Just an Average Golfer giving unbiased opinions on all things golf, product tests, Golf travel vlogs and golf news!
for me I describe golf as an eternal search as I wonder the shores of Lake olw waterer embracing the autal beauty of the Lake District my mind wanders back to Gulf and this week’s burning question will jumbo grips help the average golfer play better Golf and could we attempt to answer both questions in one episode off the Beaten Track it’s a big ask but what the heck so I need two things to make this video happen one the best golf course in kumria and two some golf Cubs with jumbo grips on them this is leaming house sat on lake zwater and has to be one of the nicest locations we have stopped off at during the series so far it’s time to get packed up and take the 30 minute drive to the Willie FY design Applebee Golf Club once described as the sunning Dale of the north which is High Praise indeed question is how will it fare on a wet Wednesday in the November [Music] Rain Fairways roll like a crumpled Duvy greens are more Square than round and are protected by bunkers runoffs and swailes and and uh electric fences in the distance Fells and Pikes emerge from the mands this is a stroll that not even the worst shot could possibly interrupt so we may have found one of the best courses in Cumbria and certainly found somewhere off the Beaten Track but what about jumbo grips are they really a thing can they help me can they help you or is this just another gimmick so after playing the first three holes I’m pretty confident that I’m going to find you somewhere off the Beaten Track that is going to be uh on your to-do list I’ve never heard of this place on until perhaps 2 months ago and uh it could be pretty special but we’ve got two things to do have a look at this golf course and of course jumbo grips I was sent a whole load of grips different types shapes and sizes by jumbo Max this is a Straight Tech ultra light straight meaning there’s very little taper at all it’s a medium siiz grip and it’s kind of the thinnest one if you like uh once you go into that jumbo grip category so I’m going to hit some balls in what I got Lewis to put on a 57 and a 9 iron so got a fair spread I’ll let plenty of shots round here and I’ll give you my thoughts on uh well whether or not these can help or hinder your game oh stayed straight it was actually a really nice strike I was aiming to try and bring that in a bit I probably was the right Club as well this is the fourth hole and a lovely par three plays downhill 175 and that was a five iron first go with the jumbo grips and I say that it stayed out there and maybe there’s a positive I can take from that because it was very much a straight ball flight what I was trying to do was turn the ball over a bit so there’s two ways of looking at that I struggled a little bit to turn the ball over but if you’re someone that hooks it and you’re a little bit risty then maybe that’s the whole purpose of what these trying to do so that’s an interesting one it’s got me uh yeah a little bit confused but there’s no doubt the strike was very good and a very straight ball flight that’s right down the middle happy with that I just want to get on to uh what I consider a slight negative that Springs to mind and that is I’ve just gone from it in a five iron I then hit a wedge and I’ve now got driver in hand the wedge and the driver had a standard grip on my normal setup and it’s really weird and odd to switch from one to the other it feels so so different so my issue is if you’re going to go jumbo grips having now just played a wedge in a driver I’m thinking you’ve got to be all in you’ve got to have every single club and I’m still not sure that no matter what happens with the test with the irons whether or not that’s something I could do or not so to answer the question which will inevit will be com in the comments section is these are mats which are used um in the UK to protect Fairways during the winter time but plenty going to ask me exactly what those are right so five iron jumbo grip I’ve pulled it down the left it’s actually long if anything um uh no great feedback on that one decent enough strike just a pull shot from me personally we’re about to play that hole down there which looks incredible in terms of the colors we can’t unfortunately see the tops of the mountains which is a real disappointment because we we’re literally surrounded by them I still think that side is the penines and if that cloud would lift then it would be a lot nicer to look at but the autumn colors are amazing and then if you look down this way then we’ve got uh but we’ got we’ve already seen one Lake Two Lakes the clubhouse is all way over and we make this kind of compl complete Loop all the way around it’s a fair old walk but it’s a uh certainly a spot to I don’t even know where all we’re on it’s certainly a spot to stop and smell the roses I’m going to play Five Iron not necessarily because uh it’s the right Club it’s a little bit because I don’t know where I’m going and secondly cuz we can hit another shot with a jumbo grip abely drill that and again very neutral straight ball flight right down the middle the thing I’m noticing and I I can’t remember this being a thing in the past is I’ve got these on a set of mauno pro 225s every ball I’ve hit so far um and they’ve all been five irons I better hit some short irons they’ve all been a fairly low ball flight so again um I I have a tendency to