►Spinning the trail arm by Pete Cowen is widely misunderstood but it is something I am actively working on with a student using Hackmotion.
Understanding this transition move can help you compress the golf ball, hit it further and consistently longer too.

Happy golfing ⛳⛳
I I talk about spinning the arms the clubs in position spinning the arms down there and make getting shaft pressure and face pressure as the body is open okay yeah simple as that that’s all I’m trying to achieve with everybody make it as simple even a mini shot here I’m trying to get the arms spinning spinning down so the arms are getting lower to a point but I’ve not flipped the hands and then I’m just turning the pressure on with the body and then there’s no stress in the lower back at all and I feel as though I’m I’m almost hitting the shot like that yeah as opposed to catching up like that catching up so again same thing yeah okay today let’s talk about Pete C spinning of that trail arm it’s a movement pattern from the top of the back swing which every golfer can achieve and that’s the beauty of you don’t need to be strong you don’t need to be flexible it’s all about sequencing but also in this video I’m going to help you try to understand a little bit more about it and we’re going to be using a case study as well you may recognize this case study Alec from a previous video where where I was actually with him in Dubai he’ flowed all the way from Georgia USA to Dubai to accompany me in a proam event out in Dubai and we did a video talking all about his journey and the perks of obviously online coaching F the fact were thousands of miles apart and we can still make some really incredible changes to his golf swing one of the key aspects we’ve been working on I work on on this with all of my students because it is the most important aspect of the golf swing and that is impact trying to get we all want to strive to get better compression hit the ball further more consistency and we don’t just look at this from a fairway we look at it from the from the rough as well so I recently just kind of kept urging Alex to go and get hack motion because it’s going to give us a real good insight into his wrist angles during the golf swing and what he then did was went and did a 10 shot diagnos IC and we’re able to get some numbers based on his swing now what you can see from Alex’s consistency is that set up on top of the back swing are fantastic the the inconsistency was an impact so you can see how extended his left wrist was basically meaning a shorten this he was scooping through the golf ball and then flipping it a little bit through impact so one of the drills that it then encourages Alex to do is an impact drill where he just brings a club back to a roundabout waist height and then pushes through impact and rotates and as you can see he can literally do this drill in his porch at home the benefits of the drill is trying to understand the impact position really get a feel for where his hands need to be relative to the club header impact and as a result of that start to feel more shaft lean as he comes into impact as well and even just hitting these phone balls away he’s able to feel that comp pression and that movement pattern as it comes into the golf shot okay so bringing the golf club back to this point here on the takeaway and then also then doubling this up as the delivery position allows Alex to then just really feel how he’s going to really move into the golf ball how he’s going to move that weight into the lead side how he’s going to allow the hands to kind of really maintain that hinged position as he comes through so into there and then he pushes through and he gets straight away he gets that audio feedback as well from the hack motion with the with a nice GRE with a nice green all over his screen green all over his screen and the actual noise as well and again this is something that you can do at home you don’t have a hack motion you can just see there how I was able just to hit that shot I’ve literally hit it 40 yards so get yourself onto the driving range this is a 99 in hand bring the Golf Club into this position here shaft of the club parallel to Target now from here you’re going to hit your shot and you’re going to really feel like you’re going to move into that lead side and you’re going to rotate and the better you weight shift and then turn that left hip around the left heel the better you’re going to be able to maintain the hands coming into impact if your lower body only rotates but stays behind the golf ball your hands are off and going to move into this extended position that Alex was doing as he came into impact so go into takeaway pause weight shift into that lead side and also as well even on that s such a short shot you can feel the quality of the contact you can feel the kind the golf ball kind of hitting two or three grooves up the face as opposed to hitting low so you know that you’re compressing down and these top grooves are just getting a bit closer to the golf ball as opposed to anytime that you’re scooping the ball you kind of hitting those bottom grooves now at the very start of the video I was talking about Pete Count’s spinning of the trail arm and this is is something that we’ve been work I’ve been working on with Alex to get into that transition of bringing the the golf club down into this delivery position feeling like the face angle there as you can see stays parallel to my spine angle and when I create that motion that’s me now spinning this forearm down it’s not to be confused with that motion spinning doesn’t have to be fast doesn’t have to be 360° it’s a movement and again that’s sometimes where Pete’s message can be lost in translation is how you understand it really I suppose so I would just get into that top of the back swing position there and just push I feel like I’m I feel like I’m closing the face on the way down I feel like I’m really turning my forearm and extending it downwards cuz my forearm now is pointing at the screen whereas I get to the top of the back swing here is pointing across so from here it’s turning anticlockwise towards the screen okay and that’s spinning it’s spun a few degrees it hasn’t done a 360 it hasn’t gone fast okay so it’s just turned it’s rotated on that movement and that way then I’m able to keep the golf club head higher