Let’s be real. The worst driver tip many people still believe, and I was guilty of it, too, is that just swinging harder makes the ball go straighter and longer down the middle. That advice is absolutely ruining your T-shots. Today, I’ll show you a smarter way to manage your driver, know when to actually pull it out, where to aim, and a simple fix to reduce that ugly slice and hook. Let’s go. Here’s the truth. Most people just grab driver without even thinking. It’s almost like a default strategy. But you got to ask yourself this question. Does this hole actually require the distance? And does it reward the position of hitting driver down there? Let’s take a look down this hole for an example. Now, this might sound obvious, but it’s really not. I see it. Golfers might bomb one down the previous hole and think, “Hey, you know what? I’m going to do the same thing again on this hole.” You’ve got to treat every hole in isolation. So, let’s dive into this here. You have to look at where your ball is realistically going to land. So, I would just sort of drag this little point around and go, “Okay, I hit my driver 210. I might hit it 230. I might hit it 250.” Wherever you decide your average drive lands, not where it rolls out to, where it lands, then you have to weigh up the trouble there. So, let’s say 240, 245 for me. And let’s zoom in on this here. I can see this is right on a pinch point in this fairway. So now I’ve got a way up. Is driver worth it? Is it better to actually hit a hybrid in that position, lay it up short, then pop it on? Because if I hit driver all the time, actually 80% of them could be in the absolute rubbish, meaning I lose loads of golf balls. Whereas, if I play hybrid, wedge it on, hit it on, over the course of 10 times of doing that, my scores could be significantly lower. In fact, I know they will. But let’s play out the scenario where most people are. Most people carry their driver around that 220 mark and it rolls out to 250. So, that changes it completely. The fairway here is a lot wider, but there is trouble on the right. So, there’s a few bits we’ve got to do here to build into our strategy. We need to be aiming more up the left, giving oursel a chance of opening up this hole. So, every time I get to a T- box, I weigh up where my ball’s going to land, where the trouble is, and if there is a risk worth taking in order to hit driver. I can’t wait to reduce that curve for you. How straight you’re going to hit it and far is absolutely mental. Let’s talk about teeing this up. Now most of us we had a little bit of a fade and also we saw the trouble was on the right hand side of this hole. Now default tea positioning with a slight little fade and trouble on the right hand side. You have to get teeing it up over here. This has to be where we tee it. For a right-handed golfer trouble on the right means teeing it on the right hand side. Most people default and tee it up in the middle. Also a little hack that I have. Look at this. I now point the line of my ball to the left half of that fairway to really give me a great way of aiming. Now, this is super essential. Never aim your feet first. Always aim your club first. So, you’ve got the line on your golf ball. We’re going to use that to help us point down that left half of the fairway. Oh, I’ve got that absolutely spot on to begin with. Look where that line’s pointing. left half of that fairway, which is dissecting through somewhere here. Better luck than judgment. Sometimes that might need changing and you might need to do it again, but it shouldn’t take too long at all. All you’re then doing is when you’re putting your club down is making sure, now this is so easy. This is pointing this line exactly where you want the ball to start, your start line, your ball to target line. Make sure this line and this line create a 90° angle. then you know your face is aimed correctly. All I’m looking for you to do then is take your stance where your feet, your knees, your hips, and your shoulders and your forearms are all parallel to that line. Now look where I’m aiming. I’m actually aiming into that area there away from the trouble. So let’s hit this one away. Right, that is where we’re aiming. We’re aiming away from the trouble with our tactic on this side of the box. Look at it just curving back around. That is just such a great strategy. Now, if you see that shot right there, that definitely deserves a follow and a subscribe to this channel because that was just taking the trouble completely out of play. Now, we’re not stopping there. Never aim your feet first, always the club head. That’s the tactic I just used. Now, let me show you if you do it the opposite way around. So, if we still take that left half of the fairway and I first aim my feet to that left half of the fairway, I then get my ball the target line to be parallel to that. We’re now actually aiming in the middle, not the left half, which brings this trouble into it way more. Now, when you stood over the shot, you might feel, “Oh, great. Yeah, from my perspective, I’m aiming correctly here. I can see I’m aiming my feet left half of the fairway.” But remember that’s shifting your ball to target line further to the right. So you’ve always got to aim your target line first, then your feet run parallel. Work up from the ball club into the body. I love this. I just know how many shots you’re going to save. This is the real light bulb moment for when you start to reduce that curve and hit it dead straight. Ball position essential starting point. Now, when we’re stood here with driver, everybody goes, “Put it on your front foot.” Sounds familiar. Worst thing you can do. Now, let me show you. The golf swing is built on an arc. Now, you can see here we’ve got this section of the ark, this