hit the ball very high with irons and that might be reducing that element of risk the gain so it’s just interesting the impact it’s having on on my own personal ball flight and uh ball flight characteristics but I will be definitely looking to do some dry ball dates with these in a separate video [Music] five iron off the tea was the correct Choice I’ve only got 80 90 yards in and it’s very narrow down here again it’s sort of long and thin green more Square than round round as I’ve said crap nearly it’s a half a shot and it was just a chance to try and play what was a nine iron got it a little bit thin so again can’t take a lot from that we’re going to have to have a full wedge and 9 in I’m afraid oh I come down here just to drop a ball and show you this uh this bank can run off that to be honest with you’re 90 yards away because of the light today I don’t even think You’ have picked it up and uh it is a shame we’re we’re filming in pretty poor light it’s also worth noting I’m filming off winter teas and some of the tea boxes um I’m looking for the next one right now are a lot more interesting obviously off the uh the proper full teas so it’s a shame to not be able to show you this place uh in all its glory for those interested uh today in the clubhouse I paid £40 to play 18 o it’s super dry under the for of got a fresh pair of footj on and uh the greens are firm so great condition but you’ve got some winter elements to contend with like mats and um you these kind of winter tea boxes and such like also worth noting it was cheaper for the booked online CU it was 35 quid and I got Charge 4 quid in the clubhouse which annoyed me a bit I have nine iron ready cuz I’m pretty sure that’s going to be the yardage you got left into this next hole um but one other thing that I think is a major issue for anybody who’s looking to promote uh jumbo grips in anyway is that you can’t try them there’s there’s nowhere to sort of try before you buy so you’ve got to fully commit and that means buying at least one stripping one of your clubs and putting it onto something so I think that’s an issue that I’m not sure how they resolve it but maybe there should be some demo clubs available uh made from Jumbo Max themselves putting across retailers because I don’t know is that not uh is that not an issue for everybody have you ever tried them and uh if you have how did you how did you manage it let me carry the bunker oh it carried the B got a bit of a wicked kick I’m going to try another ball as well cuz it is a 99 distance it was a slight pull I changed the swing slightly and uh I’ll tell you why in a minute or two we’ll see if we can get a slightly better shot than that one yeah that’s better that’s right at the flag yep right distance control so one of the things I found is that in recent videos you’ll notice I’ve been kind of working on this kind of wrist hinge uh setting very very early in the swing one of the things I’ve noticed with jumbo grips it’s kind of makes life a lot harder to hinge the wrists and that swing that I played then was uh was very different it was a bit more all arms if you like so again it’s a positive and negative depending on where you are with your own swing type if you are very risty and that’s causing you a problem to flick the wrist and all kinds of problems can happen then maybe that would eliminate that um because it’s certainly more difficult to get the wrists involved on the other hand like I said I’m trying to get the the wrist more engaged in that swing of mine at the moment and it’s proving to be just a little bit more of a challenge I don’t generally make a habit of showing the toilet facilities at or on a golf course but I’ve just come to the kind of halfway house and a little bit of a toilet break what I like about this is if uh you need some inspiration and there he is the great man himself take one look at that and you’re ready for the back nine you know I love a Ben and it’s time for a cheese and hamb baguette I’ve pinched half of hanners I said I didn’t want one and and uh it’s just a shame really the light isn’t great and um the sort of the fairways are like a crumpled duv I think I said is that you’re not quite picking that up in the light there one of those courses where there’s no such thing as a flat lie it’s got a lot of the kind of holwell vibe in terms of that and the Sheep as well [Music] that’s a great Zion should be spot on I think to be fair again it’s that neutral ball flight that really interests me and uh I just almost ready to to sort of quit the video in terms of the review of or my thoughts on these at least because I think I’m going to be a hard one to shift because whilst I’m okay with them I’m not really seeing anything that’s going to make me jump and switch so I don’t know I’m almost finished I think roll out a bit oh wow that would have been a nice birdie it was a super iron in and uh just to get over the top there you may notice a different putter that we’re going to be reviewing in uh in the next week or two which I’m sure you’ll all be interested in I was really interested in this house in a backdrop because it’s a tin roof I love the way it stands off all the uh the backdrop and we’ve probably got a few photographs but uh it’s a tin roof would you believe anyway back to the video one thing that you might have noticed and certainly picked up on the Drone is there is no Fairway bunkering whatsoever and I’m assuming that’s because this is some