If you’re struggling to hit your driver straight and find more fairways, this lesson will give you 3 simple checkpoints that every golfer—whether beginner or experienced—can use to build a more reliable and repeatable tee shot.
In this video, I’ll break down the 3 critical areas of your setup and swing that directly impact your driver accuracy and ball flight:
⛳ 1. Leg Structure at Setup
Your lower body is the foundation of your swing. I’ll show you how to create proper leg structure at address to increase balance, reduce sway, and allow for better rotation through the ball. This alone can eliminate a ton of inconsistency off the tee.
🏌️♂️ 2. Proper Hand Distance from the Ball
Too close and you’re jammed; too far and you’ll lose control. I’ll show you exactly how far your hands should be from your body at address with the driver so you can find a neutral swing path and avoid casting or early extension. This position helps set up everything in your backswing and downswing.
🔁 3. Completing the Backswing
One of the biggest causes of slices and weak fades is not finishing the backswing. I’ll show you how a complete turn—without overswinging—can help you sync up your arms and body, generate more clubhead speed, and hit the ball with confidence.
These checkpoints are simple, actionable, and proven to help golfers hit more fairways with the driver. Whether you’re trying to stop slicing, increase distance, or just build a better pre-shot routine, this video will give you a reliable blueprint for success.

Is that good with hips? It’s good. Really good. Oh, dude. It’s a nice ball flight, Dante. Yeah, that was hammered. So, the thoughts right now are like hips. I’m kind of like hips. Yeah. Cuz I’m not doing it by this. I’m kind of curling. Bring it in a little bit. That’s fine. You know, as long as you maintain your tilt. Yep. Exactly. Cuz Yeah. We don’t want Sometimes people tuck this in, then they get that little bit of a look like this. You can bring it forward, but just keep your tilt. And then I would tell you that same stuff in the back swing. Left side. Yeah. The left side pulls through. We talk about connection in the back swing all the time, right? Yeah. A great feeling of connection in the down swing is what Dante’s feeling right now. Those balls all landed, by the way, in the exact same spot. Those are great. The lead side of the body from pinky to pocket keeps the hands moving with the body’s rotation. Keeps the upper body in sync with the lower body as well. I like the thought a lot. You know, it’s not here and here spinning out together. It’s here and here. So, it’s hips and hands firing and the upper body follows, which is great. It’s a perfect sequence for the golf swing. My favorite feel in golf is when post impact when I reach here. That’s a good feeling, isn’t it? And a lot of the time when I play bat, I feel like the hands are either in cuz I’m like trying to pull or out. See, that’s when I felt this lead. Yeah, it’s exactly what happened. Your arms are still going. You didn’t complete your back swing there at all, though. So, that’s when I could probably And on course, it’s so much easier to get short. That’s that’s the only thing I’m worried about, you know, because it’s like if we’re looking where we’re looking right now, that’s not going to get longer on the golf course. You have to really make sure to complete your turn. That’s exactly what I was talking to you about. Before you rush that down swing thought, make sure you are 100% committed to that back swing completing your turn. Okay, you’re good. Get a little closer to that ball. Awesome. Right there. Good, buddy. Yeah. Now, now just try to feel the same feeling we talked about. Just be more patient up to the top. Let it let it build a little bit and let’s just work on getting the arms and hands moving with the body on the way through. That was really close right there. Yeah. The one thing I saw you doing though, you were like that was pretty good ball flight right there. Um you’re getting far away from the ball. You know, I like seeing with the woods, I want to see the hands underneath more of the mouth, right? You were up there towards the eyes a little bit. Okay. Yeah. And this this is good for you to checkpoint with your students as well. Once you get the hips over the ankles and the shoulders the appropriate distance past your toes for irons, hands are hanging right underneath the shoulders. So from your perspective here, right underneath my shoulders. Now from the camera’s perspective, if I’m holding a wood, it’s more underneath my mouth right there. And I was and you were literally out towards your eyes right there. Okay. So you probably about good two inches too far away. And you know what that’s going to do? If you’re too far away, you’re never going to be able to get on top of it. You’re underneath the whole time. Yeah. Even if I’m on top because it’s so forward, the plane is Yeah. under. Exactly. Yeah. And I think I do that on the course actually. I feel like I stand like pretty far. Okay. So, that feels like an inch closer. Now I feel super on top. So, I have no choice but to go. It’s way better cuz like what I like about that one is like those last two you didn’t even hit perfect, but the ball flight was so much better. You know what I mean? Cuz if you would have made that same swing from where you were high, it would start high. Right. Exactly. Get one more go there, brother. Okay. Yeah, we hit some big setup key checkpoints today. Hips over ankles, hands under more of the mouth with the woods. More underneath the shoulders with the irons. That’s good for distance from the golf ball. Beautiful, bud. Beautiful. Best one. Set up. Set up. Set up. Set up. That was a good ball. Awesome, buddy. Hey, love you, man. Love you, brother. I’ll see you soon. See you soon. Yep. Sounds good for today, man. Real quick, I’m going to recap it real quick. Okay. Hips over ankles. Hands under shoulders with irons underneath mouth with the woods. We’re going to focus on still working to complete the back swing. Yeah. Okay. Don’t don’t rush the down swing thought. And then that feeling of pinky to pocket. Just go. Feel like that goes. Yeah. It’s a good feeling for staying connected in the down swing and just letting everything commit, you know, be every club from like 50 yards 60°ree to driver. Yep. This all connected as one muscle. I’ve said it five or six times in this lesson. I’m going to say it again. Just don’t forget to complete the back swing. and then execute that field. Yeah. See, I I’m can feel myself wanting to just There’s that spot up there that you have to hit before even a decky drill. Just I think that that that’s why I like that drill. Hitting a spot you know you need to be at before. Yeah. Go. Yeah. Exactly. Good. Awesome. Your tips over the years helped me break 80 for the first time. I shot a 79 this morning on a 6550 yard course! Thank you very much!
I've been watching your videos for months. If I remember everything, my shots are epic and straight.
Thank you so much for your help.
Love the setup checkpoints. Getting properly setup gives me the best chance to execute a decent swing! Great video!
Looks like Rory's may be a mixture of the two at the moment when it comes to hand position. Looks like his left hand is under his shoulder, and his right hand is under his mouth.
