so you get to mount all the time but as soon as you get there you either get bridge and rolled people hunkering down and pulling their elbows to their ribs and not allowing you to do anything leaving you feeling hopeless and without a plan of attack if that’s you this video is going to solve all the problems you’ve been having from Mount show you distinct ways to get to the highest percentage submissions and make sure that Mount becomes one of your favorite positions as opposed to one of your least favorite enjoy i ideally what we want to have happen getting towards mount is we’re going to get there with an under hook so like the situation most likely is from like a half guard where you obtain crossface under hook you start to come up into a high tripod put your forehead on the mat and then extract your leg with butterfly hooks um there will be situations where you don’t get to mount with an under hook and they’re probably going to keep their elbows nice and tight and try and prevent you from getting them one of the simplest and easiest ways that I’ve started to think about doing this is not by keeping my shoulders on the same line as his because you might find it really difficult to get inside this space and then get your elbow down to the floor but taking your head off center so that you can find the space not in his armpit cuz that’s going to be the shortest amount of space or the tightest amount of space but down near his elbow where you guide the back of your hand underneath and start to widen your hand as you turn the corner so essentially what I’m doing here is going in flat and then turning it sideways to open up the space between his elbow and his rib sometimes when you try and go underneath here they just bump you off forwards and you end up going out this direction so I don’t think it’s always a viable strategy again we’re thinking about this in terms of us landing here with under hooks nine times out of 10 but if we don’t this is how I want you to go for it so you’re going to take your head off center and then start to open the space by turning your hand at his elbow as soon as you get there don’t try and lift with this it’s going to be extremely weak just drop your elbow down towards your knee or down towards the floor and then start to walk your elbow across the mat then you can start to take a cross face and then we’re going to start the finger walk and then ratchet and when we ratchet we’re trying to take our head again to the other side of the body and then extend our elbow there’s actually really efficient way to do this i’m not trying to just lift with my bicep against his lat cuz that can actually be quite difficult even if you’re much larger than your opponent but if you walk your hand so you get tension in their elbow and then you start to take your head over the other side in this direction you can then start to plop your elbow down a little bit further up than you originally had it and then you can start to extend again notice how I’m taking his elbow towards the top of his head which is where I want it and I’m also not giving him space to be able to bring his elbow back to the inside cuz I’m dragging my body weight over this side making the gap between my elbow and his shoulder a lot smaller if I just try and lift from here sometimes you get to the edge yeah exactly sometimes you get to the edge of the elbow and they just bring their elbow inside if he tries to do that same motion with me my biceps actually in the way because of the way that I’ve taken my head over the far side then I can just start to ratchet walk ratchet walk and then when I get to this position where his elbow’s up above his uh eyebrows here I can go bicep to bicep or elbow to elbow however you want to think about it and now when he tries to get his elbow free it’s extremely difficult if you find that they are getting traction towards the inside of your pec here I just want you to lean your shoulders forwards over his face we’re not trying to smother him at this point if he gets smothered you know bad luck on him but they’ll usually turn their nose in towards their own stinky ranger armpit and you keep your chest forwards and now I’m not exerting any force any energy i’m not squeezing anything but if he tries to get his elbow back from here it’s going to be extremely difficult cuz I’m using my entire body weight so one more time when we’re in this position we land in mount without an under hook this is a good contingency plan to start to get one i’m going to take my hand over in my head over the far side of his shoulder i’m going to peer in and then widen my wrist and widen my hand so that this space can fit my elbow in it once I can fit my elbow in it I just drop my elbow down towards the floor and I make sure that I’m not too far towards his arm where too far towards his elbow where he can start to snake it in and also not too far towards his shoulder because if I try and ratchet from here I’m going against the structure of his body and it’s not going to work somewhere towards the end but not too far is a good idea so I usually try and aim my bicep to like the middle of his bicep and then we’re in a good spot so we claim our cross face and then I walk my fingers until I get a lot of tension in his arm and then I take my head over the far side and straighten my arm then I can drop my elbow further along up towards the top here than it was previously which means I’ve gained territory on his arm then I can get ratcheting again once his elbows above his shoulder line it’s very easy just to claim your other elbow now you go elbow to elbow if he tries to buck and bridge and bring his bring his elbow down you just grab your elbows lean your chest forwards you want to try and touch your forehead to the mat or as close as you can again if he gets smothered that’s a hy problem you’re not aiming for that but it is helpful and then he can’t get his elbow back from here and we start to work let’s give that a go then we’ll look at some submissions once we get his elbow up towards that last position we looked at we’re going to have two problems we’re going to have the problem of getting his elbow across to the other side of my body and we’re going to have the problem of him extending his arm completely and basically the same thing but there’s one of them where we exchange and we can start to walk his elbow across and this works quite nicely so we can start to pummel our other hand down and then my chin’s already over the other side sometimes when you do this they will throw their arm down your back no good they’ll throw their arm down your back and this can be quite annoying ordinarily what happens though is when you make this pass off from the cross face being on this side to the same side as their arm you can start to drive your head and your shoulders forwards which does end up getting rid of the hand behind the head then you just pummel your chin over the top and go back into your katakami the second problem that I find is the most annoying from here is when they just keep their arm flat like this where your shoulders are horrible they keep their arm flat like this and their wrist really far away so even when you do what I just showed you their hand kind of doesn’t go anywhere and they run their bicep into their own head at this point when this happens use this hand to start to peel their wrist and their elbow down in front and then use your chest behind it so that when he tries to rotate his hand back into that position it’s extremely difficult and again I really want to emphasize I’m not squeezing my bicep here to facilitate this i’m using my left pec at the very end of his elbow again not too far where he can start to bring it underneath but just in the right spot and you’ll feel it when you do it to uh pull his elbow across his body and so if he tries to bring it back he has to go through my entire torso and that’s obviously very very difficult so once you’ve done this and once you can get your chin over the other side of his elbow you pass back underneath as you pass back underneath you want your right arm to be as loose as humanly possible you don’t want to be flexing tension into this because then you’ll have a gap on this side of the artery once it’s nice and loose you keep your strangle side palm down and then you can start to wedge his shoulder further into the strangle as you try and get your ear to his ear and your forehead down to the mat too many times you see this when people go up here and they just squeeze a bunch of tension in the back of their neck they’re not actually closing this side effectively because of their head position so once you get his shoulder into the strangle where you want it you go ear to ear you try and get your forehead down to the mat and the strangle is not a pull up in the back of his neck it’s a rotation of your head and shoulders towards the other side of his body which feeds this part into my other bicep so once I’m in this position I go palm to palm i start to lean everything down on top of him i’m using my chest and my pec into his shoulder and I’m just slowly leaning all the way over the other side you don’t even have to give this any tension he’ll tell you that there was no pain in the back of his neck if he does a filthy liar but it shouldn’t be tension like obviously he’s not breathing heavy at the moment we aren’t doing a round his heart rate’s very low even though he’s had two monsters today you should be able to lean and get this ideally if you can do it onehanded in drilling have a crack at doing it one-handed i think that’s a good thing to start to practice cuz it will force you to do this side properly this arm isn’t really doing anything except w grabbing the grip like this and widening your elbow so that if he does buck and bridge to my left side my left side I’ve got a physical barrier here all of the time you see this people think that tucking here because squeezing both biceps is appropriate and then they get bridged over or they have to release and then he brings his elbow back down and beats you so once we’re in this original position and I’ve gone elbow to elbow I’ve got the problem of him either throwing his hand down my back keeping his hand on the floor yeah or just mean being unable to get the elbow across the center line so it doesn’t matter which one it is we’ll go hand behind the back first if he’s doing this it’s actually pretty good defense on his behalf you’re going to start to go um pass off sorry to the far trap with the left hand and then you’re going to walk your head your chest and your shoulders up to the other side making sure that your pec my left pec in this instance is behind his elbow when he tries to pull his hand back he’s going to go through my whole body and it’s going to be extremely difficult if his hand’s laying out flat like this and you’re doing what I told you and it’s just not working grab his wrist and forcefully start to take it across this other side you’ll realize if you’re paying attention that this will lead you directly into single chest wraps and we go into back takes and all those sorts of things later so it’s always a good idea to remember this we’re going to go back into katakatami for now once I’ve got his elbow in position I get my chin on the other side of his elbow which when I take my left pec away will stop him from taking his elbow to the other side i lift his head up i pass off i make sure that there’s zero tension in this right arm once I’m in this position I can start to double up and just make sure everything’s tight in the perfect spot and then I go palm to palm lean all my body weight down to the side notice how I don’t dismount completely because I don’t want him to roll away i just lean my body weight over the top of him strangle the life out of him let’s give that a go

