Former champion Webb Simpson met the media after his final round at the 2025 Wyndham Championship—his favorite stop at Sedgefield CC—sharing insights on his own game and why Cameron Young’s runaway performance could shape the next Ryder Cup team.
Key takeaways
Momentum building: Four straight cuts and improved ball-striking since the CJ CUP have Simpson optimistic for the fall swing.
Course conditions: Calls this week’s rough “the most penal” he’s seen at Sedgefield, making Cameron Young’s projected 24-under total even more impressive.
Cam Young praise: Simpson recalls early practice rounds with Young, credits his length and improved putting (Top-10 this season) and predicts a decade-long impact on the PGA TOUR.
Local standouts: Applauds fellow North Carolinian Ben Griffin for “keeping the hammer down” during a breakout year.
Message for Captain Keegan: Says Young’s near-10-shot win adds another “hard-to-say-no” name for the U.S. Ryder Cup roster.

Aren’t you the all-time leading money winner here? John, what’s up, buddy? Aren’t you the all-time leading money winner here? I think so. Um, talk about your play and, uh, how you how you felt this week. Um, yeah, I don’t really have anything to base it off of cuz I feel like I’ve been strung together four made cuts, but nothing on the weekend. And, um, you know, always feel different here. I feel like I can always, you know, play better here than anywhere else. Uh, but I’ve been building some momentum since CJ Cup in Dallas and Paulie worked with me last week in Minnesota. Ball striking’s getting better. Um, I puted great until today and today I was a little off, but overall my game’s in a much better place than it was at the start of the year. So, I’m hopeful this fall I can keep building on it. And it looks like another Wake Forest guy is going to win his first tournament here. A little similar to when you won here. Yeah, I’m excited for him. He’s blitzing everybody. I mean, 2400 apart at this point is crazy considering this is probably the most penal rough at Sville I’ve ever seen. So, um and and I mean these greens are so fast. Making putts is so hard. So, it’s just even more impressive that he’s winning by that many. Well, Ben Ben Griffin’s closing in on another top 10, 15, whatever. Just sort of watching from afar to see a guy from from our area play with sort of the consistency he’s played with this summer. What have you sort of been your impressions? Um man, he’s had a killer year and I mean he’s he’s done it not just a couple weeks but really the entire season and um you know he’s confident, he’s aggressive. It it’s really nice to see. Um it’s fun to watch being out here for a long time seeing guys kind of have a breakout year and then kind of keep the hammer down which is seems like what he’s doing. I remember 2011 I was having a great year and Ernie Ell told me that same thing at Cog Hill. the the BMW championship and keep the hammer down, keep the pedal down. Um, and it sounds like he’s doing that. Do you have any good Cam Young stories for us? Stories? Yeah. Um, do you remember when you first met him? Yeah. Help. I mean, we were playing most practice rounds together in every major when he when he first came out. And I was trying to help him as much as I could. I never played a practice round with him here, so I didn’t give him any advice, but it doesn’t doesn’t sound like he needs it. Uh, but man, I’m so happy for him because, you know, assuming he gets the job done, he’s one of those players, he’s unique in the sense everyone knew how good he was. You know, there’s plenty of guys who we think are good enough to win, but you’re still not sure until you do it. He was a little different knowing like we knew everyone knew how good he was. I mean, he’s already played a President’s Cup. You know, he almost made a Ryder Cup uh in Rome. And, you know, I think he has a very high ceiling. He’s long. Um, now he’s 10th in putting this year. So, I think this will be one of those situations where assuming he wins today, he’ll he’ll be a guy we’re talking about for 10 or 15 years. What do you think held him back seven runner ups? It’s a lot. Yeah, I mean, winning out here is hard. I mean, I don’t know exactly what it was, but um I think anytime you’re trying to win, you know, you’re dealing with other guys who can shoot 65 and beat you. I don’t recall many tournaments where he kind of gave it away. Um but he’s handling the pressure well right now. Did great yesterday. And um again, I think it happened for me where once I won here, I felt way more comfortable in contention the next time, which was two weeks later. And so I’m I’m sure he’ll be in contention here in the playoffs. What are you going to go back and tell Keegan, man? I mean, Cam’s a New Yorker. I know he he he loves that golf course. Anytime you’re you’re about to win by 10, you got to talk about him. Um, and he certainly has the the right game for that golf course. So, he’s just adding his his name to a list of many guys that are hard for us to say no to. Cool. Thanks. Thanks.
