Now, it is clear to see that Ping have very much a cult following when it comes to you guys, the golfers. Now, today we’re going to be looking at the new Ping I240 Iron. This is the next generation on from the i230 and the I210. So, I thought I’d bring those along as well to have a little look to see if we’re seeing any improvement from this particular iron from its previous generations. Now, I’ve got some tech that I want to talk to you about, which Ping have given it to me, and we’re going to put these up as a head-to-head to see which one comes out on top. Now, I’ve got to say, having tested golf equipment for the past probably 10 years and then reviewing them, I’m seeing companies kind of move around in circles when it comes to the technology that’s involved with all their new releases. And what I mean by that is that I feel like we’re going around in cycles when it comes to the release of the new equipment. the marketing departments of these companies using really interesting words to kind of talk about the different areas of technology that actually if you really dive down into it, it’s almost like we’re just using different words but meaning the kind of same thing like buttery feel or super soft feel or premium feel. What does that actually mean? Does it mean that they’re creating different feels from different generations because they’ve had feedback from tour, which is kind of what they say, but are we actually getting that? And I’m going to have a little look closer at this i240 because there’s a lot of similarities in the i210 and the i230 that I know players like Lee Westwood, like Victor Hovland have used previous generations, but I’m not seeing them move into the next generation. Now, from a testing point of view in today’s video, we’re going to be focused on seven irons. I got seven irons in all the three different heads. So, we’re going to get some numbers of them for you. Now, Ping have offered and have done over the years offered a different options when it comes to their lofts. And the technical term that Ping use are retro, standard, and power lofts. And you can have that fit depending on what you need for your game. Now, first impressions when I look at the i240 is it’s very ping. It looks very, very similar to previous generations. Certainly closer to looking at the i210, and I’ll get into that in just a moment. But when we look at this particular setup, we’re seeing a little bit more of the detail maybe being a little bit more exposed in the back. On the previous generation of the 230, we were seeing maybe a little bit of a cover up. So, you weren’t seeing any of the technology kind of in the back. Well, Ping focusing on exposing that to showcase their story to you. And they’re talking about forgiveness with feel. In previous generations, they may have looked at premium feel or butter feel. Well, now they’re going with forgiveness with that feel. meaning in my mind that they’re giving me the feel that we’re looking for from a premium club like this one, but also the forgiveness and that will go again more into the technology. So, Ping giving us a lighter back badge at the back of this club, which means that they’re going a little bit lighter here, which means that they can move that weight a little bit more around the club head, giving us that forgiveness, giving us that higher MOI. Again, we’ve heard that from previous generations. We hear that year on year. It feels like anyway lowering the CG, getting it lower down that point at the bottom there, which allows us to enable us to launch that ball quite easily up into the air. And I’ve got to say from the shots that I’ve just been hitting with this particular Let’s see if we can get one on target this time, it does feel really easy to get it up in the air. And we’re getting that little bit of elastima inside the head as well, which means it’s going to give us that softer, buttery feel that we all kind of look for when it comes to a premium set of irons like this one. Now, when it comes to the actual sole of the club itself, it’s been designed with a little bit more roundness on it. Again, they’re seeing this in previous generations. So, what they’re saying is that the perfect turf interaction is going to come from having this sole with a little bit of a camber on it. It’s also going to help with that bounce on the back which is going to get that club into the ground and out of the ground quickly giving us that launch that we’re looking for. Now, when it comes to that, I can assure you that when the testing that I’ve done with these particular clubs and all the clubs is you’ve got to have a really firm surface to hit from to really get the notice of that. You’re not going to notice it off a mat and you’re certainly not going to notice it in the winter months where you get soft ground conditions. Now, I’ve talked about this club as being a kind of premium players look. Well, they get feedback from their tour players to see what they want from their irons. Now, this one being a cavity back, which means that we’ve got that kind of wedge taken out the back and then scattered around the edge of the club to give it that MOI, give it that forgiveness, but you’re getting a thin top line and you’re getting a short blade length. Again, this enables a player to be able to kind of dial in a little bit easier and be able to control the shot shaping. But the big thing, the big difference in this i240, which you notice straight away when you pull it out of the box, is the actual groove structure themselves. We got a real difference now from 230 into now the 240. Now, picking up the i230 and the i240, it’s really clear, and hopefully you can see this, that the groove structure in both of these irons are very, very different. The talking point in the i230 was