uh press interview room here the 2025 Farmers Insurance open Charlie you’re very familiar with this tournament obviously coming from here and making your 27th start this week that’s uh it’s pretty hard to believe isn’t it really answer that question yeah I think think I was I know I was 16 when I first qualified for the event I think I played it when I was 17 uh so I I didn’t do the math that was my 27th appearance but I’ve been cting like 31 or two years I’ve been playing this event which is kind of nuts if you think about it but if it wasn’t because of this am qualifier back then as I said that sit on the Range when I was 16 17 years old playing against the best in the world and uh watching them play and being out there I sort of gave me the juices to want to play professional golf and uh it definitely was a a stepping stone of what I wanted to be and what I wanted to do just um coming in here obviously off a really good performance last week you were the 36 hole um leader co-leader and uh finished top five just uh talk about your performance there and having that confidence coming in here uh bringing it to somewhere that you’re really familiar with yeah this is the first offseason I’ve actually been able in the last probably 3 to four years I’ve been able to work and practice and play and work out and in the past was like all right how do I get ready to even te it up on the PJ tour uh back wasn’t any good uh so end of last year uh was nice and then took some time off and then strengthen everything and was able to work on the game and obviously was it showed uh played halfway actually hit the ball really good in Hawaii didn’t putt very good and then last week sort of put both of them together and I had a chance coming down Sunday and uh obviously set played amazing and uh he forced my hand late in that round and I didn’t take advantage of the part three that I sort of went after but I obviously good memories uh there i’ won there in ‘ 07 my second year on tour uh and obviously momentum coming to this event is is great uh body feels good again short week of rest but being home that that helps me more than anybody uh and not having the pound practice rounds out here because I’ve played 27 times but uh so I took nine holes at a time but uh obviously going to ride that way and ride that momentum and uh hopefully try to get knockof a farmers uh uh win out here obviously this one this is the one I’d love to win uh other than a major championship I think this this one or Phoenix would probably be the two that I I put on my list for w take some questions we start with Charlie did the back get bad enough in those couple years where you wondered if you would even be out here point the answer is yes uh I I remember just like putting on shoes and doing stuff like that you’re like am I ever going to be able to play at what I know I need to be able to healthwise be able to play professional golf again and there was a period of time was like I was doing anything just to start and get a start out here not I mean not even being a to put any reps in uh just how can I play four rounds of golf during a tournament which I found very unproductive and not very competitive but uh now being able to put the Reps and I I think it’s mentally and physically uh that you have to be in the right Fame of mind to be able to compete against I mean last week 17year olds and in young 20y olds guys are just much much better much more prepared than I was at that age uh so the answer to that question is 100% I didn’t wasn’t sure if I’d ever be competitive out here again and obviously last year in Phoenix was competitive the rest of the year wasn’t up to my liking uh but this year obviously starting off on the right foot giving myself contention to win as I as I tell people obviously I’m creeping up on the 50 and the PJ tour Champions and uh looking forward to it but as long as I’m competing to win golf tournaments on the PJ tour I want to be out here I want to beat these young guys I want I want to walk down the Fairway they they it’s fun it gives me energy uh it it just I I get I get a kick out of competing against these these kids and uh and I I as long as I’m still competing to win golf tournaments I want to stay out here how did you fix the back just a lot of rehab and put a good team together just uh trusted a lot of people uh did a lot of work in the gym just it it’s not a huge weight training you see in the in the college football or NFL but it’s it’s just repetive stuff uh just to strengthen the muscles around my back and glutes just making everything stronger to give my reprieve my back a little bit few machines lots lots of cold tubs lots of lots of infrared saunas and and stuff like that it just it’s now it’s I spend more time on recovery my body now than I do practicing and banging it up so it’s a lot of recovery uh if if it if it says recovery uh next to its name I probably own it uh I’ll try anything want to ask you about this tournament no no one in this tournament goes back as far as you do at this point um it’s obviously changed a lot through the years are you a little bit concerned about where it now falls on the schedule amid all the Signature Events the Wednesdays start it’s incredibly difficult um are you concerned that maybe the younger guys don’t value the Tory experience as much or the tour players in general just just aren’t finding their way here as much as they did before well that’s a very loaded question uh the answer is I think the community of San Diego took for granted that Tiger Woods virtually showed up every single year at this event the best player in the world and competed to win almost every time he played here and we took it for granted uh now if if you would ask any a lot of these termas if you had Tiger Woods two or three times through the history of