“You brought insight into things that the viewing audience could understand and relate to.

“From all of us – thanks for the memories.”

He wasn’t the only legend wishing the Australian the best for the future.

Golf icon Jack Nicklaus added his voice to the chorus of congratulations.

He said: “Ian has been great for the game of golf.

“He was a good player with a wonderful personality, and he has been a great addition to the CBS golf broadcasts.

“We wish him well and congratulations.”

“I was fortunate to compete against the best players in the game and more recently work with the very best in television.

“To my CBS Sports family—my teammates, producers, directors, and crew—thank you for your extraordinary talent, dedication, and camaraderie.

“You’ve made every moment in the booth a joy, transforming broadcasts into cherished memories.

“To my colleagues across the industry and golf fans around the world, your support and shared love for this game over these decades have meant everything.

“As I step away, I carry with me immense gratitude and pride for the moments we’ve shared on and off the course.”

Baker-Finch began his career as a professional golfer in 1979, and found initial success, including a win at the British Open in 1991.

A sharp decline in golfing form saw him retire from the sport early in 1997, at which point he shifted his focus to commentary.

He started with ESPN and ABC sports in 1998, before switching to CBS in 2007, where he would remain an announcer until his retirement.
