MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) — Despite the rain, the annual Rhonda Brown Memorial Golf Tournament saw a strong turnout at Myrtlewood Golf Club on Saturday, with 36 teams gathering to raise money for cancer charities and honor the memory of Rhonda Brown, a beloved administrative assistant of the Myrtle Beach Fire Department who passed away from breast cancer in 2011.
Jonathan Evans, captain of the Myrtle Beach Fire Department, said, “I think she’d be happy to know that we are helping other people in her honor.” He described Brown as “a fantastic lady” and “a second mother to many of us who were in the department at the time.”

Participants purchased rounds of golf, with proceeds going to cancer charities or to support members of the fire department family facing a cancer diagnosis.
The cause resonated deeply with many on the course.
Steven Waldron, a master firefighter, said, “It means a lot—like I said my wife had breast cancer and it brings it home to me—I know a couple guys in the department had their wives go through the same issue and it’s a close-knit family for us.”