all about the micro max grooves, focusing on grooves that were very similar to what they used in their wedges being absolutely tiny. The kind of gaps between them, saying that they’re going to get more spin, more control, certainly from those kind of wet kind of semi- rough conditions. You’ve got hydro pearl finish on both of these. Hydropear meaning that they’re enabling them to be able to pull that water off the club face to stop us getting those low spin flyers in those wet conditions. But what a difference that we’re seeing here. Going from a very very small groove and lots of them to now what they call a to proven groove which is going to give us maximum control from fairway strikes. This is where the confusion comes for me because ultimately when you look at the i210 which is the previous generation from the i230 we’ve gone back to these grooves again which it certainly looks like that to me anyway. still got that hydrop pearl finish, but we’re moving back into this groove structure which is what they’re calling to tour proven, which is why I’ve said that I feel like we’ve kind of gone round in a big circle. Now, if you take someone like Victor Hovindland, now Victor Hovland being a player that did go into the i230 as a test from the i210, he’s gone back into the i210. Now, I have no idea why that would be the case, but certainly when you look down at this particular club, it gives me that sense. This is the i230. It gives me that sense that I’ve got loads of grooves there. Therefore, I’m probably going to get lots and lots of spin from this particular club. And someone like Victor, who may be maybe a high spin player, he may not have liked what the sort of results he was getting from this particular model. I don’t know, and I’d need to ask him, which I don’t have his direct number, so I can’t do that. However, we’re going to look at some of the numbers that I’m getting from these clubs and see which one is performing. Well, let’s see how well all of them are performing. Well, I’ve got to say the numbers are actually quite interesting. And the reason I say that is because these clubs are actually from a loft point of view very much the same. 33° of loft that I’m getting out of all three of these seven irons. Now, starting off with ball speed, the i210 giving me 115.6 6 mph off the club face compared to the i230 at 116.7 and then the i240 giving me 116.3. So not a great deal of difference between the three of those. The i230 maybe getting out there just a little bit stronger but that is so dependent on my strike in here today. Then we look at the launch getting 18.8 compared to 18.6 and 19.1. So really nothing in that from a launch point of view. If we head over to spin numbers though, the i210 coming out at an average of 6,44 revs if you compare that to the i230 at 66 and then the i240 at 66. So, I did say that I thought that maybe the i230 would spin a little bit more. Well, it does spin a fraction more than I’m getting out of the i210, which might explain why Victor Hovin maybe has moved back into that i210. However, we talked about that spin number um maybe being a to proven spin number when it comes to the grooves and actually that spin number being almost identical in the i240 compared to the i230. So, whatever they’ve done there, they’ve been able to, I don’t know, get the same number from less grooves than we’re seeing out of that i230. Be interesting to see what that did when we got in those wet, rough conditions. Were we getting a little bit less spin or was that I230 being able to maintain that spin? We’d have to do more testing later on. If we look at the actual peak heights, 32, 32, and 33. So, nothing in it. And then when we look at the average carry yardages, again, the numbers are pretty much the same. 162 yards out of that I210 compared to 163 yards out of the i230 and 162 yards out of the i240. So, all in all, there’s not a great deal of difference in it from all three irons. And actually, when I set them up down by the ball, I’m again not seeing a great deal of difference. There is some differences. And probably my eyes are drawn more to the different groove structure in the i230 over the i240 and i210. But from a visual point of view, I would say if anything, the i240 maybe just looking a little bit sleeker in its profile. Maybe on the inside part there, maybe it’s blended in just a little bit more and the offset maybe not as evident in the i240 compared to, let’s say, the i210. But all in all, actually these irons from a shape and size point of view, actually very similar. And I actually think for lots of players out there that maybe have missed a generation, maybe you’re in the i210, then I think it’s going to be a natural progression to go into the i240. Certainly a test anyway because they’re very, very similar in their profile. And all in all, we’re just getting a little bit more spin. And that extra little bit of spin that I’m seeing is definitely going to give me more control when I get out into the golf course. And you want as much spin as you can get really to a certain point if you’re only spinning up and beyond 7,000 revs with the 7 iron. But if you can get it in and around that sort of 6 1/2 to 7,000, I think you can really hit your number really quite easily and get that control from front to back. But I’d be interested to hear what you guys think about this. Are we seeing a big shift when it comes to the i240? I’m certainly not seeing a great deal when it comes to the looks, the feel point of view. Actually, again, very similar. But all in all, Ping making once again another fantastic iron with their i240. Down in the comments, will you be testing out the i240 by Ping? Don’t forget, if you are new to the channel, hit that subscribe button and I’ll see you again on the next video.

