good game first time through the order he does a pretty good job okay well that could give you 2 and A2 Innings of Bullpen and he might be that guy he might be used in Easy situations where the game’s out of hand and you might just kind of ease him back into it but none of his stuff really profiles like any reliever that you can think of so I I don’t know if it’s going to work I don’t like I could see that it’s possible well I’m curious what the pitch doctor thinks do you think it will work he’s never done it right in few pitchers to your point come out of the bullpen with his stuff we were talking about it maybe a reference is Drew Smiley the comparison is like hris their dominant priority pitch type is a secondary offering in quotes Smiley and knuckle curve Kyle Hendrick would be the change up the way I could see it working is elevating the change up usage because you’re maxing out two innings three Innings you increase the usage from 30 40% upwards to 50 60% because of the intention of only facing the lineup one time that’s where I could see it work out but clearly with Council it’s not primarily driven by Bullpen value it’s driven by getting Kyle right where he can be inserted back in the rotation Kyle said you talked about this Luke earlier on that KY he believes his stuff is looking where he wants it to look better than it was four years ago is that’s what he said if that’s the case I tend to trust Kyle I don’t think it’s necessarily fodder if that’s the case then you have to explore that possibility of him returning I I understand the idea of putting him back in the bullpen If This Were a staff that was fully healthy with Wicks healthy with bull a full capacity with Merryweather alai and so on then of course you know moving on from Kyle may make sense but because of the uncertainty across the staff Kyle represents one of the possible solutions despite having really bad numbers at first if he’s saying he’s good you’re distracting me Brewing uh so Luke I have uh a tweet from our good friend Ryan here um Ryan Herrera Ryan Herrera he said Nico Herer after the game said that Hector nerys started a new tradition player and pitcher of the game get W Flags niik Herer got one for his walk-off tonight and then he said quote nerys has been an awesome Clubhouse guy this year who’s been part of a lot of great teams and brings a lot of infectious energy interesting see the new Pedro stro I mean he he gets hype on the mound I I can see it but I like the all right now we got to look for like photos of who’s got the W flag I would like an intro song for for lighter too like the whole stadium goes black and then a laser light show EDM style you know what I’m saying I I know I’m big on EDM I don’t know if you guys know that but I’m big on Edy I want to derail the conversation but when we get off the air I want to know what you think and all these other guys yeah whatever can’t even imagine what what were you going to say before we went to break about Kyle Hendrick you know Brennan went in on this whole like pit thing that I didn’t quite understand what are you talking about 40 to 60% is easy to understand okay fair enough go back go on Twitter you’ll see his heat Maps you’ll understand I will actually I’m start making what I was going to say is that the only reason that I never really felt good about Kyle Henrick going to the bullpen when people were calling for it in April was because he had never been there before like Brennan said but also I get PTSD because John Lackey had also never pitched out of the bullpen and he had given me one of the most angry Moments Of My Life as a Cubs fan which we talked about during the watch show and um yeah I had to get it into the into the actual podcast so see what you did that’s your fault you brought it up I hope it works out I UND I I kind of understand what you mean by like you know Drew Smiley and him because Drew Smiley also it’s not like of course he went to drive line and now he’s pumping 94 95 I whatever do we need to send Kyle Hendricks to drive line I don’t know but like it’s it’s not like before this year Drew Smiley was throwing hard is harder than it was in 2016 right but but it’s not like a when we say Okay Kyle’s going go to the bullpen and he’s going to be good it’s not like that it’s the potential is there still if he’s going to perform badly then of course the DFA is part of the solution like or part of the next step for the Cubs but it’s still one outcome they have to explore I think when we talk about these pitchers and these players it’s never a certainty that they’re going to perform is what are the possibilities where the team can have success and if you start subtracting those possibilities then if something else happens to the roster in a negative way then you’re pulling from a pool of shrinking possibilities right now Kyle is saying his stuff is good he’s a veteran