Can I Break 70 at Philadelphia’s Most Underrated Golf Course?

Welcome to Lannarch Country Club. [Music] Founded in 1901, this is a hidden gem in Philadelphia and I cannot wait to show you guys around here. Goal today is to break par 71. We’re playing the tips. This is going to be heck of a test. First hole coming up. In a typical Jake fashion, I have not hit a golf ball. So, just trying to get this out there. It’s not in the water. No, you’re not in the water. Bunker’s out there. If you get a good lie, you’re fine. We’re over here in the right rough. We’ve got 145 pin. I’ve got pitching wedge right to left green and just trying to throw it up there. [Music] carry and get a little left. We’re sit down. Yeah. Wow. That thing. Oh, man. I jumped right. Yeah, that went fast. We’re off. Was just talking to Kevin who I’m playing with today. He’s a member here at Lan Arc and he said everything here if you’re short of the pin is great. Everything’s good except if you’re long. Uh hopefully we can get this one up and down and manage par up slope a little bit and it should just it’ll just keep rolling. Yeah. Just drip it out there, right? Yeah. Yeah. Settle. Settle. Just nothing you do about that one. Just Yeah. Oh, good roll. Thank you. That was That was a good roll. All right. All right. Bogey on the first. So, I mentioned on the uh T- box land was founded in 1901. It was actually founded as kind of the the people’s club was semi-private and in the late 1800s, early 1900s, you had mainline clubs popping up. Uh Marion is one. And this was kind of the people’s golf club. And I’ve got a really cool story about somebody who bought the club and kind of transformed it right after this T-shot, the telephone pole. Uh yeah, maybe a little right of that. Little right of that. How about these T markers, too? These are class right here. I love those. That’s unique and classy. Should be fine. Just missed the Yeah. Wow, these fairways are firm today. Yeah, they’re bouncing. So, it’s 40 to middle. Say it’s 45 hole in the rough, but that’s okay. We got a really good look at this green opening. Beautiful shot here. Love the framing of the shot. There’s some really nuanced moguls here right behind me, which I’ll show on the overlay. There’s a couple church church pew um kind of mounding here. There’s a lot of really cool little features at this golf course. All right, let’s get one on the green. Potentially fly or lie. Try to hit a cut in there on the green middle. Carry. Carry and be good. Carry. Be good. There we go. Here we go. Really nice, dude. Thanks. As I mentioned, founded in 1901. 1920s, 1930s. The clubhouse burned down. Two employees actually passed away and the club had some issues. and Thomas Fitzgerald, a furniture magnet, and he was actually part owner of the Philadelphia Athletics, which has now turned into the Oakland Athletics, which I don’t know if they’re in Oakland anymore, but anyhow, bought the club, put in a lot of money, rebuilt the clubhouse, actually added another nine holes. This was 27 holes, privately owned by individual. It has since turned into a membersowned club, but just a very cool story. And unfortunately they sold off part of the part of the land and nine holes were taken away. So it is an 18hole complex here. A great one at that. Super underrated and excited to show you all around today. We got this for birdie. Number one handicap here. Left center, left edge. And see one. Boom. Here we go. Good bird. Good bird. Thank you. So, I’m here at Lannarch and I mentioned earlier Kevin’s hosting me. And people ask me a lot of times, how do you play these courses? It’s impossible. They’re private. Well, that’s not true. And I’ll just tell you, for example, how I’m playing here. I play in um GAP club matches every spring. Golf Association of Philadelphia, you play against other clubs. I played Kevin and uh I don’t know who won. Who won? Ah, he’s pointing at me. I don’t know if I don’t actually remember that but um I remember anyhow we become friends after that and he said hey come out check land out which I have done before but I’ve never done a video so that’s how just normal people stuff look at this tea box back here epic good rip that’s right down the middle thanks finally this tea box is back tucked in this little nook here we’re playing the tips and we are as far back as you possibly can get. But it is so cool. This is such a cool tea box. Hang in there. Hang left over the trees on the right. It’s in that. Is there a bunker on the right or is it just a grass? Uh yeah, that bunker’s hard to reach on the fly if you It bounced in that direction. 