sort of grazing land there’s a lot of sheep on the land and uh it’s a little bit of a shame because if they were able to get some bunkering on the fairways this would Elevate this course to a real different level because once you get into the greens themselves the whole green complex the the sort of feeds into them the runoffs the swailes the bunkering and the quality of the green is absolutely exceptional um it’s just like I said it maybe a Pity I just wasn’t able to provide a little bit more definition by some uh with some bunking on the fairways but it’s uh it’s not criticism but it’s definitely noticeable I say the same thing after every shot it’s the straight ball flight that is without doubt a noticeable Factor so it’s a huge positive let’s not we can’t ignore that um maybe I’m being greedy want more than that but yeah it is definitely uh straightened the ball flight it might have just lost a little bit of um laun certainly with that 5i and I seem to have hid the ball very low and again I’m not sure drive all data is going to have to be uh gotten on track man and maybe a separate video uh later on this week if I can get time to do it comparing the three irons with uh same three irons but with standard grip on it’s either a soft seven or everything I’ve got with a nine it’s probably an eight iron but anyway let’s give it a go wind’s got to carry it a bit more I think that’s going to come up short yeah it is and I was right it was probably an 8 IR unfortunately we don’t have another straight ball flight but that’s me done I’m going to leave it there I’ve got to walk up 18 and uh I don’t want to finish off with an audience in the clubhous so we’ll we’ll quit now app be’s been a really interesting golf course and I would love to play here on on a summer’s day or a crisp winter morning and uh see a little bit more of the backdrop as well which is unfortunate we can’t show it you today but it’s been uh it’s been really enjoyable and as for leaming house what a stunning Hotel really nice and uh the location is everything the Lake District is such a a wonderful part of the UK and and uh you get a chance then make sure you visit that’s me done um all I’ve got left to say is we’re definitely going to take this one indoor onto track man and uh we’ll see where we go from there but this stage for me at least the jewelry’s out [Music] [Music] [Music] he e

Due to the onset of arthritis in both hands I decided to put jumbo grips on my clubs in a 3 week phased process, driver and fairway woods, wedges and then irons and putter. Yesterday was my first comp. fully jumbo gripped! I found that my driver and fairway wood play improved, my wedge play similar but my iron play was disappointing. Your description of the second 9 iron shot from the edge of the rough helped me understand my new swing need. The putter worked really well! Off to the Lakes this w/e, next stop Penrith and Windermere GCs.
The lakes are Britain's most beautiful place, add to this a Course like Appleby, heaven
Straight is great. Especially for wristy golfers like me. Agree that manufacturers have to wise up and add shafts with jumbo grips to the demo cart sets they send to pro shops. Just like they have now finally begun to include 7 woods and hopefully will add 9 woods and 11 woods.😊
Gorgeous scenery Andy. Calming for the soul
I have big hands and a lot of arthritis in thumbs and hand . Plaqued with tennis and golfers elbow on both arms and radial tunnel on my trail arm. These have made it so I can golf again. I like the medium st8 in the lite. My driver and 3 wood have the xl taper tour on them. The latter drops the swing weight. I actually like these grips and would not consider moving back to even a regular jumbo . Its whatever works for you.
I put them on all of my clubs and have used them for the past year and I’m not looking back. I do have large hands and wear a XXL glove. I also have arthritis. I love them!
I recommend viewing video of fitting a player for Jumbo Max grips. Packed with information about how Jumbo Max grips impact your swing. Have used oversize less taper grips for several years due to long fingers. Still fought over draw with irons and driver dispersion too large. As mentioned in the video, had to buy single Jumbo Max grips in order to try. Settled on the STR8 Medium Tour model for all clubs. Four rounds so far and very happy. Irons are consistently straight with occasional baby draw. Driver dispersion dramatically reduced with most recent round never missing a fairway. All irons are tending close to 10 yards longer. Have not noticed much change in ball flight height. Driver is the most surprising distance gain. Last round a drive came to rest at the edge of a creek never previously got within 30 yards of. I heard a game improvement tip that for me applies to the Jumbo Max grip change. Golf is easier when you try hard to not try hard. Never going back to smaller grips. Another one where mad scientist Bryson was right to question the status quo.
Thank u Andy another brilliant video with a beautiful depiction of the uk
I thought you did very well with the video. No lack of light and the beauty of the place is evident. I am 75 and never felt I had a good grip with my irons. I have tried all sorts of positions on my irons. Strong grip, weak grip and neutral grip. As I play, I always adjust my grip dependent on the golf shot: left, right or straight.
Therefore, I am interested in the jumbo grips. Only time will tell.