than my hands which brings me to this delivery and fatted it on that occasion but this is what encourages you then to be able to compress and hit down onto the golf ball okay so the spinning of the forearm will bring you in into the correct delivery position and it’s a really like I said before it’s not a it’s not a hugely athletic move and again in the previous video with Alex you saw that we did a lot of drills CAC handed so for for me as a right-handed or him as a right-handed golfer you put the left hand at the bottom you just swing up to the top and then from here you what you’re doing now is you’re bringing this Trail elbow slightly flexed into the stomach so as you’re doing so that for now is loaded up okay we’ve got the shaft angle parallel to Target we’ve got the face angle just ever so slightly towed in so parallel to spine angle and from here it’s it’s a powerful move understanding the spinning of the forearm is really key cuz it’s not a full spin it’s not a fast spin it’s a small movement from the top of the back swing and we do all of this without worrying about lower body just yet we get to that position first and then we push through so I can there now combine the hack motion drill of bringing it into the delivery one of Pete’s favorites is feet together and just combine the two and just work on that real kind of compressed Power Shot as it pops out and then you you’ll notice the difference in your ball striking massively I can’t begin to explain the difference this will make so if you do it like I said understanding that movement pattern understanding thing the spinning of the forarm on the way down is crucial and using this drill using the the uh the CAC handy drill is also really really good and the drills just like Alex is doing the drills that you can do at home with or without hack motion are vital to the game to your game in the long term guys thank you so much for watching I hope you’ve enjoyed the video if you have you know what to do please hit that subscribe button and there’s so much more content Great stuff
I know my plan for this weekend cheers. How you getting on with the gt3? Just ordered mine can't wait
Isn’t the “twisting the forearm down” achieved by bowing the left wrist down the same? As I watched you in this video, that is exactly what I see happening! It is a movement that closes the club face in the downswing.
Spinning the arms? It just sounds so wrong. Why he chooses such an inappropriate word is mind boggling to me. Good teacher with some indifferent teaching which seems intentional to confuse for some reason. 😂😮
People still obsessing over this absolute tripe 💤💤💤
GOLD !
Great vlog Andy – always a joy to see you with Pete Cowen as well.
Cheers
After you take your club to parallel in the BS, you appear to take it back a bit more before you start your swing to impact.
However weight shift/recentering happens before the arms start coming down, and very often before the backswing with the arms has actually completed. Watch any pros swing in slow motion and, unless you have the same ability to deny reality as a flat-earther, you will see it. These drills don’t help the amateur as they are all out of sequence. Pros can practise the drill as when they actually hit the ball they weight shift first as it is so ingrained in their action, unlike most amateurs.
@andycartergolf closing the face on downswing is creating good compression but causing a pull hook. Any way to remedy this?
I see some of the Mac O'Grady or MORAD in what Pete Cowan is explaining. I read somewhere that he was quite fond of his teachings.
Spinning is just the worst word for this
….fatted it, because club head was lower than the hands 😉
All golf coaches make up nonsense to justify their existence.
The best golf swings never need ANY of this complete NONSENSE.
Thank you for FINALLY explaining the meaning of "spinning down the forearm" – because Pete never did anything but repeat the phrase over and over again!
Thank your for making this make sense lol
Excellent coverage of the move into impact, starting with a lateral shift back over onto the lead side, then followed by the lead hip rotation opening up onto the target in conjunction with the upper body rotation/ pivot down into the bank of the ball. It’s great to see just how open you upper body / chest is by impact. Myles
After learning and trying all sorts of releases this I think is by far the simplest and consistent approach.
Spinning the trail arm down, without body rotation, should ground the club a foot or so behind the ball. The movement requires and encourages good lower body movement and sequencing in order to shift the low point through the ball.
Well, the toe of the club should turn down in the transition. Obviously, a player can't actively turn the toe of the club down, if they did they would be studying the effect and not the cause. But, you can see that both Jones and Hogan turned the toe down in the start of the downswing. Perhaps more so with Jones. So, I have to say I'm surprised by the introduction of what is in effect early supination, by Hogan's definition of the word.
Bravo!! This lesson is by far the very best lesson I ever seen! Thank you so much for your excellent explanations! SO GOOD! 😍👏👏👏👏
Anti clockwise in the transition and then clockwise from the hitting area through impact. Am I interpreting this correctly?
Do you need to modify this approach for the driver? Thanks –
Is this swing pattern the same for driver or different?
Outstanding video, Andy!!
Pete’s concepts are sometimes hard to grasp. You do a really great job of communicating his concepts to the masses.
Still would like a better explanation of Pete’s concept of how to load the shoulders for a fade vs a draw. Have not found this yet on YT.
Nine minutes to try to explain something that should have only taken 60 seconds. If you want to get help with your swing, avoid all these money chasing YouTube "teachers". Instead, find someone you can get lessons from IN PERSON. Everyone's anatomy and swing is going to be different. John Daly didn't swing Moe Nowman's swing, he has a swing that works with his anatomy. Both were amazing ball strikers. A true teacher will help you discover your own, peculiar natural swing, not just copy some boiler plate ideas.
I felt this wonderful, powerful, compression feeling during this morning's round.
