Hello there everyone and welcome back to the channel and back to the indoor performance center here at Howley Hall Golf Club in Leeds. My name is Ryan Rasl PJ professional here and equipment expert for golfshake.com. As you can see, we have some of the brand new Mazuno Pro S1 irons to take a look at today. We’ve not had a look at much Mazuno stuff over the past couple of years, but now we’re starting to get sent some uh media samples to do some testing with. So, you’ll find a few videos now hitting the channel with different models of iron. We’ve also got some wedges and putters coming up very soon as well. But I wanted to start with the S1. I absolutely love the look of these. Like I say, it’s a while since I’ve hit a Mizuno iron, and what better one to start it on. So, let’s see exactly what Mizuno say about these beautiful irons. So, the S1 are pure muscle bats designed for players who demand ultimate precision and workability. At the core of the S1 is Mazuno’s grain flow forge HD process carefully executed in Hashima, Japan. Forged from a single billet of 1025E pure select mild carbon steel, the S1 delivers the unmistakably soft and responsive feel through impact that Mizuno is globally known for. The inclusion of a copper underlay further optimizes this experience, subtly refining vibration patterns to produce the purest, most satisfying feedback. That’s something that we really associate with Mizuno. It’s all about that feel and generally that really really soft feel that we’re going to get with these irons. These are developed and tested with the input from Mizuno’s tour players and the S1 incorporates this channel back design that redistributes mass for greater vertical stability and more consistent center of gravity. This design works seamlessly with Mizuno’s harmonic impact technology, which fine-tunes the feel by adjusting the club vibration frequencies to deliver even more responsive feedback. So even on an iron like this which is a solid construction are really thinking about how that feels to the player how responsive this can be and also how forgiving they can make this by fine-tuning the shape of the iron putting massive different direction and also coming out with a package that looks as good as this. So I’m going to take these out to the golf course. We’re going to hit some shots with them. Uh I can’t wait to do that actually cuz things look absolutely beautiful. I’m going to give you some feedback as I’m hitting them as well as to what I feel and I think when I’m testing these ir here uh and got some numbers with I’ve got a 57 and 9 iron as part of this set. So I’m going to talk about those uh towards the end of the video but for now let’s get outside big steer test. So seamlessly cut to a few days later and I’ve now been able to get out with the S1 irons on the golf course here at Howley Hall. I’m going to play some of the holes on the back nine. I’m going to tell you exactly what I think when I’m using these. I’ve got five, seven, and nine, remember, in this set. So, we’re going to play few different shots from few different positions out here on the back nine and tell you exactly what we think. For those of you that regularly watch the channel, I’m also testing the Pro S3 at the same time. So, you can have a look at that video and have a bit of a look there. I’m not going to compare them today, but you can have a look at both videos and see which one works out the best. But, for now, let’s go hit some. So, we’re on the 12th hole here at Ali Hall. Uh, I’ve got the S1 five iron in my hand. Now, it’s short four. I’m just going to hit it towards the pond there and leave myself hopefully a 9 because that’s the only other club I’ve got to hit to this green unless it’s a seven. I really don’t. But, um, yeah, I mean, those of you that are watching all the videos on the channel, particularly the two one you’ll see coming on are that I testing the S3 and S1 at the same time. So, some of the shots look quite similar. I’m not really going to do a comparison of one against the other because I feel that each of these irons deserves their own kind of review video really, but I’ll tell you exactly what I think as I did it all the way through. But the S1 certainly very very sleek, thin top line. Love the shape of it. It’s just got that layer shape that all of you will absolutely love the look of. So that’s we can hit one down the fairway here. really good off the face. Wow. Yeah. Good. Felt absolutely fantastic. Really nice. And not I was going to say soft, but it doesn’t feel as soft as a lot of Mazuno irons I’ve used here in the past. Actually feels like there’s a bit more feedback for me. I don’t really like really soft feeling irons. Um, so this, you know, feels like an iron that I I would kind of like it if you the sort of um audible kind of feedback you get is not that really buttery softness. The feeling the hand isn’t that real buttery softness. It feels like there’s a bit of kind of crunch off the face when you hit it and a bit more kind of I don’t know, it’s a bit more similar to the irons that I’d use at the moment. is the ones I have in the bag at the minute because I just love the feel of them are uh some Nike VR Forged and I absolutely love those and uh these feel quite similar. Just managed to cling on to the left hand side of the fairway here on 12 left off down probably a bit longer than I wanted. It’s definitely not seven iron but it’s going to be a hell of a good nine to get all the way to that flag with probably 165ish maybe a few yards more to the center of the green ping a little bit frontish. hoping 160ish. So, that’s still a hell of a good nine iron for me. I’m not sure I can get it all the way up there, but we’ll hit it and see. Anyway, I mean, in terms of looks, really nice. Um, more rounded in the toe. Quite a traditional look to this iron. Um, I