It might sound too good to be true, but Charlie Woods has a golden opportunity to represent the United States in the Junior Ryder Cup.

A little over a week ago, Woods struggled at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. He shot an 11-over 81 in the opening round at Trinity Forest Golf Club, eliminating any chance for him to make the cut. Although it was a disappointing performance for the son of 15-time major champion Tiger Woods, he has proven this week that he’s mentally tough.
Woods, 16, has been outstanding at the Junior PGA Championship. Despite dealing with a rain delay at Ackerman-Allen Course, he shot a 5-under 66 in the third round on Thursday. He’s tied for second place heading into the final round.
“It was so much fun,” Woods said, via the Lafayette Journal & Courier. “I had a pretty fun chip on 16, but I just enjoyed being out there, having fun and hopefully I have a good chance of winning tomorrow.”

The top two finishers at the Junior PGA Championship will automatically qualify for the Junior Ryder Cup team. As of now, that bodes well for Woods.
Technically speaking, Woods can be a captain’s pick for the Junior Ryder Cup. There’s no guarantee that would happen, especially since he sits at 20th in the American Junior Golf Association rankings.

Thursday’s scorecard for Woods consisted of nine birdies and four bogeys. Suffice to say, it was an eventful day.

“My round was pretty up and down, and it gave me a heart attack out there,” Woods said. “But nine birdies is pretty good. A couple of three-putts, I made a few mistakes today but overall pretty solid round. Pretty good position going into tomorrow.”
We’ll see if Woods can minimize the mistakes this Friday and secure a spot on the Junior Ryder Cup team.
