Sue Hord, co-founder of Palm Valley Golf Course, passed away at age 79.The Schonfeld father-son team won their eighth FSGA Parent-Child Championship.Area golf organizations awarded scholarships to 14 junior golfers.
Sue Hord loved landscaping and loved people. Those went together with making the Palm Valley Golf Course the family-friendly, nine-hole gem tucked away in Northern St. Johns County that she and her husband Jack built in 1989 and kept going despite the rapid growth around them.
Mrs. Hord, 79, passed away on July 30 of cancer, in the same small home on the golf course property where her husband died in 2014.
“She had been in assisted living but we brought her home and she got to see the golf course one more time,” said her son Chris Hord. “She loved being out here and loved taking care of the landscaping. What she loved more than anything were the people who came to Palm Valley. She and my father built something they thought was in need in this area, an affordable, laid-back place where you could bring your wife or your children and not feel pressured to play.”
Kim Lawlor, the Palm Valley general manager and director of golf, called Mrs. Hord “an amazing, hard-working woman.”
“She brought the beauty to Palm Valley, adding crepe myrtles and azaleas yearly,” Lawlor said. “She loved to take care of the flowerbeds. She leaves behind a legacy in a family-friendly, affordable golf course right in the middle of Nocatee.”
Palm Valley remains the oldest continuously-operating nine-hole course on the First Coast.
Mrs. Hord is a native of Springfield, Mass. In addition to her son Chris, she is survived by a daughter, Julie Hord of Durango, Colo., a brother, Richard Brouillard and a sister, Elaine “Bobbi” Brouillard, who both live in Kansas City, Mo.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Aug. 14 at the Palm Valley Golf Club, beginning at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome.