157 pin out of the bunker. I’ve got eight iron and we’re just kind of aiming at that tree left of the pin. Try to hit a cut here. Choke down a little bit on the club. Oh no. Catch a piece. It’s right. Okay. It caught up face. So that’s a that’s a possible up and down. It’ll roll pretty straight and then just kind of feed left at the end. Settle a little. Settle. Settle. There you go. Come on. Back there. Here it comes. Here it comes. All right. We’ve got about 10 ft maybe for par. See it? Oh, good putt. Thank you. We’ll sneak it in the edge there. Nice. Thank you. [Music] It’s a back pin. So, it’s about 220. We got about 220 hole. Little downhill. There’s wind in our face. Yeah. Wind in the face. Yep. And I’m going to pull four iron. Try not to get it all the way back there. Just Just right of this hole was perfect. Uh, it’s wipey. Is there green over there? Uh, no green. Oh, there you’ll probably be in the right rough. Oh, good bounce. Yeah. No, no green over there, but you’ll have a uh you have to hit a little floppy pitch shot onto the green and roll it down to the hole. I’ve uh kind of missed on the high side here, which is not great. Good lie into the wind. That’s That’s definitely helpful. So, I’m going to have to kind of, like we said back there, hit a high floppy shot, which we have in the bag. So, let’s see what we can do. Settle. Okay, it’s going left at the hole. So, I think this is going to be like left edge putt coming back. That was a good shot. It’s just a bad miss uphill. I think it’s going to be more than left edge. I got like maybe a cup, almost a cup up the hill. Oh, that it’s not a cup. And it was straight. Jeez. Not ideal. Great putt, dude. confident like this. All right, we got a par five here. Where’s our Where’s our line? Okay, we can see this mound out here on the right. You can’t see the bunker in front of it. Um, it’s probably about a 285 carry over. If you take it over it, you’re fine. But the left side of that mound, anything left of that is fine. Should be perfect. Just hit left. Boom. Perfect. Literally exactly where I sold you. There we go. Right down the middle. We have hit a seed of a drive down the middle. 207. I believe this is a 535 hole or no, it’s probably like 545. So, you can do the math at home. 300 yard drive. We got four iron. Trying to hit a little draw around this tree. Oh, get left. Stay left. Left. Oh, I Oh, you might have caught a piece. Come on. I can’t quite see it, but you might have caught a piece. Close. There’s a There’s an edge on that green. It’s close. This is that false front I’m talking about. And I just just carried it. Actually, didn’t just I hit it pin high. It’s four iron. That’s a great shot. Got a nice look at Eagle here. We’ve got this for eagle up the hill. Got to get it there. Let’s give it a good run right to left. Jake, you had it here. What you see is what you get. Your line is that big tree in the distance with a little cut. Yeah. Uh because it’s a long way to get to that tree. So, got it. Just stay off those mounds on the left. They’re messy. Back to even par. Got a nice birdie back there. It was a great four iron. Hitting the ball well. Putting it well. Feeling pretty good so far. Oh boy. Oh boy. Hold. That’s not good. That’s in the road. Uh Could hit a tree. Could be okay. The second I say I’m hitting it good, I blast one right. Probably into the road. Going to hit a provisional here. Not great. Dang it. That’s right, too. Not good. And the worst part is I I have to lay up out of the bunker here. So this is my provisional. Just going to lay it up. 105 back pin. Got sandwiched. All right, I’ve got this for a six. Good speed. Thanks. By the way, the last four holes I’ve gone five under here. Really? Oh, yeah. That’s what it’s a great match play golf course. That is good to know. One of the other claim to fames here at Lanarch is they hosted the 1958 PGA Championship. Sam Sneed was actually in the lead after 54 holes. Did not end up winning. Line here right down the middle. A little cut. Uh yeah, see the bridge in the distance. Probably your aim is uh about 30 yards left of that. Got 3-wood out and hope hope to hit this like 260. That’s a good a good poke with this 3-wood for me. That’s good. Carries a hill. Should chase down and pretty good. It’s down the middle. It’s hit well. Dao Finsterwald. He was the PGA Championship winner here at Lan Arc in 1958. Quite a legend in that. So, um, beat Samne right here. I’m going to take a 50° here and kind of flight this. Try not to spin it a lot because if I spin something, it’s going to come back down that slope. Oh, be right. Oh, come on. Good shot. Thank you. Good shot. Sit right there. Perfect. Little nice little birdie putt. I was just mark cleaning up my divot. Does anybody recognize that T? Let me