  1. Every video is a masterpiece. Great conceptions in different positions and situations. Little things, which changes game. Thanks, Josh

  2. what if he bumps me to one side when I am setting up the arm triangle, with my hands occupied arround his head

  3. blue belt here, i often have the problem that i can´t get my arm thats wrapped around their neck, below their jaw if they are just looking down very stubborn. Do you have a tip for that?

  4. so, this video specifically shows attacking only an arm triangle. is this the approach you should always take? the safest? why not go for an armbar, americana, etc? just curious, i do really love the arm triangle but it seems like the entire video is a setup for an arm triangle, not just broad / general mount

  5. Similar to Gordon Ryan’s methods. Although the dismount at the end is no longer favored by modern practitioners like Josef Chen and Tackett . They like to finish from Mount

  6. Cheers. mate.
Love the content, love the details. I've always struggled with just doing the finger-tippy toe thing to walk up my opponent's arm if they are strong and really want to keep the arm down. Tried to force this position yesterday and just adding the ratchet movement made it a lot more viable already (same goes for the "underhook by proxy" during knee cuts btw).

PS: any chance we can get Spewie-themed rashguards?

  7. Any move works great when you are twice the size of the guy on the bottom. I have never been that much bigger unless the opponent is 8 years old. Worthless video.

  8. Thank you for the great tutorials!
If you enter mount without an underhook or crossface, is it an important detail that you get the underhook BEFORE getting the crossface?
Around my 30th replay of this video, that stood out to me as something I’m doing backwards.
In positionals at my gym, I’ve always gotten the crossface first (best I can remember). I’m hoping that getting the underhook first will improve my mount.