I just love everything about the S1. Whichever way you look at it, it just looks fantastic. I love this little um addition in here where it’s just been kind of sculpted out the back of the iron there. We’ve got um KBS Tour C tapers in here, 130X, which is not a shaft I’ve really applied that much, but done the few shots that I hit inside and out here. So far, feels very good. Right, let’s see if we can get it onto that green. Might not get all the way there about as good as I can hit it. You’ll see it come just short of the green, but it’s gone a decent distance actually. I tried to hit that quite hard. Didn’t get there, but yeah. Um, felt lovely off the face. The kind of feedback was really, really nice. So, we can see our shot there from the fairway. Hasn’t quite got to the green. I didn’t think it had. It’s pitched just here. Probably two, three paces short of the putting surface. Just rolled out to here. But to be honest, I’m still pretty impressed. I mean, that’s very good from the sort of distance we were hitting it from there. Around the 165 mark with a 9 iron is certainly well above where I’d normally hit it. I’m about a 150 with a 9 iron if I hit a good one. So, yeah, I mean, from here, we’re pretty happy with where we finished up, particularly when, you know, I didn’t think we’d get anywhere near the green there, but yeah, very, very happy with that. So, our T-shot on 13, middle of the fairway. Where else did you expect it to be? I certainly didn’t expect it to be here, but yeah, those of you who watch the videos regularly know that I missed quite a lot of fairway, but we’ve got a shot now. Again, we’re right on the limit with this seven eye around 185 here into this green. It’s just over the corner of the tree. So, I’m going to have to hit a really good one. Get it nice and high up over there as well. The pin is kind of middle of the green. So, you know, I’m hoping that kind of helps me a little bit. There’s a bit of room. Sure, that if it does land there, it will probably run up. So, let’s hope that we can get this ball up over the trees quite easily and get it to come down and land somewhere on that green. God, I’ve hit it. God, did it pull there? That has gone over the green. Over the green. I mean, I did rip it. I did hit it very, very good. I’ve just turned it over a little bit, which is probably added a few yards, but like I said before, from an iron, you’d expect not to really go particularly far. I mean, I’ve absolutely nailed that. Thought I was going to be in a bit of trouble with this one. Uh because it looked like it had pitched absolutely by all fat, but it actually just pitch in the top of the bunker here and had a ram back down in there. So it kind of been saved a bit by the bunker. Another fluff that way and could have shot another 20 yards down there. We’ have had a very, very difficult shot. I mean, this one’s not easy off the down slope. We’re playing onto a down slope. It’s a very quick green. So see if we can get it on there. Hopefully fill it up and down. Not bad. Well, so quick going down that hill there. Just gone up the other side of the green, but I’ve got about a 8ft put for my birdie. So, let’s see if we can hold that. If not, we’re going to make a par. But yeah, still impressed with how far that shot’s gone from the fairway. And to be honest, the the same with the five irons that we hit and the nine irons we hit on the last hole. And whilst you wouldn’t associate either of the um irons that I’m using out here today, so the S1 and the S3 um with distance, they’re going a pretty decent distance. What they are? We’ll have a look at the Trackland numbers we gathered later. But yeah, certainly this S1 iron that I hit that’s finished here, it just came off the face so fast and certainly not something I’d associate with a Mazuno iron generally. Um that kind of excessive ball speed. That that’s as far as I’ll hit any seven iron. Um really when we’re testing I mean we sometimes when you absolutely throw yourself at one in the performance center on the track man you might get 200 yards out of a 7 iron in one of the really cranked low lofted sort of sets that you see now. But certainly for a standard or 34 degree traditional 7 iron to go up to you know 180 185 it’s actually carried further than that from where we are. Yes, I know I pulled it a little bit, but still that distance was very impressive. So, we can see our bunker shots just ran down this slope and off the green. Not the easiest of ps, but we probably got about 10 ft between me and the flag here. See if we can make our birdie. If not, it should be a nice safe park. Nice. So, yeah, nice birdie there. Obviously a fairly fortunate one with pulling a P but yeah um I am very very impressed the distance is particularly very very good. So we’re on the par 340 here at Howley Hall 173 from the back of the tea there which probably would be a seven iron normally but I’m feeling strong today. I’ve got nine iron. We’re a little bit further forward on the T. Obviously, we’re right at the front of the T- box here. And if you can see that red flag means it’s towards the front of the green. So, it’s not playing its full 173. And judging by the shots that I hit a couple of holes ago, it should get most of the way there really. Now, let’s try and have a nice guy. I am a bit you know what I think that’s got there again. Um for me that was a lovely strike nearly my eyebrow. Wind’s just coming off the right a little bit. So, I had to out a little further right. But certainly the feel off the fakes again is I can’t express to you enough how different this feel to many Mazuno irons that I’ve used in the past and in a good way. I I’ve not really been a fan over the years of overly soft feeling irons. I don’t really like them. I don’t feel like I get much feedback off them. And certainly these are absolutely crammed with feedback. They feel lovely and I can only think that’s down to the way that they’re constructed obviously with the different layers and the forging process and stuff but yeah these are very very good just finished on the front of the green. So again more than happy with that obviously didn’t really think I thought it’d be a really good one to get here anyway. 