I fell into a bunch of marine vinyl and needed to redo my wall protection and sound dampening.

I did a test run of one (pictured) but had some questions for people that have made their own before.

  • Did you use 1” or 2” foam inside?
  • How did you avoid the vinyl sagging? Just coating the foam in spray glue?
  • Are Z-clips the best way to connect to the wall?
  • Any helpful tips?

I used a 3M multi surface spray adhesive, sprayed the marine vinyl and stuck to 2” egg crate foam, stapled to 3/8” particle boards. I pulled the vinyl tight and stapled multi directionally. To attach to walls I used two sided velcro (3 strips) as a “temporary” hold and also used splotches of loctite polyurethane adhesive. I’m in the midst of building my sim and just finished mounting.

ETA: I used 24×48” foam and used 23.5×47” particle boards. “Squishing” the foam helped keep it in place.

Copied from another reply I made in the past.

Building out my own, here’s the process if you’re interested.

[https://amzn.to/4jC3xAE](https://amzn.to/4jC3xAE) I bought 2 rolls of 5 YD of that in black, I cut this directly in half long ways by about 28”. These routinely go on sale with a 20% off coupon you can apply.

[https://amzn.to/4jJgXLo](https://amzn.to/4jJgXLo) I bought two of these 2” king mattress pads

I went to Home Depot got 2 sheets of plywood cut in half and then cut 4 ways there so each sheet of plywood made 8 squares.

I’ve been playing with the corners a little bit to figure out what looks best, this is my first time ever doing anything like this and it’s not hard, just time consuming. They look very premium in person.

Just pretty much compress the foam slightly and staple down each side pulling tight and then figure out the corners but I’ve been pulling them down in one direction to make the outside ones look the cleanest.

I purchased heavy duty Velcro and used that to secure them to the walls. Has held up great so far.

I’m doing these now. I bought a pneumatic staple gun and it works really well.

I used 2″ memory foam mattresses from temu.

The corners are a bit tricky, I keep iterating how I do them, but found a nice way to get a clean square corner. Bought some vinyl glue to tack down the corner cut.

Haven’t figured out how to mount them yet, so I’m in the same boat as you!
