Séamus Power has put himself in position to make the halfway cut at the Wyndham Championship but will return on Saturday to complete the final seven holes after play was suspended due to lightning.
After an opening one-under where he dropped three shots in the final nine holes, the Waterford man began round two on the 10th tee and birdied the par-4 11th before following with seven pars and turning in 34 to move to -2 overall. Another birdie on the second took him inside the provisional cutline, and after rifling a 161-yard approach to just outside six feet on the third, he was eyeing up back-to-back birdies before the hooter sounded, and it soon became apparent that play wouldn’t resume until Saturday morning.
Power needs a victory to push his way into the top 70 in the FedEx Rankings and earn a place in next week’s first playoff event, but that is going to require something special over the final seven holes of round two and over the remaining 36 holes should he make the cut.
That’s because Cameron Young has moved to -14 with three holes to complete in his third round.
Young made two straight birdies to move ahead of defending champion Aaron Rai and then stuffed his tee shot on the par-3 16th into 6 feet when storm clouds gathered and halted play.
The second round was to resume at 12:30 p.m. Irish time on Saturday, and the third round will be played in threesomes starting on both nines at Sedgefield Country Club.
Young is considered among the best players to have not won on TOUR, twice contending into the final hour of major championships. He has seven runner-up finishes on the PGA TOUR, including The Open Championship at St. Andrews.
