A new viral video has reignited Donald Trump’s notorious reputation for bending golf rules – this time at his beloved Turnberry course.
Caught red-handed, the US President was filmed allegedly giving his ball a cheeky nudge with his club, while his caddie was seen appearing to slyly dropping another into a perfect lie.
But while Trump might have a ‘helping hand’ on standby, most golfers don’t have that luxury.
An authoritative expert from American Golf has now stepped in with advice on how to get yourself out of trouble on the course, offering practical tips for recovering from tough spots while sticking to the rules.
While Trump continues about his imaginative ways, many average golfers cannot follow suit or risk ruining the game for good.
Lewis Baker, Custom Fitting Expert at American Golf, says: “Golf is a game of integrity, and tricky situations are part of the parcel of the sport, whether it’s a drive that’s veered off the course or finding yourself stuck in the rough.
“The key is knowing how to recover properly. Learning the right techniques – and brushing up on the rules – not only helps you escape through tough spots, it builds real confidence in your game and keeps things fair for everyone on the course.”
Key tips for staying out of trouble
Master the punch shot
Baker outlines: “If you’re stuck under trees or buried in thick rough, don’t just hack and hope. Often, a controlled punch shot is your best bet for getting back in play safely.
“Try using a short iron, keep the ball back in your stance and focus on clean, crisp contact to keep the flight low and controlled. It’s all about minimising risk and setting yourself up for a better next shot.”
Learn bunker discipline
“If you’re plugged into a bunker, don’t panic – but remember, grounding your club or testing the sand before the shot will cost you a penalty.
“Instead, stay calm and commit to a firm, confident swing with plenty of follow-through to blast your way out cleanly the first time.”
Know your drops
“If your ball ends up in a water hazard or an unplayable lie, don’t just make it up as you go.
“Knowing your official relief options – like lateral drops or stroke-and-distance – can keep you on the right side of the rules.
“Taking the right drop not only avoids penalties but can also give you a much better shot at saving par.”
Brush up on the rules
“The R&A has simplified many of the game’s rules in recent years, making it easier than ever for amateur players to stay on the right side of the scorecard.
“Whether it’s knowing what to do if your ball accidentally moves, how to take proper relief, or when you can (and can’t) clean your ball, a basic grasp of the rules can make a real difference.
“It’s not just about avoiding penalties – it gives you the confidence to play smarter and fairer, whatever the situation.”