know in the comments where you think that one’s from. Uphill, left to right. See one. Good roll. Hammering it, man. I thought that that looked good all the way and then it just kept going. Good putt. Thank you. All right. We’re three over. Three over. If that triple, I don’t know. I Sometimes when you make a swing that just doesn’t make sense. I like to say it’s an act of God. I don’t know how it happened. It’s not going to happen again. But it did happen. We’re three over, but it feels like I’m playing a lot better than I’m three over. If you guys are enjoying this video, hit that like and subscribe button. Helps me out a lot, and I would really appreciate that. 215. I’ve got four iron. Try to hit a cut there to the back right pin. I already hit one really good four iron today on the par five. So, let’s let’s see another. Oh, that’s pretty. Yeah, that was hit. Well, it’s Can’t see. I heard it hit the green. Yeah, it’s on the green somewhere uphill. Left to right. This is pretty uphill. You got to hit this pretty good. Yep. And we’re short. Would you guess that? It’s frustrating. Oh, it’s got to go right. That has to go right. I hit that right where I wanted to. I never get mad if I hit it where I wanted to. Right. Right. [Music] Ninth hole, par five. Got to get one back here. Little bit of a sloppy three putt, but hit the second putt where I wanted to. And as we said back there, can’t get mad if you hit a putt where you want to, right? Cut, cut, cut. Perfect. Hit the fairway. Big bounce. There you go. There we go. Fairways. First job. 210 to the middle. I’ve got four iron. Oh, that’s fat. Just get a little left and you’re fine. All right. Chipping a putt. Kind of just a bump and run up here up the hill. Pretty straight. I’m going to take pitching wedge. Go, go, travel. Yeah, it’s a field shot that I just don’t have the best feel for yet. That was a good shot. I just didn’t get enough juice. It’s got to wiggle left, but not a ton. I think it’s going left early and then kind of flattening out. All right, up the hill. I hope I’m right. Well, the world will bear witness. Oh, it hit a mark. It was right in the heart. It just It hit something and shot right and it’s this right here. Yeah. I mean, that was going right in the heart. Did it wiggle left? It was perfect reading. Oh, go. All right. Good. The trolley, which is an alternate logo here, and it’s pretty top-notch. If I was a member here, I’d be thinking about trying to get that as my main logo, but that’s neither here nor there. I’m on the 10th Tox here. And Route Three is right behind here. And this is where the trolley came from. Right from Philly, and that’s how they get that alternate logo, which is a pretty cool thing. I mean, people used to ride the trolley out on the weekends, jump off, walk right here cuz it’s right there. I mean, Ruth is right there. And play golf. It’s how it came to be. Play a cut here. Try to get this one up there up in the wind. That’s right. It should be fine. You might just kick a little right into the Could be blocked out by those trees up there, but it should be in play. Kind of got a pretty nice little break over here. I’ve got a I’ve got an opening. Just got to flight down to 50. I’ve got 125. I’m going to hit 50°ree and just kind of flight one up there. Friendly pin location. I like a nice little shot here. Oh, sit. Ah, perfect. It should roll back lower level. Wow, that just shoots it away. Yeah, just Yeah, but Wow. All right, we’re on the green, but further than I anticipated. Pin is down there. This is a big side winder. It’s going to get up to this apex and just shoot right. Yeah. So, end it up there and have it fall down. Yep. I agree. That’s a great roll. Thank you. All you can do. We will take that. [Music] Let’s get the driver. Just stay down on it a little more. Oh. All right. Left rough. Whoa. Big bounce left. All right. All right. And over here in this left rough, I have a ginormous tree. I think that’s an oak, but not certain. I have 180 pin, but I’m really just trying to hit it to the front middle. Um, I’ve got eight iron because I really have to get over this tree, and that’s going to have to be a sky high eight iron. So, that is the plan. Oh, it’s over. Might need to get down. 180. Great shot, J. That’s It stopped on a dime. It flew probably 175. And we got a great look at birdie. You flew it so far back. You hit it almost to the a flat area. Look at that. Pretty like a ball outside, right? Might move a little more than you think. Probably, I guess. Oh, nice bird. Caught the edge. We caught the edge. There we go. Sneaking back in. [Music] 190 into the wind here. Got five iron. And now I’m not sure if it’s enough, but um don’t want