CULLMAN, Ala. — The Hunt family is proud to announce the fifth Annual John E. Hunt Memorial Golf Tournament, set to take place on Saturday, Aug. 23 at Cross Creek Golf Course. Established in memory of longtime community leader and former City of Cullman Parks and Recreation Director John E. Hunt, the tournament celebrates his legacy of service, passion for public spaces, exceptional sports facilities and dedication to the people of Cullman.
John Hunt passed away in 2020, leaving behind a powerful legacy of civic leadership and public service—one that continues to live on through his family and the community he served. As Director of Cullman Parks and Recreation, John played a vital role in shaping the city’s parks, facilities, and recreational programs to support a growing Cullman. His vision, along with the support of board members and community leaders, allowed for the development of accessible public spaces and facilities that have touched countless lives and helped build a stronger, more connected community.
Following his passing, the Hunt family established the annual golf tournament as a way to honor his memory and continue John’s lifelong mission of supporting youth. Proceeds from the tournament help sponsor children’s participation in recreational sports teams and camps, as well as provide scholarships for young adults pursuing higher education at Auburn University and Wallace State Community College.
“When we first started this tournament in 2020, our goal was to honor Dad’s legacy by establishing a scholarship at Auburn University in his name and we were successful in the first year of the tournament, “said Lauren Hunt Peek, daughter.
“After establishing the scholarship at Auburn University, we were able to expand our focus to provide additional support for children and youth in our community, helping them participate in city and county sports programs through local parks and recreation,” said, Ryan Hunt, son.
Now in its fifth year, the tournament has grown into a cherished community tradition, drawing friends, family members, and local business sponsors together in support of a meaningful cause. Proceeds from the event continue to fund scholarships, youth sports participation, faith based sports camps and other community-focused initiatives that reflect John’s values and lifelong commitment to service.
The Hunt family invites golfers, sponsors, and community members to join in this special event—not just to enjoy a day on the course, but to celebrate a man who dedicated his life to making Cullman a better place for everyone.