world serious Champion he expresses confidence as a result you you are required to at least explore that possibility sure if you okay well here’s the question I had for go ahead I was going to say Brennan and then I was going to say Brandon just to see Brandon Brandon we got I’m used to it I can’t even say my own name I slur my R he like bendon I have a speech issue all right here’s here’s what I was going to ask real quick I do so if you’re going to use him in specific situations at first to try and make it work best or find the right fit for him in the bullpen what pitcher would he be best coming after I I always opt to the like most extreme outcomes and one of the reasons is because Tommy H was talking about adbert aleli a few years ago and aleli had moved from the rotation to the bullpen and he talked about how all the s and alai threw more fast balls as a result that triggered a change so with Hendrick if he moves to the bullpen throw him out there in a Max eff scenario let’s see what happens maybe unlocks a different thinking process that leads to him tapping into something that he wasn’t quite aware of that changes his overall trajectory so in that case throw him out there in the sixth inning you get one inning Max it out but would he he be best coming after Ben Brown would he be best coming after low leverage I mean lowest leverage possible would it be different discre in the other pitcher would would would his stuff play best after they’ve seen imanaga for six Innings would it would it play best after they’ve seen Assad for a few Innings I or matters does it not matter I don’t think it matters because they don’t have they don’t have a guy that’s pumping 98 yeah that’s why I don’t think it matters if they had this like weird pit mix and these different like release points that the race had had for so many years maybe it would but I don’t think it matters quite okay you trade for Mason Miller he comes in throwing 103 yeah then you mix Kyle going 90 91 and I like that hitters have no idea what first and then they see that they see the one1 they’re like that was 300 miles hour yeah well there’s your solution right there you trade for Mason Miller and that I just solved it there and that unlocks although the bullpen was great tonight we don’t need Bullpen that’s what knowledge on said Hendricks and the bullpen should always follow someone throwing 95 to 100 there just aren’t that many of those guys on the Cubs especially starters yeah yeah as much as I disagree with what Tyler is saying in the chat I will say that they’re going to probably start him out in low leverage situations there’s no like you you can’t just throw him out there in high leverage it’s a guy who we all would want him Tyler saying why are we been talking about Hendrick coming out of the bullpen I’m pretty sure it’s because Craig Council said they were going to start wanted to double check that we were all on the same page he’s Kyle Hendrick so it’s a topic of conversation no matter what but well he will always go down as a Cubs Legend and all of a sudden start the key for Hendrick is obviously that he’s genuinely not someone you’re going to feel comfortable with in dirty Innings that’s going to be the big key because he he gives up too much contact so obviously there are certain situations if he can come in and get a soft ground ball get a double play that sounds great but he’s a guy that of the mix you have in this Bullpen you really are going to want to avoid on those days where Mike ler Jr is down or other guys are not able to be used for a second consecutive day things like that you you don’t want to bring him in with Runners on because that’s just not yeah that’s I so I don’t know if I’m super confident in this and but when you watch the you should when you watch when you watch the the press conference the other day you could tell Council was he didn’t he didn’t announce it in that confence after the start but you could tell that he was like yeah we we can’t start he said that even like two weeks ago prior to the yeah and the thing is is the pitching’s been so good knock on wood so it continues to keep happening is real that that you might not even better be that you might not even get a lot of opportunities to even see him and so hopefully not yeah like so that’s why in some ways Tyler I kind of agree like why are we talking about like it obviously is important piece to organization’s history but it’s like we’re talking about a guy who’s going to be at the very like joseas before before Kyle Hendrick out of the bullpen at this point and so you know like with the way the bullpen pitching right now with the way that the starting rotation is pitching right now you know yeah I I I guess I can say that I hope that we don’t have to see him but but say you know we we know we’re going to get more games where either the Cubs are up by you know a ton of