the event they were happy we had the Tiger Woods each and every year year and we may have taken it for granted the field is fairly strong is it a bad date I would I wouldn’t say it’s a bad Daye it’s just a tough date uh I mean if if I had if I had the crystal ball and The Jug I I mean I may juggle up the whole schedule not even play a a West Coast Swing in the west coast maybe play Florida first and maybe play the West Coast more in the summer when we all want to be in San Diego I think I mean if I was commissioner for the day I I would take a look at the big schedule the schedule and just jumble it all up and see where where should we start the PJ tour season where is the best time to play these events and do we have to play the whole West Coast on the west coast right after each other maybe maybe not I I think that stuff they’re they’re thank God I’m not on the border do any of that stuff any longer but I think that’s something they’re looking at right now is I don’t know where this tournament could fall better but I does it have to be in January I’d say no you could have this tournament any time of the year here in San Diego and and it’s all better better time of the year than it is now usually we all know in San Diego I mean this is the hardest hardest month of all for uh we’re going to get good weather this week it looks like but uh in the past it’s been a tough week but I I think the answer to the question is it’s it is sort of a tough week for guys in the schedule coming off Hawaii coming off a short we American Express has turned into an amazing event again which it was when I grew up watching the Bob Hope and that event it was it was a premier event it turned back into a premier event again and it’s it’s it’s had its effect on on this week especially with the signature event right after it and uh then not to mention now you have two three weeks Pro AMS which it takes a toll uh and then towards a short week so you nailed it it it is I mean it is a tough tough date as right now as we know uh I think the football schedule change next year I think it’s going to be Sunday finish ideally next year uh for us or try to find a way uh to do that but I don’t think I don’t I don’t think anything’s off the table on the PJ tour when this event could fall to make it a better date sorry one one more do you think the difficulty Charlie this early in the season you go from pretty benign golf courses to this um do you think that that it doesn’t scare guys off but but does it turn them off a little bit that they don’t want to necessarily compete on this type of golf course this early in the season no I I don’t I just think I think you look because strategically the schedule is like obviously you got Signature Events and major championships and those are at the top and you sort of schedule around that how you going to be prepared for those major championships the Players Championships and the Signature Events how you going to Peak at that point in time because those are so the points are so loaded in those events and people are looking at oh do I go play two golf courses traditionally very hard golf courses and is that the best preparation for two Signature Events I have coming up it could or could some people love the challenge and may make those tournaments feel easier to them if they come out here and play well Tory Pines it just matters what you’re looking for and what you want uh tiger always Rises up to the challenge he loved to hear he played here each and every year he could pick pick any golf course to play and he chose here to play and uh it just matters sort of what what you want but it it is how how you going to Peak and be ready for those big big tournaments now and uh it’s it’s just different way to look at it with with the signature events for sure the feeling was incredibly different with tiger here right I mean than anywhere else essentially right we took it for granted there’s not there not there’s not a question in my mind someone who played here for over 30 years you took it for granted that Tiger Wood was going to show up here and the city of San Diego was going to have the best player in the world each and every year at at its event and you it’s sort of reality we’re in reality now of what every other city has to deal with without Tiger Woods or the best player in the world playing playing here on unfortunately Xander one of the best player in the world has an injury he’s traditionally played here and you can’t Xander is trying to get ready to win more major championships there’s no reason to push it early in the year and hurt hurt himself more so you you’re going to see guys taking this week off if it stays in the state no question over this side uh Charlie nothing official yet but um looks like the geneses will be moving here as as a California kid and and longtime California resident do you think it’s important that that tournament stays in California yeah you know what obviously first and foremost my my head’s wrapping around the farmers this week and trying to prepare for this golf tournament and Farmers what they’ve done for the community for so many years here and uh try to put on a good show for that Genesis obviously the platform that we’re going to have to be able to raise awareness of what happened uh in the palace AG is is going to be a few weeks time but uh I don’t know when that’s going to be announced I don’t know where where it’s going to be played but obviously the with the fondness back to Tiger again that he has for Tory Pines it it seems like an easy fit but right now each and every guy in this Field’s working to get into Genesis like myself if they’re not in it uh and obviously as a HomeTown kid I’m wishing I’m wishing it comes here but if it’s in if it’s in Florida Palm Springs or somewhere else I’m I’m still trying to