Ben Davis joins the 94 WIP Morning Show to break down how Phillies manager Rob Thomson thinks about matchups — especially when it comes to his bullpen and lineup decisions. Davis explains why Thomson stays even-keeled and how that shapes his day-to-day managing style. A must-watch for any Phillies fan trying to understand the method behind the moves.

Let’s say it’s game one of the playoffs. Does Mick Ael get two innings? I I it with Rob Thompson, it all comes down to matchups. That’s the bottom line. That’s why you’re seeing a platoon situation with the righties and lefties in the lineup. And that’s why you’re seeing the same thing with the with the guys out of the bullpen. It’s strictly a platoon situation. He is a firm believer in righties and lefties matchups, and that’s the way it’s going to be. Do you think he would want Do you think he would want the starter that comes in though to give him two to three innings as a reliever? Is that is that what he’d prefer it be? I think everyone would prefer that. Yeah. Having said that, it doesn’t mean if the guy throws two innings and he’s rolling six up, six down, that doesn’t mean he’s necessarily coming out for that third inning depending on who’s coming up in the lineup at that particular time of the ball game. It’s it it is strictly a matchup thing with him. Uh that’s the way it is. Now, from time to time, he will go with his gut like with Sanchez the other night saying, “You know what? you got the ninth inning with Wheeler and that that start before the the All-Star break said you got you got the ninth inning. From time to time it is a gut thing with him, but for the most part it’s going to be a matchup thing.

Ben Davis on top of the day to day operations. Topper very statistical. He s gotta put the statistical mindset and the actual feel of the game together. Go Phils
People acting like Topper is the only manager who does this. We faced Chapman twice this series, neither time was it the 9th. Cora pitched his closer in the 7th and 8th, because of the matchup. Same as basically every other team in the modern era. Times have changed, and we've figured out the current hitter at the plate is more important than an arbitrary inning.