runs or down a ton of runs and you don’t want to use all your high leverage guys in those types of games so he might get an opportunity to go out there and if he shows some Effectiveness you know it gives you a reason to keep him around like I I don’t who what’s a better option right now that’s an Iowa you know like right like I I don’t really know what is for like the role they’re going to use him in the Bullpen and the bullpen is is fine right now yeah like I figured it would be and credit to you credit to you yeah credit to me thank you um so I I don’t know I I think obviously Drew Smiley and and Jordan Wicks those like those guys are important like I am I’m intrigued to see what they do especially with Drew Smiley when Drew Smiley comes back you’re gonna send Jose quas back to Iowa I assume like one of those like we know that they’re not going to they can’t send Kyle Hendrick back to Iowa cuz they didn’t have any options so I’m intrigued to see how that plays out when guys more guys get healthy out of the bullpen you know so you know Daniel Palencia he he’s shown signs of you know being effective in big moments like I I want him to get to that 10year Mark or whatever but also like you got you got he’s holding a roster spot so in some ways I I don’t necessarily disagree with Tyler on like how much it matters or this or that like like he hasn’t been what we hoped he would be I said on yesterday’s show I give him till miday it’s miday he had one good appearance against the Pirates and then wasn’t good against the Pirates the worst right-handed pitching team or the worst team against right-handed pitching in baseball and we are where we’re at man like that’s why I’m just I I don’t necessarily buy what they’re trying to sell us that he’s going to go with the bullpen and they hope that maybe he can get back in the rotation that I it part of me hopes that he does because they could use the Innings but I just don’t know how he’s gonna have the opportunity it’s a reserve boat if things go arai and they need uh a starter and the health is not quite there then you have Kyle Hendrick maybe as a possibility to return well and whatever they do you got to just make sure that you don’t you got to treat him right right he deserves the respect and you need to make sure you you maintain the relationship so that when Tommy hadavi gets promoted HRI can be the pitching manager whatever you just can’t sour the relationship with the franchise and I AG that so he can be I’m not saying that you need to DFA him right now I’m just saying that this whole bull Bullpen you know thing that they’re saying they’re going to try and do was just like all right well they better start scoring seven eight runs a game and winning you know8 to2 and maybe we can see them come out there and some low leverage situations but what Cory’s saying is is why a lot of people out there are saying oh they’re waiting till the end of June if this doesn’t go well then at the end of June when he gets his 10 years then you can make that decision but you owe him that the full pension for sure in his career he unrelated to Hendrick but I am curious uh like he he only went one for five but one of those was a hard liner like is Ian haap fixed is one game is that all it takes he’s fixed now right fix he had two he had two hard hit balls two hard hit balls only one hit though yeah the double play the double play right into uh Olson’s glove it’s a very well struck ball should have been a double maybe that would have given him the Cubs the lead or tied it at the time Mor the walk they did have some ugly swings by the way in this game multiple multiple guys had some really ug off tonight but they also had some good swings and it just the you know the bad luck didn’t like the half half one we just talked about Amaya who had a who actually did have a good night his last at bat he hit one pretty hard unfortunately right at someone um two good things Morel three walks three walks three walks unheard of like when he first came up yes batting cleanup still day in day out second positive to your point Amaya two walks so you had five Walks from guys who were Maybe by some expectations under producing despite Morel still being above average continue to have positive process over the course of the Season that process you have to imagine is going to lead to base hits runs extra base hits home runs to morel’s three walks it got Morton out of the game earlier it elongated the lineup it allowed the Cubs lineup to have good at best at the bottom of the order Danby Swanson two base hits tonight hit the ball hard played quality defense the process is good sometimes you have the base hits fall sometimes they don’t fall but you want to see the plate appearances look good overall outside of I think seya the majority of the guys did look good uh Joey do we have more Super chats I thought we had a new