Veteran Chris Kirk shared his reactions after a composed final-round performance at the 2025 Wyndham Championship, becoming the only player to vault inside the FedExCup Playoffs cut line with solid ball-striking and timely par saves.
Key takeaways
Balanced play: Kirk opened with one of his best ball-striking days in years, then hung tough with crucial par saves down the stretch.
Pressure cooker: Admitted to extra nerves in the final group, he stayed present, avoided thinking ahead, and executed when it mattered.
Season turnaround: After sliding to 130th in the FedExCup and questioning his schedule, Kirk credits new putting coach Tim Overton for reviving his confidence.
Family inspiration: Watching his son compete freely in junior tournaments reminded him to play with the same fearless mindset.
Looking ahead: Kirk plans a short rest, first-day-of-school drive for his kids, then heads to Memphis for the next FedExCup event—aiming to climb even higher.

All right, Chris, spirited spirited week. Only player to move inside the top 70. What um kind of got you there, would you say? Just solid play all around. You know, the the first day was, you know, one of the best ball striking days I’ve had in a long time. Didn’t make a whole lot of putts and then uh made some nice ones round two and three and and uh just kind of hung in there today. and I didn’t feel like my golf swing was at its best today, but um you know, made some really great par saves when I needed to and and uh made some really really good swings on the the last handful of holes when I when I needed it. So, would have liked to have gotten a few more coming in, but um you know, happy with how I played. Did you feel the pressure at all these two this weekend? Absolutely. Yeah, I was I was significantly more nervous today than I would have been, you know, in that same situation next to last group. Um was a lot more nervous than I than I normally would have been. you know, it’s kind of was I knew I was in a great position to to have a good week and and move on to next week, but um there’s the pressure of that and then also trying to, you know, not trying to think forward too much, but trying to get yourself in position to to possibly make it to the to the BMW. So, um didn’t quite get as many many points as I would have liked, but uh you know, overall very happy with with my game. Overall, you were 130 on the FedEx Cup after missing the cut at the memorial. I saw you said in the presser you weren’t even sure if you wanted to go play at the US Open. What how far along are you compared to where you were two months ago? Yeah, it’s just that’s just golf in a nutshell right there. You know, it I I I think I knew that nothing was like so far off, but I just felt kind of hopeless. My my putting felt terrible and my swing just felt kind of mediocre. And so, you know, there was a there was a minute there where I was just like, man, you I’ve played a few events at Oakmont. Was like, do I really want to put myself through that right now with with how my game feels? But, um, thankfully, I went and and uh uh started working with Tim Yelbertton that week on my on my putting and and, uh, it’s really made a big difference. And I saw you posted on Instagram your son played his first um like tournament months ago. What’s it like as a dad watching your son play a tournament compared to I guess how you feel in a tournament? Um it’s exciting. You know, I told him uh I told him that uh we were playing the other day and and was like, you know, I think that I should have more confidence in myself when I play. He’s like, “Why is that, Dad?” I was like, “When I watch you standing over the ball, I feel like you’re about to hit a great shot every time. You don’t every time, but I think that you’re going to.” So to try to apply a little bit of that to my game, I think um watching him play and the way that he plays, the freedom that he plays with is is something that’s been very refreshing for me because it’s not it’s not easy to play that way out here when you’re you know there’s so much on the line. Um but that’s definitely the best way to play. So it’s it’s been great. And lastly, um what are you most looking forward to about next week in Memphis? I know you played that course a bunch just going trying to attack and now move into the top 50. Yeah, for sure. I mean, I’m mostly mostly looking forward to taking my kids the first day of school tomorrow. So, I got to go. I’ve got a 4 and a half hour drive home ahead of me tonight. So, um and then yeah, I’ll probably go to Memphis Tuesday evening or something like that. Um I need the rest more than I need the reps right now. So, um but yeah, a golf course that I’m that I really really like. Um and uh so I’m I’m excited to see it. Awesome. Thank you, Chris. Yeah, thanks.
