Inside Course Rating | Who Rates Golf Courses?

I’m the manager of course rating and services for Massolf and between me and over 80 trained experienced course rating volunteers, we conduct the ratings for all of the courses in Massachusetts. The rating volunteers are split up into three geographic regions. the Cape Cod and Islands, Greater Boston and Northshore, and Western Mass. Once a rating has been scheduled, there are certain steps that we follow for every rating. First, we conduct a preliminary rating. During this aspect of the rating, we will do an accurate measurement of the course from each T set using a high-end GPS receiver that averages data collected from over 400 satellites. We will also measure such things as elevation change from tea to green, what percentage of the green is surrounded by bunkers, the depth of those bunkers, the distance from the middle of the green to lateral obstacles, and many other factors. For the full course rating, a team of raiders must be assembled, the number of T- sets that need to be rated for men and women will actually dictate how many raiders will be used. The USGAA recommends that T sets up to 6,500 yards in length be rated for women and all T- sets be rated for men. After the full encourse rating work has been completed, all of the rating data is checked for accuracy and is entered into the course rating system. Once all of this information is double checked, a course rating and slope ratings are generated and shared with a head professional or club representative. After the club understands the changes that have been made, those new ratings can now be published. A course rating is provided by Mass Golf as a service to all member clubs.