I really enjoyed the vidual besuty of this place. In photography, less bright light brings out the colors, which were beautiful! Thanks!😊

Andy B this week. I’ve been intrigued about fat grips as I get wrist pain but like you say there is no where to try them without committing to changing one of your clubs.
I had medium jumbos on for a few months and for the most part enjoyed them, although the swing weight of the clubs changed drastically. Another “issue” I discovered was when looking to purchase new clubs, especially via custom fit, as the demo clubs only come with standard grips on which feel like pencils compared to jumbomax and of course my swing has adapted to the jumbo grips whereby I couldn’t stop over-drawing normal grips, making the custom fit process somewhat redundant. As such I’ve gone back to standard gold pride jumbos – thicker than standards, but nowhere near the cricket bat grips of jumbomax. Seems a happy middle ground.
Andy, being a disabled golfer ( missing numerous fingers) I put regular grips on my clubs upside down (drill out the butt end of the grips) this gives me much better control.
Many golfers (full fingered) have tried the grips and like the feel.
There are certain companies that sell reverse taper grips so why not give those a try and see what you think, cheers Stumps.
Hannah D. I tried this on a driver a few years ago – liked it, but didn’t stick with it. Course looked amazing.
What a beautiful part of the Country.. I’m converting to jumbo grips due to increasing arthritis.. they’re proving a way to keep playing to a decent level👍
I switched to the golf pride jumbo mcc4 grips 2 years ago, they are a little bigger than midsize, but nowhere near as big as the jumbo max grips, absolutely love them, just put new ones on last week.⛳⛳⛳
Appleby is a great course, glad you took my advice when we met at Kirkby Lonsdale 😀🏌️♂️⛳️
It would help to know what your hand size is as a starting g point
I'd prefer not play golf than use those mats
For starters, there are 2 sizes smaller than medium. It takes no time to research that. There have been many YouTube videos about these and they are definitely not for everyone. Many I have seen show golfers trying to grip the Jumbomax as if it were a regular si,e and put it in the fingers. For me, I hold them more in my palms. Bryson has some good technique advice for these. Again for my personal experience, they help my arthritic hands to play with less pain and quicker recovery.
You are very correct when you say JumboMax has a marketing problem, since you cannot try the grips before you buy them. I played with them last year and played well but thought at one point they might be too big (I use the medium grip), changed back to a jumbo Golf Pride but then as this year went on I knew I had to go back to them. I regripped my clubs midway through the season and my handicap went from a 6 to a 3.5. The larger grip really controls the wrist rollover and the ball flight is much straighter, especially if you hook the ball. I also think you might pick up a little club head speed as I added about 10 to 15 yards to my drives. As you can tell this was a very expensive trial as each grip is about $17. I really think if JumboMax could figure out how to let golfers try them before they buy them their sales would go through the roof. Trying them on 3 clubs is not really a good test because you either go all in or you don't. I don't plan on ever going back to a normal grip anymore because the results speak for themselves and I do have a little arthritis in my hands and this has alleviated any pain I might have had before. Great product but you can't go halfway. I have tried to think how the could handle this but have come up with no ideas and obviously neither have they because I have never seen a fitting booth or anything like it to try them out. This is the first time I have ever left a comment on any video but I love your material and wanted to chime in with my experience.
I have returned to the game of golf and after a few ops on my neck, leaving me with not feeling in various fingers….my old CPX grips were causing soreness and an inability to hold the club properly….
Looked at Jumbo S ( small) Zen Light grips, I put ES ( extra small) Jumbo grip on all my irons and S (small) on my woods.
Complete game changer, no pain, swinging has got smoother and no loss of distance or feel.
Now regular golf has started and already dropped one shot after a competition.
Very early days but every time I hold a club, it feels spot and no pain issues…….
Hannah b
Get to the point man!
Glad I watched that for the jury's out.
Hannah C
Thanks — appreciate the video and the comments. It is tough to contemplate such a change without a chance to try 'em first but trial clubs don't exist so, as some did below, we're left with trying it on one club or just go all in!
Thank you for the video. It reminds us that it’s not just a game. It’s a journey. I am playing Jumbo max on all my irons, except for my wedges and my driver and I adapted to having no problems switching back-and-forth.
Switched all clubs to Jumbomax (medium) a few years ago. Would never go back.
