Victor Dubisan is back and in brilliant fashion. After stepping away from professional golf at just 33, the enigmatic Frenchman has returned to competition and immediately made headlines by clinching a win on the Alps tour this past Sunday. Known for his flare, mystery, and raw talent, Dubisan’s comeback story is as captivating as his golf, the former Ryder Cup star, who played a pivotal role in Europe’s 2014 victory and captured two titles on the European tour, had seemingly closed a chapter on his playing career two years ago. He cited burnout and a desire for a different lifestyle as reasons for stepping away. Telling Bunkered in a 2023 interview, I was tired of it and wanted to have a different life. But while he disappeared from the spotlight to coach in Tenneref, running clinics for golfers of all skill levels at Abama Golf Resort, Dubis never fully ruled out a return. Maybe in a few years I’ll play a few events, he hinted at the time. Fast forward to 2025, and that time is now. At the Beritz Cup, a 54-hole event held at the prestigious golf de Biritz luf fair. Dubisan dazzled with rounds of 62, 65, and 61 before securing victory in a dramatic playoff against Spain’s Jorge Mike. It was his first competitive outing since the European Masters in September 2023. The winning moment came on the second hole of sudden death where Dubisan drained a birdie to clinch the title. Those putts are never easy, especially uphill ones, which I don’t particularly like, he admitted afterward. But once you hit a good putt, it’s out of your hands whether it drops or not. That last one was an excellent putt to finish with. In a classy and characteristic gesture, Dubisan declined to accept his €7,600 winner’s check from the 47,500 purse. As he was playing on a sponsor’s invitation, he passed the prize money to runner-up Mike ass, citing it as a gesture of personal principle. Whether this victory signals the start of full-fledged comeback is still unclear. Dubis, now 35, has remained non-committal about returning to life on tour full-time, a life he found mentally exhausting. “I was feeling good with my game, but I was just feeling bad with all the traveling,” he said last year. After 13 years, I was tired of it. I wanted to do something else. His close friend and fellow French pro Alexander Levy, who still competes on the DP World Tour, hinted at Dubisan’s possible return earlier this year, but acknowledged how difficult life on the road was for him. People only see the glamorous side of this life, Levy said. But there’s also the tough parts, the grind, the constant travel. I know Victor didn’t enjoy living out of a suitcase. It bothered him from the very beginning. One thing is certain, Dubisan’s raw talent hasn’t faded. Whether this is a one-off triumph or the start of second act, golf fans will be watching closely.