one come in at some point we do um another one from Ben Cody’s memor is next level I’m indeed Ben the Friday 120 Club bleacher bum from Florida also if you live in the Chicago area get your ass to Friday 1220 by fly from Florida you got no excuses see you there that was awesome shout out to Ben Youk you thank you for the Super Chat and for coming met him and his dad we stood and talked like all kinds of stuff we talked about like growing up Cubs fans and stuff like that yeah you met my dad too in Arizona you you meet everyone’s dads I love meeting other people’s dads I did meet Luke Little’s dad at at spring training this year yeah we’ve had a lot of fun at Friday 1 120 so yeah shout out to Ben for coming out I do remember him saying that he came there was another guy who was hanging out with me and Ben and his dad believe his name was Alex if you’re listening shout out to you man uh he had came from New Orleans and he just happened to be at Wrigley this past weekend with like his brother two brothers something like that all big fans of the show too I haven’t been able to make a Friday 120 Club I’ll get there eventually I know Sean casselli is yelling at me you’re not a bleacher guy I am not I am not yeah you’re spoiled he’s not I’m not it’s a young man’s game not uh well I never was but it’s a separate issue it’s hard to see out there right yeah I prefer the view behind the my skin is still peeling prefer to sit in the front row you know some sh the thing is Cory is people come hang out at Murphy’s and then they go sit in their seats and then they come hang out with Cory’s just an antisocial person I get that it is it is waiting for Ryan Herr I was going to say that uh I I enjoy when you’re watching the game on Marquee and it’s you know trickling ahead yeah right it you see when they you know like Ian hap catches the ball in left field they cut over you start to see the little smattering of green out there and did notice that yeah so is Ryan joining us Ryan is ready to join us you ready for this I have a lot of questions for Ryan there he is here comes so is Ryan on air right now I I got this messed up last what do you mean is he on air looking at him last time he I saw his picture and he wasn’t on air he’s going to be on air why am I set right here Joey’s setting it up right now he’s setting up the ones the twos the threes and the fours how pale I am see how pale I am now and he’s going to be joining us from what Barb likes to call stall seems like w stall is what likes to call it h hello can you hear us Qui on our end can you hear us Ryan I got you can you guys I can hear you but this air conditioning over here is going wild yeah uh Brendan’s really worried about how loud the air conditioner is when it comes on here at chto and we’ve had a guy working on it 12 hours a day for the last 7 weeks well the man practically lives at CH to fix this air conditioner it’s cool in here it is can’t say it’s not cool in here it is nice I give credit to that we can hear Ryan now I think we’re fine Jo we got we got Joey we’ll we’ll well Ryan let me let me let me start we read that tweeters about the uh they’re giving out W flags at the end of the game now yeah apparently yeah that’s uh started by Hector nerys to get uh a player and pitcher of the game W Flags Cubs W Flags um myself I preferred the cowboy hat last year um Nico said they retired it they didn’t last very long but um yeah it’s it’s a new tradition and obviously he uh Hector we some stories have obviously come out throughout the year of just what he brings to the clubhouse we knew that going into spring training when they picked him up that he was a big time like locker room leader um and some you know something small like this small gesture bring the team together kind of shows that what uh we we spent uh more time than some people care to have a spend on Kyle Hendrick what did you think of the do you think it will work in the bullpen I don’t know I I I don’t know he he had I I wrote about it earlier in a newsletter my newsletter this morning um so you should go check that out come a die hard but he uh you know you know that he had the first time through the order wasn’t so bad um had some two to three burst in his starts where he actually looks fine um and maybe that can play out of the bullpen maybe you know team’s not game planning for Kyle Hendrick before a start and instead having to kind of adjust as he comes out of the bullpen maybe something like that can help um he doesn’t have like the kind of v and maybe stuff that you want in the bullpen his change up this last start was actually like whiff rate wise was was a lot better than a lot higher than what it was it’s basically just been the whole year um no I don’t I don’t know it I can’t I honestly can’t give you an answer to that because going into this year I thought he was going to be a very solid four or five