to go over. So yeah, we’re going to hit this shot. Oh, no. Just hold hold. No, it’s too far right. Too far right. But honestly, a that was a number, too. That was a number. Um dang it. That up and down is not as difficult as it looks. All right. The good news is the wind’s into. Don’t have a ton of green to work with, but it is doable. I get to pop this up and just hope it just sits. Nope. All right. Not bad, but kind of was a bail out. Didn’t want to leave one down here. Downhill, right? Yes. Come on. Come on. Come on. I thought that was going to be like the fastest putt of the day. Right over the the right over the mound. Little draw is fine. Little fade is fine. Okay, that’s perfect. That’s fine. I was just worried about the tree, but once you uh once you get past that tree, you’re fine. All right. Yeah, we’re we’re good. 70. Okay. 70 pin. We got lob wedge. Come on, Jake. Stuff on here. Sit, sit, sit, sit, sit, sit and spin. Sit, sit. All right. Okay. Good story. How far did that go? That went probably 90. Oh my goodness. So, I’ve been hitting on the Trackman a lot. Yeah. Real verse like Trackman number. It just is feels different to me. Yeah. That felt like a 70 swing and it just went so far. Pretty straight putt, I think. Drop. Good putt, bud. Thank you. This is my favorite hole here. This is my favorite hole. Absolutely. This is a great par4. I love how the fairway rolls down here. See? Good drive here. Hang in there. Good ball. Hang left. Just anything left of the tree is fine. It hit the tree. Yeah. But I think we’ll be all right. We got 157. I got nine iron. Kind of punched one out there. Potential fly or lie. Sit. Sit. Sit. All right. Sit. Stay. All right. You’re on. Sit. Settle. Settle. Sit. Wow. I thought that was perfect speed. It just keeps going. All right, let’s get this in the hole. Oh, had it moving left. Yeah. Yeah. Three about 20 to the green. And I’m going to give this a rep. Try to hit a draw here. Good ball. Oh yeah. Be right. Should be good. I might trickle up to the front. Okay. I can’t see that far, but take that. All right. We hit a drive up here about 20 ft. Excellent drive up the hill right to left. This would be really nice to see go in. Settle. Jeez, I talked myself into hitting it too hard. Jake, settle. Oh man, this is quite the adventure here. get my money’s worth on this green. All right, your recovery. I don’t You can just laugh at that. I I mean, I could get mad, but that’s not going to help anything. 16th hole here. Little tiny little launch pad of a T- box. Pretty cool. Just want to recreate that drive from the last hole. Try to hit a little draw up that right side. Draw. Don’t cut. That was hit hard. You could carry, but it’s over. Is it? Yeah, you should be all right. This is probably not the smartest play here, but I’m going to try to just act like the tree is air. 90% air, right? Um, and just smoke one through here. We’ll see what happens. Straight down. Yeah, perfect layup in the fairway. 137. I’m going to take pitching wedge and hit a little draw to that pin. Oh, I hung it out there. Downhill. A little right to left here. Let’s make a putt. How about that? Let’s make a little putt. That’s got to go hard. And it goes right. Oh boy. Great. Thank you. Good recovery there. Thanks. [Music] 137 here. Got nine iron. Tried to hit a little cut up there. Past the hole is okay. And it’s a beautiful par three here. This is beautiful. Where is it? It’s way short. Little heavy. Yep. Hell of a bunker shot here. Way up. Oh, that’s pretty good. That’s really good shot. Here we go. Little tap in action. Par. There we go. 289 to the green. I got driver. We’re sending it 18. Look at this hole. This is an awesome finisher. That was on them. It’s not a bad leave. You would have landed right on them if you hit when they were standing there. It’s a good shot. We’ll flip wedge in. All right, we’re pretty much pin high. Just left of the green. But out of the rough here. Got a little back stop. So I’m probably going to land this long. Hopefully it comes back. Come back. We got a big right to left here. Slippery. This is an interesting putt here. Jesus, that’s brutal. Great putt, dude. That was not an easy. Wow. There’s 18 holes at Lannarch Country Club. Hope you guys enjoyed that. If so, hit that like and subscribe button. Course with a lot of character. I I love the mounding and like the unique undulation of the course. A lot of the mounds are actually put in by Brian Schneider who did a renovation here about four four or so years ago and it feels like it’s been here forever. So, I really like that touch. Greens, man. When these things get rolling fast, watch out. Anyhow, hope you guys enjoyed that and a lot more