work my way into that that event to try to play against the best in the world but I think the platform here in San Diego uh would would be very logical place to put it uh but there’s so many Logistics when move an event 3 or 4 weeks out I mean hotels volunteers uh rebranding the the site there’s so much that t has to do and I I I that’s that’s a tough tough task and I know they’re up for it but it no matter where they go it’s going to be a tough task to get get everything uh figured out but it it does make the most sense go I think I read 123 miles south and go to San Diego uh especially when me was it this is a major championship golf course it’s going to play like a major championship this week if we don’t get any rain it’s firm it’s fast long the grass is long and uh you can keep that for another two weeks for sure and uh it does make sense but like I said each and every one of one of these guys in this field are thinking about this week and farmers and how we can put a great show on for them and the and support them how they supported us in the past MK before we take your question I just want to jump over to Charlie again you just mentioned Genesis in last year you you got into that tournament by the Aon swing five you’re currently in the Aon swing five from your performance last week and I just wanted to get your perspective on that program obviously you’re probably a strong advocate for it given the the situation that you’ve experienced but just you know what do you think of that program and how do you think it benefits a lot of these tool members yeah the Aon swing five is is crucial to the this signature getting new I I would say blood into the events uh you have you have the the uh 10 that qualif themselves in the fall which I think is great but now you have the five and then then it goes back to the the swing 10 again but the Aon swing five uh I mean it gave me a chance to play the sign event last year it gives everybody hope to get into the events that play against the best in the world and compete compete against the best in the world uh so they on swing five I I I don’t know the exact number but had we had over 30 different new people I think playing the the events uh that weren’t in them last year which is what you want we didn’t want it everybody thought it was going to be shut off we had we had all different people from rookies to Veterans to anybody getting those getting those events and it really did a great job last year getting new blood in those events and having being a tell story lines and I remember sitting in the boardroom saying hey we got to make sure that this isn’t a closed off tour and uh the swing five and the 10 uh definitely made that happen and I think better than we actually predicted and that incentive is obviously pretty strong for you again being the position you’re in right now yeah obviously the west coast is key key to my year getting off off on the strong foot and uh being able to play hopefully next week at Pebble or uh in the Genesis if it does come down here wherever it is it’s but I I love that it rewards guys that are playing good golf there’s a rookie could finish fifth or a guy that took a career money career money list can can make earn their way into those events and it gives you gives people hope that and that’s sort of any golfer teas up you you want to have hope to be able to play against the best in the world and you have the opportunity to do that in a on swing five definitely does that excellent sorry MK go ahead you had mentioned being 17 and being on the driving range and I’m just wondering when you were 17 and you walked on the driving range was there anyone that you were Star Struck by at that time or that you wanted to get advice from I don’t think I I I didn’t know anything back then to be honest with you but but I obviously watch the guys on tour I remember but I remember sitting in the stall and Stadler was to my left and like Jacobson to my right and I’m like I think Jacobson maybe won like the week prior and like I’m I mean I’m I’m a kid in the candy store I mean it’s it’s the best thing in the world and my dad was cading for me I mean I just didn’t know any better obviously young and dumb at at 1617 I thought I could do it and thought I could compete against these guys but I remember I think I three PUD the first three holes and I mean I just I obviously had some nerves but I I was just having so much fun uh just watching them and I I always learned from like watching guys I don’t think I ever really asked anybody at that point in time any advice but I just watched them what they did and how they prepared and what what what they did to be great and uh but I that that the juices I got that week was what made me want to play professional golf there’s not a question in my mind speaking of 17y olds he was one that played last week at the get to meet blades Brown blades was on my junior junior president Cup team uh in in uh Montreal so I knew blades blades is a great kid I I said this last week he’s he was he’s awesome and obviously as I said if he would ask me for some advice I don’t know if I would have told him to turn pro at 17 especially with all this nil money if you could get nil money and feel I mean College college was maybe some some of the best times of all our lives definitely myself I you sort of lose that turnament pro at 17 but I as as far as I know the PJ tour is not going anywhere I would have gave it a couple years even if he was a world beater uh which he is a world beater uh obviously showing that he I think he shot 800 the second round I mean putting those numbers up at 17-year-old on the PJ tour events uh pretty remarkable but uh it’s it’s it’s tough it’s tough sledding out here on the PJ tour it’s not it’s not easy and uh nothing’s given I mean you got to put the numbers