for the Cubs and that hasn’t that hasn’t panned out so I don’t know if this uh is going to work out Craig Cil says that the goal is still to get him back on track and back in the rotation um who knows if that happens right so uh this is just another way that they’re going about trying to get Kyle Kyle’s season Kyle’s honestly career back on track um and and just find some more avenues for success for him I don’t think anybody has the answer on whether or not it’s going to work I don’t even think Craig Council knows if it’s going to work Ryan Thursday who do you envision starting the game at least as the bullpen day is it wisneski we were talking Cody corrected me or made it known to me wisneski West neski went one inning tonight in the eighth inning I thought that was interesting given he went multiple innings started for the past few weeks could we see wisneski Pitch Thursday do you think that’s a possibility uh yeah I mean there a possibility considering the fact that he only pitched once I I didn’t look at when the last time he pitched was but um only having the one inning means he’s not taxed completely for it Ben Brown I when when was the last time Ben Brown pitched was that Saturday I don’t remember exactly May Saturday yeah right so he’s he’s should be rested enough for that um but I mean we saw Luke little open game earlier this year right like that could be an Avenue I know Cil kind of said it pregame that you might be looking at more of a bullpen game for the Cubs um and so who starts that game is is kind of up in the air I would expect it not to be Mark leer Jr or Hector ners I think they need those guys for the back end of the game but honestly anyone else seems like it could be fair game Porter Hodge as the opener with we haven’t seen him pitch yet right is is Porter hodj the new Jake Slaughter is that well he needs a replacement he needs a new Allegiance he’s also just been here since like Frid that’s what I’m saying he’s been here a while put him in I’m he might I don’t think he came in and pitched on Friday I don’t think he’s pitched no what about Porter Hodge Ryan is he did you see Porter Hodge with your eyes have you seen Porter hod he’s there he’s there okay uh Ryan I’m I’m curious obviously big night from the bullpen five and a third no runs one hit six strikeouts did Council talk at all about just how good they were tonight uh each guy stepping up and you know just how they’re kind of building out that hierarchy at the back end of the bullpen yeah well I think you got to give a little credit to Assad too I mean he didn’t have his best command today that was pretty clear he had five walks right if I’m not mistaken so didn’t quite have the best command you know the the wind was blowing out uh and he managed to hold them to to three runs to hold the bra three runs and then the bullpen comes out you have Tyson Miller mark letter Jr Hayden wictor nerys and Luke little all holding the Braves down and helping them the Cubs get that win and Extras yeah they’ve been great and I mean I looked this doesn’t obviously include today’s because it might be even better but um you look at the uh what is it the last like two weeks so the last 14 days or whatever for the Cubs or for for bullpens and the Cubs have like the third best ER in baseball like 211 I think it is um the bullpen is like quietly starting to come together in gel right as as as volatile as it was in April and even the beginning of the month like you’re starting to see the the you’re starting to see things gel on that bullpit obviously mark letter Jr’s been one of the best relievers in baseball all year Hector NYS is he he’s he’s gotten the results throughout the year somehow but like the last few times out looked a lot better um and you know Luke little coming out fell behind three and know to Matt Olsen he comes back and gets the out and know obviously Dan Swanson with the heads up play helps him out there a little bit but um yeah I mean you’re you’re you’re seeing the bullpen just you’re seeing guys step up and become more dependable you saw that tonight especially um and it’s like we kind of said like how do you fix the bullpen like part of it is you know you get you get Hayden wisneski what he’s you know he’s been successful and you get to you get to use him out of the bullpen instead of needing him to start games Ben Brown in the same way has had success out of the bullpen now um as the team gets healthier you’re seeing just how that trickles down to the bullpen and now you have guys who are starting to figure it out I I know it’s longer into the season you’d rather have them figure it out at some point in April but um some guys are starting to figure it out and get results and that’s yeah that’s that’s just been huge especially tonight uh this is more so for the chat who’s asking um but did you ask any hard-hitting questions to Ian hap saw some