ALEXANDRIA
— Charlie Hanson grew up playing in many Resorters Tournaments prior to the 104th Resorters Tournament on Aug. 3-9, 2025. In his eight previous tournament appearances, he hadn’t won a championship but had come close in 2019, as he finished runner-up to Alexandria’s Carver Larson in the Junior 13-15 championship.
Hanson earned close wins on Thursday and Friday to get in the semifinals of the Men’s Championship division on Saturday.
Hanson, a Morris native, edged two-time Resorters Men’s champion Jacques Wilson, 2-1, in the semifinals to set up a championship match with Eau Claire, Wisconsin, native Parker Etzel.
And from the get-go in Saturday’s championship match, Hanson held a lead and never relinquished it as he won the Men’s championship 5-4 over Etzel.
“I played in the Men’s Championship one time before and didn’t even make the cut, so to come out on top now is pretty awesome,” Hanson said.
Hanson, who graduated from Morris Area-Chokio-Alberta High School last spring and will play college golf for the University of Sioux Falls this fall, won holes No. 1 and No. 2 with pars to jump out to a 2-hole lead.
Hanson birdied hole No. 6 to increase his lead to three. Hanson stayed consistent after that, winning hole No. 8 with a par, hole No. 9 with a birdie, and hole No. 11 with a par to increase his lead to six holes through 11.
Etzel, who plays college golf for the University of South Dakota, won hole No. 12 with an eagle and hole No. 13 with a par.

But with a par on hole No. 14, Hanson won the match, 5-4.
“I had a pretty good round,” Hanson said. “I played consistent golf. I had a couple of clutch putts and chips.”
Hanson fell behind by one stroke against Wilson to start Saturday morning’s semifinal as Wilson won hole No. 1 with a par. Hanson answered by winning holes No. 2 and No. 3 with birdies.
Wilson won hole No. 4 with a par to tie the match.

Hanson entered the back nine with the lead as he won hole No. 9 with a bogey.
Wilson won hole No. 10 with a birdie, but Hanson won hole No. 11 with a birdie of his own, then won hole No. 12 with a par to take the lead.
Hanson won hole No. 14 with a birdie to go up by three holes, but pars on holes No. 15 and 16 cut Hanson’s lead down to one hole with two holes left.
A birdie on hole No. 17 sealed a 2-1 win for Hanson.
“It was a good match,” Hanson said. “I was up most of the back nine, and I was feeling good. I was 3-up, and then he made a little run, but then I hit my shot on hole No. 17 within two feet to finish the match.”
Etzel earned his spot in the semifinals with a 2-1 win over Lincoln Johnson. Etzel won hole No. 1 with a par, but Johnson won hole No. 3 with a birdie and hole No. 5 with a par.
Etzel won hole No. 8 with a birdie to tie the match heading to the back nine.
Etzel won hole No. 10 with a birdie, but Johnson won the next hole with a par.
Holes 13, 14, and 15 ended up making the difference in the match as Etzel won hole No. 13 with a par, holes No. 14 and 15 with birdies to go 3-up. Johnson won hole No. 16 with a par, but Etzel won the match 2-1.
Hanson was the No. 4 seed in the bracket and began his championship run with a 4-3 win over Andrew Lindberg on Aug. 5.

Hanson then won a pair of close matches to get to the semifinals. Hanson defeated Nebraska’s Davis Johnson 1-up on Aug. 6, then beat Texas-Arlington alum Kyle Cox in 21 holes in Friday’s quarterfinals.
“This helped me with nerves and I performed well under pressure,” Hanson said.
In the end, Hanson’s accuracy and consistency led him to win the 2025 Men’s Resorters title.
“Early in the week, I was hitting the ball well, then as the week went on, my chipping and putting came on point as well.”