up no matter if you’re 17 or 48 you got you got to put post numbers the ball doesn’t know how old you are but he’s uh obviously um tuned in and ready to play play good golf and go low and uh and I I look forward to hopefully competing against plays a few more years before I transition on I uh I don’t know if you know that you were this close to competing him again this week he uh he was in a Monday qualifi playoff and and missed in a I I did see that so I’m sure he’s going to get a few more sponsor invites and I’ll see him out a few more times this year and uh but uh he’s he’s uh I expect bright things in the future for him and just finally you mentioned the the junior president’s Captain what was that experience like for you uh captaining that team yeah it’s it’s one of those I didn’t know how much how involved I was going to be how how much I was going to get into it or or let them just play golf and I I definitely got had the juices going uh wanted to wanted to just teach them they’re so raw just it just teach them uh that you don’t have to shoot at every pen that you know have to birdie every hole and uh sort of stuff like that and they they took it all in and my my cad Andy Barnes and I came out there and we just just sort of mentored on more than anything obviously once they got on the golf course let him go play golf but just sort of game plan strategy how to how to map a golf course when you’re walking around and sudden just just playing uh but uh they were all great kids we had we had and it was a great match gr dlet had a great team for the international team and uh it it was a ton of fun and uh then we took him over to the President’s Cup after that and walked to practice round and got to go in the locker room with the uh with the with the real real president Cup team and those guys were obviously very were very gracious to the team and uh it was it was just a total blast do do you feel like you came away from that with a little more incentive or you know for your own game after being around those young kids there’s no I there’s no question I love feeding off the young kids and their energy and just that just the Fearless fearlessness they they play with and that’s something at the older age you sometimes get a little conservative out there which I wouldn’t say it’s always been my soup but sometimes you notice it and how Fearless these young kids are playing the game of golf and definitely it it gave me a little bit of energy to uh want to play better all right take one from the lift Here Charlie poway’s finest Charlie when you come back home and play in front of family and friends and just get out here and whether you do good or bad how cool is that for you just to be back home and just swing in the sticks in front of your family and friends yeah you you know what like I said I did it when I was young out here and had a ton of family and friends and they’re still out here supporting me and it’s it’s it’s sort of crazy to think that I’m I mean I always look up Phil no longer playing the PJ tour but he was he was the guy and I always looked up to him and he always supported the homet talent event and and now I’m sort of the older guy uh and hopefully we get the the town out here supporting me and uh putting a show show for them but it’s it’s great to have the local local fans I mean I think this community rallies around the Padre’s rally around rallies around the local San Diego people and uh it I can’t wait to see them uh hopefully late on late on Saturday you one last one told Charlie did you getting like Uncle Charlie nicknames from the those young guys or anything I mean were they needling you about your age or anything still being out what was what was the interaction it no it’s funny you say that some of the guys are I mean they’re so young that they don’t I wouldn’t say they don’t I mean wasn’t haven’t been that competitive in like three years so I mean I mean they know who I was but they don’t really know who I am and then I’ll pick up a wedge and I’m like maybe you should hit a shot like that like oh you you you KN you do know what you’re doing it’s it’s a uh it’s sort of interesting that these these kids are so raw that I mean I played majority of my career before they were born or some of it before they were born you go on a side note I was Eric W’s a good friend of mine and Eric wles is coaching uh played Safety for the Chargers whoever doesn’t know that in uh then Baltimore and then one the Super Bowl with the Rams but he was coaching RBI with his son as of late and I ran into him and he said it’s it’s really weird these kids don’t never watch me play in the NFL because they’re so young they not that they don’t respect them but they don’t really I mean the pedigree of Eric wed teaching you you don’t really these young kids I think take it for granted almost that uh what they have in front of them but uh it’s hard it’s hard sometimes because you got to step back and go I do know what I’m doing but let them I I’ve always been an advocate of you have to learn from your mistakes and then learn from that and you can teach them from that those situations and uh it’s these kids these kids are fearless and until they make mistakes they really you’ve got nothing nothing to say say to them but uh they definitely respect I mean to answer your question they total respect from all these young kids they were they were awesome and uh the international team also and it it was a blast to be a part of it and see and and leave it at this is the future of our game of golf is very bright and they’re very very good kids and uh and it’s it’s going nowhere and people are passionate the young kids are passionate about the game competing and uh doing it the right way all right Charlie we appreciate the time and good luck this week appreciate it [Music]