Today I take you inside Llanerch Country Club, a private Golden-Age gem tucked just west of Philadelphia that most golfers drive past without ever knowing it exists. Llanerch hosted the 1958 PGA Championship, the first contested at stroke play, yet it rarely makes the national rankings, making it one of the most underrated courses in Pennsylvania.

In this full-round vlog, I attempt to break 70 from the championship tees. You’ll see every hole, hear my yardages, club selections, and thought process, and get a ground-level look at the bold bunkering and unique green complexes Llanerch Country Club boasts.

If you enjoy course-history storytelling, shot-by-shot strategy, and private-club access you won’t find elsewhere, you’re in the right place!

  1. That course looks great! Very classic country club style course. The restoration you mentioned compliments it nicely. Not your best day with the flat stick for this one but it happens, that's golf. Keep them coming!

  2. After a long ass tough day at work, a half hour with jake is a perfect stress reliever. Congrats on the 3 peat, too, Jake!

  3. Love the look of this course. Alex Findlay is very underrated. His green complexes especially are always interesting and beautiful.

  4. Great video, Jake! I would love to play Llanarch someday because I love Findlay designed courses. Also great up and down on 17. Touch of class!!

  5. Great video! That course is definitely a hidden gem given the courses in the area, love some of the little architectural touches.

  6. Gents! If you have the opportunity, host Jake. He will do right by the course you surely take pride in! Make sure you make the time to join him for some drone shots and other unique things he does to create these vids for YouTube and Instagram. Seeing his creative process is part of the fun.

  7. Once again, another mint conditioned golf course to play on. Great birdie on #2. The tee is from Merion CC. I love a course that ends with an eagleable par 5 or drivable par 4. Good playing. Eliminate that 1 hole and , well, you know. Till next time.

  8. I caddied there from 1970 thru 1977 I really like the changes since then. Significantly less trees, subtle changes to green complexes, especially 10 & 15. The tree removals on the right of 7 make it a different hole.

  9. You may be the only golfer on YouTube to actually record a triple….respect the authenticity!!!
