We have so many remarkable golf courses to play in the UK, with a significant number of them ranking among the finest on the planet, but you might believe that these incredible layouts are ridiculously expensive and out of the reach of those who don’t have the deepest pockets.
That is certainly true for some, but not all, as there are wonderful venues throughout the country that deliver an exceptional golfing experience without the eye-watering cost to accompany them.
But what qualifies as a great golf course? Ultimately, that’s in the eye of the beholder, which is why we’ve deferred to the Golfshake UK Top 100, which has been determined by the everyday golfers who submit reviews and ratings on this website.
Each of these courses boasts a minimum of 25 independent reviews and an impressively high rating to go with them – and they can be played during the peak months of summer for no more than £125, with a large proportion of them being under £100, not exactly the cheapest of green fees, but when you consider the quality of the destination and the expense seen elsewhere, these are places that you really should consider playing in the near future.

Royal North Devon Golf Club
Location: Westward Ho, Devon
Golfshake Rating: 4.84
Summer Green Fees: From £60
Review Comment: “This is the oldest golf club in England and the course was designed by Old Tom Morris. It’s a fantastic links course with some unusual holes – notably the 4th which features a fairway bunker with a 25ft wall. The course was in great condition with fast undulating greens. The clubhouse is very pleasant and features an array of golfing memorabilia which is well worth a close look. This is a must play course if you find yourself in the vicinity.”
Long Ashton Golf Club
Location: Bristol, Somerset
Golfshake Rating: 4.83

Enville Golf Club
Location: Stourbridge, Staffordshire
Golfshake Rating: 4.81
Summer Green Fees: From £110
Review Comment: “Impeccable condition. Greens fast and testing. Friendly clubhouse welcome. Two brilliant championship courses. All four players commented that every hole is interesting unlike most courses where there are 10-12 mundane holes.”
Aldeburgh Golf Club
Location: Aldeburgh, Suffolk
Golfshake Rating: 4.80
Summer Green Fees: From £80
Review Comment: “The course exceeded my expectations, found it a really great test of golf. The greens were true but not too quick, fairways in excellent condition, but it does play long when the wind gets up and although the fairways are generally forgiving enough for you to score well, a bad shot will be punished severely should you go into any of the gorse that lines most of the fairways, all in all it is a proper championship golf course and you will need to be on your game to score well. Will definitely return.”
Beau Desert Golf Club
Location: Cannock, Staffordshire
Golfshake Rating: 4.78
Summer Green Fees: From £100
Review Comment: “The club were very welcoming and the practice facilities were excellent from driving range, short game area and putting green. The course design is pleasing to the eye with holes sculptured through trees and heather. The bunkering adds to the beauty. The greens were large and slopping so positioning your ball was vital to scoring well.”
Royal Cromer Golf Club
Location: Cromer, Norfolk
Golfshake Rating: 4.78
Summer Green Fees: From £75
Review Comment: “Marvellous course. One of my favourite courses and the amount of work going on here means it should get better. It’s a top 100 course for some very good reasons and you should get along here and find out why. Some excellent holes, some fabulous views. Lovely people make it work too.”
Sandiway Golf Club
Location: Sandiway, Cheshire
Golfshake Rating: 4.77