Good review & agree the design circle seems to have gone back on itself!
Great review Dan, thanks. If I owned the Ping i210 or i230, I don't think I'd be running out to buy the i240. I don't think the i240 provides a meaningful performance advantage and, for me, I prefer the appearance of the i210.
So nothing gained over three generations!
Good review…so basically Ping have made the same club 3 times…makes a good secondhand set of i 210's look like a good buy
Good interesting review Dan. It definitely appears to be the case amongst most, if not all, manufacturers that the gains with each new model aren’t really significant. Perhaps the changes are significant to the top tour players. Got to say though that I am a Ping convert, but sadly I’m not good enough for the i range. I do love my g440’s. 👌🫡
Amazing how similar they all are to each other! Great review, Dan! Thanks for sharing
I guess we are seeing that clubs aren't changing that much. Companies are just making new releases for the sake of it and the biggest difference is the marketing!
I was a Ping user for 30 plus years my last ping were the i210’s with Glide2.0/Eye wedges I had a fitting for i230’s but, truthfully, they did nothing for me! I ended up with the amazing forged Orka RS10CB irons and OD wedges! No intention of changing but if I did, the i240’s could do it!
Yeah great review Dan but as you say there’s not a lot of difference between the 3 clubs,it just seems that manufacturers just keep banging out clubs for the sake of it.
And once again it’s one of the big names and once again bloody expensive I’m waiting on my takomo clubs to turn up which should be in the next week.
And they were certainly cheaper than any of the big names
Never been into ping even though theyre always spot on 🤷♂️
I'd like to see a blind test where you take an iron from 25 years ago vs a brand new iron from 2025 & see if people know which one they are hitting. There's only so much you can do with a hunk of metal on the end of a stick.
I don't see anything in the numbers that could not be explained by subtle strike difference. Even if it were true that the i210 delivered 200 less spin, the easiest way to improve spin is to change the ball you use. Therefore, I would buy used i210 in good condition and save a lot of money. Used set i210 go for US$500-$550, and new i240 is US$1,500.
Only review I've seen comparing the three models. Good job!
Hi Dan, like your content.
Not sure if you used the i240 for warmup but there is 2 158 carry numbers as well as a 167. That is a big difference.
I game the i230 and tbh the i240 from what ive seen offers nothing extra which shows how good the the i210 is considering its what 8 years old
I think the problem for manufacturers is that average golfers want improvement every generation whereas pros want virtually the same clubs for 25 years.
I've got the 210's. Think I'll stick with them.
Can't not see it… Little Red Riding hat. 😂
Great thing about ping clubs they don’t bring out new clubs each week unlike some brands
Not used Ping since my Ping Eye 2’s a loooong time ago.
So basically, spend 200 quid and get the same clubs as spending over a grand.
nice to see a full review again
