Padraig Harrington: 2025 ISPS Handa Senior Open triumph is ‘euphoric’ | Golf Channel

Bodri, many, many congratulations. You’ve come close to winning this championship in the past, second, twice, once in a playoff. What does it mean to you to finally get your hands on that trophy? You know, right now I’m just thrilled to have won the tournament, to gone out there and played well. I think, yeah, that will seep in. I I I know you were talking about, you know, having won the Open to win the Senior Open. There’s only five players. Is that right? So, you want to be in that category. I think they’re the sort of things that you realize over the next couple of days what what it the significance of it. Right now I’m just uh thrilled just a bit euphoric about getting it done. Started the day with a two-shot lead built a four shot lead but then Thomas birdied four hole four birdies in six holes to get you down to two. What were you thinking as all that was unfolding? Didn’t know he did it. Never look at leaderboards. The only time I saw a leaderboard on 18. I asked Ronan on 17 what was my lead? Never looked at the leaderboard. fully focused on what I was doing. Telling us all week that you’ve been struggling with your golf swing, you weren’t feeling particularly confident in it. How do you explain the fact you’ve come through this and and emerged as the champion when you weren’t feeling comfortable? I think I I really had a bad warm up this morning, like really bad again. And and I just think when you go out like that, you just you’re prepared to get the job done wherever the ball goes. You’re going to hit the shot. You’re going to get it. You know, your expectations go down. And and and I managed myself very well. I I I tried to swing the smoothest, slowest I could all day. Just tried to really just really swing within myself. Just tried to tone it down and and and as I said, just get around there. I happen to play quite well as it turned out. So, I just didn’t overthink it when I was on the golf course. I hit some beautiful iron shots to start off with. H So, yeah, I was it it worked very nicely, but I was prepared for a fight to be honest. And I I I was surprised. I I probably played as well as I did and and uh I had a lot of nice chances all day. I’m sure from the outside it looked very comfortable, but there was at times there was a little bit of uh turmoil in my own head at times. As we mentioned, you are just the fifth player to win the Open Championship and the Senior Open. What does that mean to you? Because a very historic thing to do. You’ve joined a great club. Yeah, you know, as I said, as you get older, you realize, you know, a lot of things is is the legacy and what you’ve done and you want to win in a great golf course like Sunnale. You want to do things that that stand out and and having won a real open coming now, winning the senior Open, it does it it does give some I don’t know validation. It’s certainly satis satisfying to do it to extend your career that way. H there’s some great names on the trophy. I was watching it coming out last night. I was looking at the at the board inside that has all the winners and yeah I it’s deep sense of satisfaction when you got I’m kind of on a high of winning but then there there will be that deep sense of satisfaction knowing that you’ve uh you know you’ve done both and especially you know you come to this stage there’s only a certain window you know you you can win later on as a senior but the window is you know up to you know they sort of say up to about 55 56 so you want to get it done and having having had a couple of second places. Yeah, I I didn’t want to leave it too long. It start coming a problem if you don’t win it too soon. So, I’m glad I’ve got mine. Many many congratulations. Fantastic plan this week. Well done. Thank you.

  1. One of the top eschelon players that does not look at leaderboards. Rare in the modern game, he 's not afraid to do it his way. Legendary player!! Many Congratulations Padraig!

  2. A class act on an off the course. Everything to be proud of as an Irish man. One of the hardest working players on the tour and so deserves the win.

  3. How did you feel when Bjorn birdied 4 in 6 holes? Didn't have a clue, couldn't have cared less, That's the Irish in the man, superstar and all round good egg, got to love Padraig Harrington, senior Open Champion golfer 2025🍀

The faster you swing, the off balance you become!'

  6. One things for sure the satisfaction and the celebrations will last more than a few minutes ! Well done and another incredible win just weeks after winning the US Senior Open.

  7. What an absolute legend, gentleman, and good human being. A brilliant ambassador for golf and for Ireland. Fills me with pride 💚🇮🇪

  8. So nice to see him take real pleasure in his achievement. What a contrast to Sheffler’s speech after The Open. I’m sure it will last for more than 2 minutes!

  9. I was outside the Leinster players entrance after a match some years ago with my rugby obsessed 12 year old son who was hoping for an autograph from some of his heroes. The first person out the door was Padraig Harrington (???) who came straight to us and signed my sons autograph book. He asked my son if he could borrow his biro and proceeded to sign autographs for the entire group of people there. When finished, Padraig came all the way back to my son and thanked him graciously for lending the pen.
I wish there were more sportstars with his graciousness and generosity of spirit.

  10. Well done Padraig. You’re an absolute gentleman and a Legend. The West Brit alleged Irishman from the North could learn a lot from you and Shane Lowry.

  11. He is a true gentleman, And a great ambassador for Irish golf ⛳️ and Ireland 🇮🇪 well done 👍
