Billy Horschel’s dad wouldn’t let him play on a golf course until he could hit it over the water
my dad said he would never allow me to play a golf course i could never play it like holes he’d never take me to the golf course to play until i could hit it over the pond or the back of the creek of our yard which is 100 yards in the air he’s like i can’t stand playing behind people who can’t at least fly the ball 100 yards in the air you know it just they just they hit it 20 yards and they drive your golf cart 20 yards and they hit another 20 yards and it’s just so slow so he’s like you’ve got at least hit 100 yards and so i don’t know what age that was and i did it and my mom was home and i came running in i was so excited and um and so i just waited out in the driveway until my dad came and i literally he probably came close to hit me with the truck or something but i mean he couldn’t even take one foot step out and i said i hit it over the creek and he’s like okay good job now you gotta go show me that you can do it again you know i i don’t you know i know you said you did it but you got to show me that you can actually do it

Great rule of thumb for a kid.
Your dad was a smart man, grown men come to golf courses and can't hit it 20 yards and just totally screw up a round of golf for everyone on the course.
New face of the PGA tour.
Some of us need to learn at the course we don’t have a a pond and a creek to hit balls over in our back yard we have more houses and cars bro we ain’t dats why u play thru golf should be done at watever fuckin pace I want not wat ur fuckin awesome dad wants
That’s a good dad
Was it just me, or did that story take forever to get outta his mouth?
Dad says I can’t play until I hit a ball 100 yds. <End>
Nobody gives a s… about this mediocre golfer.
Dad sounds like kind of a jerk. Apple from the tree.
You dad must know mine. I had to prove I could hit a 7 iron with 2 hands as far as he could with just 1 hand (about 100 yards), before I could play a regular golf course.
I expected his dad to say "OK, now do it 17 more times" 😂
I hate being stuck behind complete hackers who grossly over estimate their ability. What’s worse is they usually don’t look behind to see how many pissed off groups they are holding up or in front of them and realise how damn slow they are and they’ve fallen a hole or two behind. The first thing my dad taught me once I could hit a ball was course etiquette and pace of play. It seems no one gets taught that anymore which is frustrating.
Billy’s dad is the person you don’t invite to your golfing group.
I think his dad did him a favour. I played pitch and putt before I played a real golf course. People just turn up having never played and expect to do anything on a par 5? Good luck, they become frustrated and won't enjoy that. It should be highly recommended that you should start on a range and maybe a par 3 course, those are fun things to do. First time I walked onto a course, it was horrible lol. A tough tough day. I guarantee you that if someone is just topping the ball 50 yards , fatting it 20 yards all day, they aren't enjoying that, and in turn nobody else does. You can say people are being stuffy etc, but it's not, it's just passing down your "wisdom" of knowing how golf is. Golf will suffer if every beginner just goes to a par 72 and learns from there haha
Go Gators
I've heard that in some European countries you are forced to start out golfing at the beginner courses, then when your game/handicap improves you get to play the better courses. Too bad USA doesn't implement something similar.
My dad did the same thing except I needed to be able to hit over 150 yards.
Until you can hit one shot with each club dead straight with proper yardage consecutively don't play. That's 13 shots in a row. Otherwise waste of money and other golfers time
My dad did the same thing to me, so I wouldn’t hold people up
I take my 9yr old daughter and just chips and putts with me. Imo it’s best to learn from green to tee anyway
my dads rule was always not until you can hit it straight
Same thing i told my son hes still trying
This is wholesome
If only adults would follow this advice
This is a good dad. They're are way too many people that don't belong on a golf course.
Golf is not a race it's a game
Interesting…. I never had a dad to take me to play golf. I had a stepfather who was a golf hustler, that’s how he made a living. He took me at 9 years old with my mom to a local country club driving range for him to hit balls. My mom asked him if I could hit a few. He went to the clubhouse and returned a cutdown set of clubs the head pro had made for kids of members to use. I had never even touched a club in my life, just watched. I proceeded to hit balls right balls straight down the middle from the first swing. By the time I stopped, I had about 10 members watching me hit, amazed it was my first time swinging a club.
My stepfather would never take me to a range or course again after that first time. Years later, after I had been playing for about 10 years after taking up the game in high school, he told me he never took me again after that first day because he instantly saw that if he had and helped me learn, I would have been better than he ever was and he could never have that happen. And never apologized for it.
Glad you had a father that took an interest in you playing. I never did.
Great story 😩
I know a few people that should take this advice, I play with a guy sometimes that's a 52.5 handicap, personally I wouldn't play if I was that bad but it's a long game when he's playing
You are indoors, Billy Ho. Please remove your cap.
I don't know anybody who can't drive a ball over 100 yards. Including my 80 year old, partially disabled, father
Makes sense to me
I'm the player your dad was talking about, but I still love playing.
Billy’s dad must hate Billy. Slowest player on earth
Me and my buddy went golfing this past weekend and had a cart, some guy was walking the course and keeping up felt like a scrub
Wow that's a sh1t story who is this fool
They go to the course and his dads first shot goes 20 yards.
So his dad is an a$$?@[€ just like Billy
I wonder how many golf balls are in that water
My grandpa taught me and brother similarly. Grew up hitting balls into the woods behind their house in Illinois until he finally took us to the local course. It’s good advice and personally i think will make someone enjoy the game more
That’s the kind of snobbery that ruins golf and stops it progressing and coming bigger.
I said what I said, deal with it
or the opposite situation where you can hit the ball 300 yards anywhere but straight, so you have to choose between a search and rescue mission after every tee shot or going through 2 boxes of balls a round 🥲
Fantasy golf he did awesome today go Billy don't let me down man get those birdies let it fly good luck my man hope you see this ! God bless
That was a whole lot of words and we didn’t really progress that much in the story
Sounds like a man with a major ego issue. Not good parenting
Your pops would
Def bash my head with his club
I grew up in similar circumstances but my Dad wouldn't let me play until I could fly over the creek.
Cool story, Hansel….
I don’t love this mentality, because how is someone supposed to start or get better? They pay just as much as you to get on the course and are trying to get better and have fun. I don’t mind waiting for people when playing
Someone should impose this rule on Riggs….
