J.T. Poston describes the nerve-wracking experience of sitting on the FedExCup bubble during the final round at TPC Southwind. Starting the week 51st in points, Poston explains his hot front nine, a slower back nine, and the emotions of waiting to see if his 48th-place standing will hold for a spot in the BMW Championship.
JT, you started out hot today when it mattered most and kind of started to finish. How do you feel about that start and where you stand now? Um, yeah, you know, obviously happy with the start. That was kind of what I had envisioned coming out today with such an important day, but um, you know, the back nine I just I couldn’t quite get the looks and when I did, I didn’t take advantage of and make the putts that I did on the front. So, um, you know, now we got to we got to sweat it out a little bit, I think, as these leaders finish up back nine. 48. Now, you stay at the course, you go to the hotel, what do you, uh, I got to go pack up either way, whether I’m heading to Baltimore or heading home tonight. So, I’m going to go back and do that. And, uh, you know, I’ll I’ll keep an eye on the on the leaderboard, obviously, but um, we’ll see, I guess. What are your thoughts just kind of riding this bubble line? Sorry, say that again. What are your thoughts riding the line of the bubble? Uh, it’s a grind. I mean, it felt like I I’m obviously not in contention to win a golf tournament there, but it just felt like the same type of nerves. And um you just know what’s at stake getting into that top 50 um and what that does for your year next year and you’re one good way from one good week from making it to East Lake. So, um it’s a big deal making it to BMW. So hopefully it, you know, it holds up, but it’s, you know, it’s a stressful a stressful day for sure. When you mention the nerves, when do those nerves begin? Is it beginning of the week or the day or I mean, I was on the bubble pretty much all week. I was 51 coming into the week and um in a position where I knew I needed to play well in order to get through. So, um, you know, it’s it’s it’s kind of on your mind all week, but you also know that you’re, you know, you go take care of business and I don’t need anything crazy. I wasn’t so far away from the number that I needed to, you know, play lights out. I I knew just playing my game and playing solid could give me a chance. What are the emotions coming down the stretch just knowing what’s at stake? Yeah, it’s again, it’s like trying to win a golf tournament. I mean, you’re you’re trying you’re fighting for those spots and you know what’s at stake and um I’d say it feels very much like trying to win. Cool. Different.
