ALEXANDRIA — Josh Bell, the No. 8 seed in the Junior 13-15 Division in the 104th Resorters Golf Tournament at the Alexandria Golf Club, came away with a 20-hole victory over the No. 1 seed and co-medalist, Jaxn Hacker, in the quarter-finals.

That wasn’t the only upset. Lower-seeded qualifiers defeated higher seeds in two other matches. The only high seed to advance is Henry Buttweiler, the No. 2 seed.

Bell def. Hacker in 20 holes

Starting from No. 10, Hacker took the first lead of the match on No. 12 with a birdie. Bell quickly erased that with four straight wins — Nos. 13, 14, 15, and 16, sparked by three pars and a birdie. The golfers tied on the next two holes, Nos. 17 and 18, with a bogey and a par. Bell won No. 1 with a par to go 4-up, but Hacker answered with a par on No. 2 to cut Bell’s lead back to three. Hacker also won Nos. 4 and 6 to get within one. After they both parred No. 7 and 8, Hacker won No. 9 to tie the match and force extra holes. Bell won the second extra hole to seal the win.

Nelson def. Langley, 4-3

Maybe Traeton Nelson, the No. 5 seed, is still pumped up over getting a hole-in-one on No. 11 during the qualifying round. He parred that hole against Luke Langley, the No. 4 seed, that gave him a 2-up lead after two holes. Nelson added a birdie win on No. 12 to go 3-up. Langley got back into the match with a birdie on No. 14. They tied the next two holes before Nelson made par on No. 17 to go 3-up. Langley rallied with a a par win on No. 18. Crossing over to the front nine, Nelson won Nos. 4 and 6 to notch the victory.

Buttweiler def. Schiena, 1-up

In a close match, Buttweiler built a lead in the first nine holes against the No. 10 seed, Drew Schiena. Starting from No. 10, Buttweiler won four holes — No. 10 with par, No. 12 with birdie, No. 14 with par and No. 17 with birdie. Schiena won two holes — No. 13 and No. 18, both with pars. Schiena won No. 1 with birdie, but it turned out to be his last win. They tied on the next eight holes to give Buttweiler a 1-up victory.

G. Johnson def. Sherlin, 3-2

Starting from No. 10, Johnson, the No. 6 seed, won the first hole with par and added two more wins — a par on No. 13 and a birdie on No. 16 to go 3-up. Thatcher Sherlin, the No. 3 seed, won No. 17 with par to cut the deficit to two. Johnson kept the pressure on after they crossed the road. He won three holes, Nos. 2, 5, and 6 with pars, while Sherlin won two holes, Nos. 3 and 4, with pars, resulting in a 3-2 victory for Johnson.