section of the ark, and this section of the ark. Now, if we tee the ball up right on our front foot, what direction? Yes, this is exaggerated slightly. Are we going to be swinging in at that point of impact? Well, the answer to that question is left, out to in. If your face is open to this, this creates that sicey spinoo, lots and lots of curve. Equally, if we had the ball way back in our stance, what direction on our arc are we going to swing now? We’re going to swing significantly more into out face close to this massive hook. Terrible. So where should we have it? This is answer the question. Now if my ball is in the middle of my stance and around low point and let’s say low point was in the middle of our stance. It’s not. This is not the answer. This would allow us to swing where? Dead straight to target. Now when I fix your face in a second for you, that’s going to produce a beautifully straight shot. But that’s going to compromise us slightly. Now, what I want us to do is I just want us to move our ball a teeny tiny bit forwards of middle to where it’s roughly a club head inside our left heel. Right? So, let’s say around here now. You’ll notice that’s actually starting to get us to access a tiny little bit of that left part of the ark. Well, you’re going to fix that by just pinning that right shoulder back. It’s roughly about two inches ahead of middle and yeah, two inches inside your left foot. So, really, that’s a great measurement right there. So, you’ve moved it slightly forward, but you pinned that shoulder back to counteract the fact that now you’re swinging just slightly left. that is allowing us to hit that ball at low point, sweeping it away lovely, but not having an arc that’s too bias to the left or certainly too bias to the right. That is your ball position. That’s what you got to stick to. Let’s now fix this face. Now, most people slice it because their face is ridiculously open at impact. This hack is a joke. It makes sure this doesn’t happen pointing to the right and open. It means it makes it come in more like this or even potentially a little bit making you draw it but only slightly like maybe a yard or two draw like those pros here and your face is open because of your grip. So to fix that part of your routine now place the club out to the side of you as I have here. And you’ll notice the toe is pointing in line with my toes just like that. This is a key bit. So let’s come in close. You want to make sure now when you’re putting your top hand on the golf club, you want to make sure your top hand thumb is on the left hand side of this shaft as you look at it. Because look, my grip now is significantly stronger, meaning I can close and rotate that club head through impact. Look how much I can do there. Right? Look how much I can do my grip. Whereas if you’re a slicer, your grip would be more here. Look how hard for me it is to release that club. And if I made it even weaker, it’s even harder. Now, there’s not a one-size grip fits all method. This is going to take a little bit of trial and error, but this is the starting point I want you to go of. Your grip is going to look something like this. Now, away from something like this, more like this. And if you start to curve it more draw bias, you’re just going to edge it in this direction. So you’re going to edge it from here over in this direction. But let’s start with hitting one here. We’ve taken to account the trouble. We’ve gone to the right hand side of the T- box. We’re aiming up using the line on our golf ball. We’re standing in the balls a club head inside our heel. We’re tucking that shoulder back. We’re taking that grip. Watch this fly. Now I’m actually going to see how far I’ve hit this from the tea. I’ve actually pushed it a little bit. So, I’m a little bit further right. Big bump. I’m a little bit further right. We managed to be over here. I’m a little further right than I anticipated, but because I planned that strategy from where I wanted to hit away from the trouble to then where I teed up on the T- box and where I aimed down the left, that push was no trouble at all. So, we’re trying to be about here, but we’ve ended up slap banging the middle. And 267 yards with driver is not bad at all. Let’s save that. And I start to build up a great image of exactly how far I’m hitting this golf ball. Oh, look at that little cool piece here. So, thanks so much for watching. If you want to download the Grint as well, I’ll leave a link down below in the description. Thanks so much for watching.

  1. Do you have a playlist for a brand new golfer? I don’t want to teach my son my bad habits 😅 right now we’re just putting and chipping (only thing I’m confident teaching him) but just got him a set of junior clubs and I’m sure he’ll want to start swinging soon. Thanks!

  2. Very recently these very dynamics started clicking with me finally and man, I've been getting much more consistent drives which is building my confidence off the tee, it's a game changer for sure!

  3. Tee placement tips are greatly appreciated Alex! I've been starting from the left side and aiming up the left but your logic beats instinct. Tips on hitting from thick rough? Especially short pitch distances with a wedge. Rough as tall as the ball is a nightmare for me.

  4. My last 2 rounds have been my worse since I started a few months ago and it's been because of driver. I will be taking this to the course tomorrow!

  5. I’ve been golfing for 15 years and no one has ever given me that advice or anything close to it before. I’ve never once heard any golfer tell another golfer to swing harder and it will go straighter.

  6. Great info. Thank you !! Can you share what app you use for your Golf GPS? I like yours shows what the distance is to a specific point
