SAN FRANCISCO – Iowa State junior Owen Sawyer sits in a tie for 64th place after the first round of the 125th U.S. Amateur. The tournament is being played at The Olympic Club in San Francisco on both the Lake and Ocean courses. Sawyer played the opening round on the Ocean Course and will play the second round on the Lake Course.
Sawyer shot a two-over-par 72 in the opening round. Starting on the back nine, Sawyer turned in a par on seven of the nine holes. He had a double bogey on the 11th and a bogey on the 17th. He opened the second nine with a bogey on the first hole but had a strong finish with a pair of birdies on the eighth and ninth holes to finish his day.
Tuesday marks the final round of stroke play. The top 64 players in the field of 312 will advance to match play, which starts on Wednesday. The round of 64 for match play will be on Aug. 13, while rounds of 32 and 16 will be Aug. 14. The quarterfinals will be Aug. 15, with the semifinals on Aug. 16. The championship match, over 36 holes, will be on Aug. 17.
Sawyer will tee off at 2:56 p.m. (CT) Tuesday in the second round.
Under Iowa State Head Coach Andrew Tank, Sawyer is the 10th different Cyclone to play in the U.S. Amateur. Most recently, Luke Gutschewski played in the 2022 event, where he earned medalist honors of stroke play. Frank Lindwall played in the event in 2021, while Tripp Kinney and Lachlan Barker participated in 2020.