people online today complaining that the score wasn’t asking him hard-hitting questions so did you ask him about his hit tonight and the hard contact he made after his hit we we didn’t talk to Ian today no no Ian all right that’s that’s all I have I mean he he had a nice double and he he probably should have had another hit got you know just happen to go r at Matt ol like any other I guess yeah man that’s I have a question oh you got another question question how after six beers I’m not surprised I it’s only five actually get get the numbers right over here those are all mine actually all his uh did stop laughing uh PCA the the correct talk about PCA a variety of opinions of whether he should have been sent down what was Craig’s specific explanation if he had one or if he had a chance to talk to him yeah so I think the main thing is kind of what we said said um and that they the the the role for Pete was just PCA was just going to get smaller um and if they wanted to have him in that smaller role right now um and then you know Craig said at this point in the season that the answer was just no at another point in the season I don’t expect them to be out till or to not be up again till September but like if that were to happen um that would make sense to want him up in a smaller role like they did last season um but yeah I mean the main thing is getting him down getting him just letting him play every day um you know he came up he contributed he did he did well enough that like he was able to stick around and and he didn’t look I mean his second stint with the Cubs was was much much better than it was last season so um we know that and you know talking to to Jed prame that pretty much echoed that was that the the second stint now with it comes see a lot of improvements um from what he what it was in September his first H with the Cubs um a lot of good things to build off obviously the defense he’d looked like a gold Glover out there a future go Glover um and but I think the main idea is just that you know now that the the lineup is healthy right I don’t think they have any hitters on the I anymore um you you got guys like you know Mike talkman has played well enough to make himself into like a fourth Outfield there or one of four outfielders is kind of what we said last week um you you just not not the room for PCA to get every day at bats on this team and for I think what they decided as the best thing moving forward is to have him back down in Iowa getting every day at bats continuing to develop there and and when the time is right he’ll come back up and and hopefully kind of slide right back in there and cont contribute again right let’s get to the all important who you got because we’ve been on the air for like I don’t know like four and a half hour straight yeah basically four and a half something like that uh who you got now uh before we show who took who I do want to point out as a man of integrity Ryan and I both selected Bellinger I don’t know who did it first but I I said I’m gonna let Ryan have Bellinger I’m just not going to make a pick tonight you have to put it in slack well I said it live on our show on our set is Bellinger even in the conversation sorry there’s one answer no but I let Ryan have him I just didn’t make a pick I took a mile okay you’re discussing who’s losing was I not I was live on our air does it matter because Bellinger did nothing tonight Anda had two walks and a couple it matters for percentage sure I didn’t take himy give me my put my pick up that’s right so I didn’t put it in slack so I didn’t take anybody Luke and I both got L’s today this is the easiest win of all time I had ni he had the game winning base hits It’s you are correct Cal down they’re arguing about who’s losing because they took Bellinger this is all it means nothing just giving list I took a walks in a hit and everyone thinks six blue moons in he doesn’t get it I am fully aware 100% all we know who did you take Cody I took Amaya who everyone is dead they all believe he’s dead okay I took Amaya live on the on the watch along all right and what happened that doesn’t count he played well you didn’t take anybody because it wasn’t in slack so Cody and I didn’t Cody and I didn’t lose we didn’t have any selections tonight Ryan’s about to storm off Ryan’s just going to leave it’s on the internet we’ve been we’ve been live for four and a half hours pick the winner Brendon I want two wins for that Brendan won brenon wins brenon wins for getting to spend time with us credit to me for taking Amaya that way he had a real winner is the friends we made along the way I would say I’m surprised Brendan isn’t AI.. but since we might still be in The Matrix, this proves nothing
Great Win
Welcome back Nico and Dansby. And the pen was lights out yesterday
Sorry Luke. You guys are not the #1 Cubs pod. But I do appreciate Corey and Brendan.
