LIV Golf sensation Bryson DeChambeau missed out on playing his preferred course owned by U.S. President Donald Trump after Trump National Bedminster lost the PGA Championship hosting rights.
Before his 2022 shift to LIV Golf, DeChambeau was a leading figure on the PGA Tour and has maintained his high-flying status on the Saudi-funded league.
Trump’s fondness for golf is no secret, and wife Melania recently issued a three-word response to his obsession. He has forged a strong bond with DeChambeau over recent years. The pair turned heads last summer when Trump featured on the U.S. Open winner’s YouTube channel for his ‘Break 50’ series.
DeChambeau disclosed that his ties with Trump go back to 2017, even sharing the stage during the 79 year old’s Presidential celebrations after his victory last November. Yet, he missed the chance to compete in a major at one of Trump’s courses—a favorite of his.
“I love all the Trump Golf courses I have played so far,” DeChambeau expressed when questioned by Trump.com about his top Trump course. “I really enjoy Trump International Golf Club in Palm Beach. I feel it offers a unique collection of holes, with not one hole looking or playing the same as the other.”
“I love the risk-reward options throughout the golf course, starting with the drivable par-four sixth hole. Holes 14-18 are unlike any other holes that I have ever played in Florida. The elevation is really unique, and the holes are just beautiful.
“In 2022, Trump National Bedminster will be hosting the PGA Championship. I have heard nothing but great things about the golf course, and I am really excited to play a major championship on a Trump Golf property. I am hoping to get up to Bedminster to visit the property a few times over the next couple of years to familiarize myself with the golf course.”
In January 2021, Trump National Bedminster was stripped of the 2022 U.S. PGA Championship in the wake of the January 6 riot in Congress. Following the decision, a representative for the Trump Organization revealed they were “incredibly disappointed.
“It has become clear that conducting the PGA Championship at Trump Bedminster would be detrimental to the PGA of America brand and would put at risk the PGA’s ability to deliver our many programs and sustain the longevity of our mission,” said PGA of America President Jim Richerson. It was a decision made to ensure the PGA of America and PGA professionals can continue to lead and grow our game for decades to come.”
DON’T MISS…
Meanwhile, DeChambeau is coming off an 11th-place finish in LIV Golf UK at JCB Golf and Country Club. Joaquin Niemann secured a fifth victory of the season to cement his place at the top of the individual standings.
The two-time U.S. Open champion, DeChambeau, expressed his displeasure with a spectator’s comments during a recent event. Captured on video as he approached the ninth green, he remarked: “I love the banter up there. But they can’t be saying miss it. They can’t be saying miss it, miss it, miss it.”
DeChambeau, aiming for a spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team, is set to compete next in LIV Golf Chicago at Bolingbrook Golf Club Chicago from August 8 to 10.