160ish to the to the flag but but yeah I mean the feel again very very good. I’m just so impressed with how far these go. my god race that fast of it. But yeah, I mean, you know, they’re not renowned for being distance irons. They’re traditional lofted, but I just they just feel like something that’s got a little bit more oomph in there when you hit it, to be honest. And I wasn’t expecting that when I came on here and tested them today. But I’m very impressed with all the shots that I’ve hit with this iron so far um out here today. And yeah, very, very good. And I love the looks of them, the feel of them, the finish is great. There’s just nothing not to like really So just hear 79 here from 175 downhill but quite into quite a decent breeze to be honest and yeah again really easily gone through the wind landed all the way there. Nice penetrating flight just feels really good. Um, the S1 I was expecting to be that kind of classic blade that just pops it, you know, straight up in the air really easily because it’s got loads of loft on, be a bit more kind of maneuverable if you wanted to be. And it it definitely is. And you can knock the shots down if you want to as well. But I think from that sort of standard lie, standard swing and sort of normal shot that you hit, I’m just so impressed with the distance that comes off these, they feel amazing. And do you know what? I’ve hit a couple of dodgy strikes, a couple of good strikes, and I thought the forgiveness is pretty good as well. I mean, that being said, they’re not for everybody. You know, you’re not going to get a, you know, a high handicapped golfer being able to use these consistently and and score well. You’re going to need that little bit more help. I think these could suit anyone up to a kind of mid- handicap, really, sort of 12, 15 handicap. I think you could hit these. Okay. Obviously, we’d want you to go and get fitted and try every single connotation that Mizuno have. And there’s lots of other irons in the range that that might suit you better. You might get a little bit more forgiveness or, you know, you might hit slightly better dispersion with another iron. But these should definitely be in the mix and you shouldn’t just discount them because they’re uh better players, kind of less forgiving iron. They’re certainly an option that might suit a hell of a lot of golfers to be honest. And I really wasn’t expecting that at the start of the video. We’re going to head over now, have a bit of a look at the numbers that we collected when we were in the performance center and talk through that a little bit as well. So, let’s have a look at these all important numbers with Mizuno Pro S1. Now, you know, like like you’ve seen the video, 57 and N IR that we’ve got in here. And, you know, if we’re looking at the numbers, I would say they’re kind of nine iron’s a bit longer than I would hit mine. Seven iron’s pretty similar. five irons a couple of yards longer maybe, but very very similar sort of yardages to what I’m seeing with mine. Certainly out on the golf course, they seem to go a little further than what I’ve seen on the Trackman here, but you know, numbers wise kind of where we want them. Um, you know, in terms of the spin and launches and things like that, pretty good. Five irons, maybe a bit higher spin than I would normally get with with a five iron, but still the distance, the carry, and total is is up there and fairly similar really. Um, ball speed’s good. I mean, there’s not much really I can say. You know, there there are great looking golf clubs. They’re not designed to go miles, but like we saw out on the golf course, the the distances are very good. And I I think the the sort of control that I got, particularly outside when testing them was very very impressive. And and you know, these numbers are only really relevant to me and and obviously the speed that I swing it and how far I would normally hit a n iron. But for me, if a n iron goes 150, that’s a pretty good strike. It’d be about 145 to 150 generally when I’m hitting 9 iron. And we’re seeing that these are on average slightly longer than that, which is great. 7 iron, I always sort of club myself at between 175 and 180. 180 is generally a good one. And we can see that that’s kind of where the total distance is there. And five iron, I always kind of go 200 to 205, which is which is where we’re seeing that. So, kind of fits in with what I would expect. What I would say with these is I thought the feel was exceptional. Certainly better than I was expecting them to feel and maybe not better, but kind of more like I like irons to feel really. They they weren’t as soft as some of the Mazunos I’ve tried in the past, which for me is is a huge positive. I think that they feel as good as anything that I’ve tried from Mizuno before. And yeah, performance-wise, very, very good as well. So, hopefully you’ve enjoyed that review. We’ve been outside, we’ve been in here, and we’ve also chatted a bit about all the technology that these irons have got to offer. But let us know what you think. Do you like the look of these? Do you have previous models of Mizuno iron that you’re kind of thinking of switching into? We want to know that as well. Obviously, we recommend that you go and get properly fitted by, you know, a a trained club fitter. Um, if you’re looking at changing golf clubs, but yeah, let us know what you think. Drop some comments in that comment section below and we’ll see you all very soon.
