Cameron Young fires 65 to take 5-shot lead into final round at the Wyndham Championship

It’s all there for the taking for Cameron Young.

The 28-year-old Wake Forest is one of the most accomplished active players on Tour without a win to his name, having racked up seven runner-up finishes and 22 top-10s in his career thus far. But that first win has eluded him. He can change all that with a solid round Sunday at Sedgefield Country Club, about 30 miles from where he played his college golf.

In his third round Saturday, Young made six birdies in total, including a stretch of four straight on holes 3-6, offset by one bogey at the tough par-4 14th.

He enters the final round with a five-shot lead over Colombia’s Nico Echavarria, who made five birdies on the inward nine Saturday en route to a 64. He’s 15 under, three shots clear of a three-way tie for third between Mac Meissner, Chris Kirk and Aaron Rai, who won this event last year. Amateur Jackson Koivun sits alone in sixth place at 11 under after a 65 Saturday.

Two-shot swing cuts into Cameron Young’s lead

Cameron Young’s bogey-free streak ended at 39 holes when he stumbled at the par-4 14th — which is playing as the toughest hole at Sedgefield Country Club this week. At the same time, Nico Echavarria rolled in a birdie putt one hole ahead of Young, on the 15th, shrinking Young’s lead from six to four in the blink of an eye.

It’s still a somewhat comfortable lead, and it’s still bigger than his lead to start the day, but there’s no doubt that things just got a little tighter in the Young camp. He has five holes remaining in his third round.

An absolutely beauty for the man from Finland, who moved to 7 under and into the top 20 with this eagle on No. 17. He made birdie on the 18th en route to a 3-under 67 on Saturday, which has him in a tie for 12th at 8 under as of 4 p.m. ET.

Amateur Jackson Koivun moves into the top 5 at the Wyndham Championship

Jackson Koivun, a rising junior at Auburn University, entered the Wyndham Championship on a sponsor exemption. Not only did he make the cut, the 20-year-old California native fired a 4-under 31 on the outward nine Saturday to move into the top five on the leaderboard.

“Honestly, I think my driving has been pretty good these past couple weeks. I don’t say I hit it overly far, but I’ve been hitting it pretty straight, which is very nice and been able to gain some shots that way. And my ball-striking has been pretty good the past couple weeks, so happy with that, and I’ve always been a pretty strong putter, so that’s kind of came over pretty well.”

Koivun shot 64 on Friday at the John Deere Classic last month, which was the lowest round by an amateur on Tour this season up until Ole Miss golfer and NCAA National Champion Michael La Sasso fired a 63 at the 3M Open last week.

He’s in prime position to finally get it done with less about 30 holes to go.