This has been around along time used to put an extra wrap or two under a standard grip takes the wrist out of play
you need the jumbomax ultralite XS on, thank me later😁👍
I remember playing this course on a hot, cloudless Summer's day and getting roasted as I had no hat. When the sun was hot and the sky clear the landscape seemed very open. It looks very different this time of year
Hi Andy did you get through the ball okay with those grips I thought you would have a tendency to block a lot of shots to the right
I game Jumbo Max grips and love them.
I feel bad for uk golfers lol using a mat off the fairway cause it’s winter? What this course think they are? Augusta?
I have JumboMax on my clubs and I can’t wait to take them off…. It slows my club head speed
I switched to Jumbo Max STR8 grips large size and immediately saw increased improvements in my shots but not quiet there. I then went to medium JumboMax grips and finally ended up with X-tra Small which are still larger than most other brands over-sized grips. The Extra-Small JumboMax STR8 grips worked great. I have greater accuracy, control and my hands do not hurt after a long session at the driving range.
Hello Andy, Please know that although you find the low soft light is not your preference, it does bring out the rich lush green colors really well. Soft light brings out color saturation that is often lost in glare and color washout due to very bright lighting conditions. — I have gone for Lamkin Oversize grips on my hybrids, iron-woods, metal woods and wedges with only the Driver and Putter getting the Jumbo Grip treatment and it works very well for me. — Also noticed in the video, you kneeling next the bunker to hit your shot. Consider this, I have a left-handed Jack Nicholas – Golden Bear SW for just such occasions. It is a very easy solution and it comes in handy for many situations were the lie is good, but the room for a right-handed address just isn't there. — One big help I have found is to customize your club selection at the vehicle before heading out on the course. I have "Wind" clubs and I have "Calm" clubs. My bag always has a mix, but depending on conditions, I will edit out some clubs that are just not a high probability of getting used. Low, penetrating shots work well in the wind and during calm conditions it is a great advantage to come in high and drop the ball to get it to hold on the green. >>> I very much love the still photographs that you and Hannah post !!! <<< Soaking in the surrounding beauty of the landscape is a huge opportunity for enjoyment that some golfers are totally missing. It is good to see you and Hannah are taking it all in. Thanks for the great scenery and sharing your thoughts as well as your explorations in aspects of golf.
I'm using the same grips, it really helped me with the non taper with right hand pain and greatly improved my accuracy.
The "editing" in your videos is second to none. It alone is the reason that I started following you some years ago and the quality only gets better with time. I salute you and you're team Andy..
I’ve got a lot of time for your videos. Love the way they are filmed, love your style too. All the best
I went to Jumbomax about three years ago having developed Dupuytren's Contracture. (Curling Fingers) Having had the operation I went back to Golf Pride Jumbo. Within 2 weeks I have developed wrist and hand pain. Swapping back tomorrow. All you say is true about ball flight etc. but for me, my bad short is always a hook and my swing fault is to overswing. So Jumbomax helps both these. I use Extra lights on my Driver, 5 wood and hybrids (Medium Small) and the heavier 'Tour' on my irons. I also go down to and 'Extra Small' on my 60, SW and 50.
Hope this might help somebody.
One final note. I changed my own grips, BUT Jumbomax are much harder to take on and off with a grip remover. But you can do it, with plenty of solvent and persistence. 👍🏻
As someone in their 40s with wrist pain in one hand Im tempted to try them to take some pressure off the wrist turning twist during swing, its an experiment but may just help.
Just a quick comment – the fairway mat you used moved when struck by the club !
"Spurk " make wonderful fairway mats that I use which are superb for winter golf – they are available in short and long "grass " options and mine are still like new despite being used now for ages in serious winter conditions !
I also use them when practicing my wedges in my back garden !
Just a satisfied customer – no connection with the company !
They are amazing on drivers and wedges. Using their online sizing, medium, md, was recommended and purchased. Feeling like I may have been borderline, so I've since settled on their sj model…. something to consider.
I’ve been on a JumboMax journey lately. The website recommended the XL, but I was unable to turn the driver over. Like, no matter what I did I was blocking way right. I normally hook the ball. I had to go down two sizes to Medium, and now the driver is working well. Still tends to go right but I gained a lot of distance and feels less effort. For now, I think I’m settled on JumboMax for driver only. It’s not been too crazy switching back to Midsized MCC4 grips on the rest of my set.
9:23 To manage trying JumboMax without fully committing, I got a duplicate driver shaft on eBay for like $40 and had it fitted with jumbo grip. Easy enough to swap driver shafts for quick A/B testing. I also used a 5 and 9-iron from my old set of clubs as test mules. I think most golfers have a spare set laying around.
