Edmondstown’s Thomas Abom and Fionn Dobbin of Malone lead the way at the halfway mark in the prestigious Mullingar Scratch Trophy, but it’s all to play for with a further 16 within five of the lead.

Abom carded rounds of 68 and 69 to reach the seven-under mark, but a double bogey on his penultimate hole in round two cost him the outright lead and a two-stroke cushion, while Dobbin, after an opening 70, birdied his 36th hole to earn himself a share of the lead going into the day two and the final 36 holes.

Edmondstown is well represented at the top of the leaderboard with Lorcan O’Connor holding sole possession of second place on -6, one shot adrift, with Douglas’ Jack Murphy, Mullingar’s own Adam Smith, and reigning West of Ireland champion Dylan Holmes in a tie for fourth at -5.

Holmes was the biggest mover in the second round, birdieing four of his final five holes on his way to a six-under 66 that was the low round of the day and got him to within two of the lead.

David Reddan of Castleknock, Tralee’s Mark Gazi and Cian O’Connor of Roscommon complete the top 10 on -4.

Defending champion Brian Doran of Millicent’s reign is over as he missed the cut which fell at +3, leaving 45 players contesting the final two rounds.
