Veteran Mark Hubbard broke through with arguably the best feel of his career during the final round of the 2025 Wyndham Championship, dialing in his tempo and making a crucial putter adjustment to surge up the leaderboard and into a tie for second.

Key takeaways

Tempo mastery: Hubbard felt the smoothest rhythm he’s ever had—crediting a switch from 20g to 25g weights in his putter that kept him confident on the ultra-fast Sedgefield greens.

Process over scoreboard: Stayed “within myself” by avoiding early leaderboard checks, then peeked at Nos. 16–17 only when he sensed a chance—and delivered with clutch birdie looks.

Maturity moment: After a rough Day 3, he putted for an hour and got PT, treating Thursday like any other preparation day—a “grown-up” approach that paid dividends.

Playoffs bubble: With second place up for grabs, Hubbard’s fate now hinges on final standings—he’s ready to celebrate at the bar or pivot to Memphis depending on where he lands.

Next steps: Plans to relax, “take in what I just did,” then decide travel—Memphis flights are shorter than Reno, so he’s keeping options open.

Hey buddy. Heck of a day. Thanks. How do you feel about the day and what was cooking for you overall? Yeah, I feel great. Um I that was the best maybe I’ve ever felt uh with my tempo, which is is something that I struggle with from time to time. Um I don’t know what happened or or what I did to make that feel so good. I I’m going to think long and hard about it because I want to replicate that uh as often as I can. Um, but yeah, I just had a great flow out there and um made a little adjustment after the round yesterday with the weight of my putter and that uh that helped a lot. The greens just man, they got so fast Friday to today. So, uh just that little extra weight uh made a big difference. Specifically, uh I went from 20s to 25s, so I guess 10 grams cuz there’s two twos. So, to 225s, so five each. 10. Yeah. So, with a good tempo, were you pretty relaxed out there overall? Yeah. Yeah, I was. I mean, I really wasn’t nervous until my putt on 18. Um, and that was one of the better putts I hit all day. So, uh, I I did a good job of just kind of staying within myself and not checking out leaderboards, mostly because I, you know, I in my head at the beginning of the day, I kind of thought I might need like a 59. Um, so I it wasn’t really much in my head. I was just trying to play as good as I could, but once I got to like 16 17, I took a peek just to see and then it was like, “Oh, okay. Shoot. If I get one, maybe two more, we got a chance.” But, uh, yeah, looks like I might come up one one or two short, but uh, either way, you know, made a lot of points for the fall. What does it say about you as a competitor at with your back against the wall, you did step up pretty strongly this week? Yeah, I mean, more so even than than back against the wall, like I’m just really proud of myself after yesterday. Yesterday sucked real bad. Um, and you know, I could have easily thrown the towel since it didn’t look like it was going to be possible to get into that second place. Um, but you know, I puted for an hour after the round yesterday, went and got some PT, treated it like any other day. I just I don’t know. I I’m not always the most mature person and I felt like a grown-up last night. Um, and it paid off today. How aware are you that it kind of looks like 282 is what you’re going to need? Yeah, I I think I either need it to stay exactly how it is or someone to get to 17 so I don’t feel as bad. Um but uh yeah, we’ll see. Nothing I can do about it now. What is your um kind of next couple hours considering you might have a spot in Memphis or you might not. How do you do your travel right now? Um I don’t know. I’ll figure that out later. Right now, you know, there’s no playoff for second, so probably going to go to the bar, wait for Joel to finish and and see where everybody ends up. But nothing I can do about it. I mean, tomorrow is a travel day either way, whether it’s Memphis is easier to get to than Reno. So, uh it’ll be a shorter day if if I do get in. Is the current flight like to Reno or did you Yeah. Yeah. Current flights to Reno 8:45. So, we’ll see. Overall, is it like like what’s the overall emotion right now? Like, are you happy? Are you kind of bummed about the team? Yes. Uh yeah. I mean, I I’m so proud of myself. I played so well today. Um, I really want more than anything in the whole world to just to go home. Uh, which is which, you know, sounds crappy since, you know, everybody wants to be in my position and and wants a chance to go to Memphis. Um, so, you know, that that in its own way will serve as a challenge if I do end up getting in to kind of get my head wrapped around that, hey, now I got a chance to get in the 50. So, I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it. Um, but right now, yeah, I’m just going to go chill and and, you know, relax and and take in what I just did. Drink of choice at the bar. Dealer’s choice. Like you were between clubs there on 18 at the end. Yeah. Yeah. I I don’t remember the exact numbers, but I was kind of in between uh six and seven. And I just thought it was tough because out of that first cut, it comes out a little spinny, so it’s going to go shorter, but I’m on a down slope, so it’s going to go farther. We had wind behind our back. I just, you know, I knew even if I left it where Patrick did, I was still going to have a putt at it. Long is dead. So, I went with the seven and and felt like I could just make a little bit freer swing with that one. Thanks, guys. parts.
