Australia’s Adam Scott’s hopes of making the FedEx Cup playoffs are slipping away as American Cameron Young (-14) leads the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina.

The second round of the finale event of the PGA Tour’s regular season was suspended due to dangerous weather with the afternoon groups still out on course, including Scott who is -4 overall, ten shots off the lead with four holes remaining in his round.

The 45-year-old needs to come in at least a two-way tie for third to advance to the FedEx Cup playoffs, but Scott is only one shot above the projected cut line at present.

The 2013 Masters champion made a promising start to the tournament with an opening round 65 as seeks to avoid missing the playoffs for the second time in three years after 16 straight appearances in the post-season events.

But the veteran fell 33 places down the leaderboard as he is one-over par after 14 holes in his second round.

Scott made three birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey, but will have the chance to gain more a shot, or perhaps even two back, after piping a drive at the par 5 15th before the horn blew.

The highlight of the day belonged to Gary Woodland (-9) as the 2019 US Open champion made a stunning albatross, a two, at the par five fifth.

Woodland holed a seven-iron from 186 yards out after a 337-yard drive for the second albatross of the 41-year-old’s life.

The previous one came when he was in high school, and coincidentally was with a seven-iron as well.

“The key is obviously get it in the fairway and give yourself a chance,” Woodland said.

“I hit a nice drive, had 186 hole, we were trying to land it 183 and the wind was a little in so we thought it was a perfect 7-iron and it came off right where we were looking, landed 183, landed three short.

“Nice to see the crowd go nuts to make sure it went in. It was a good shot, but it was a lot of luck and one that I’ll remember, for sure.”

He added: “I mean, from that far away you’re just, I’m hoping the crowd goes nuts first and then I’ll know the ball disappeared.

“You can’t tell if it went behind the pin or not. Somebody yelled “go in” when it landed and so that was a nice bonus for sure.”

At the top of the leaderboard, Young has three holes to go in his second round.

The American followed up his opening round 63 by being seven-under par for the round to lead by a shot from England’s Aaron Rai, who has five holes left to play.

Mac Meissner and Sungjae Im (-12) are the clubhouse leaders after Meissner shot an equal low round of the day 63 alongside fellow American Cameron Rodgers (-7).

Meanwhile, at the other end of the leaderboard, big names Max Homa (-1 with five holes to play) and Tom Kim (+2 with five holes to play) appear set to miss the cut and end their hopes of reaching the playoffs.

PGA Tour rookie Karl Vilips, who needs a solo fourth finish or better to jump into the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings, is the best placed of the Australians at -6 following a second straight round of 67, while Aaron Baddeley has also made the cut at -3 following a 67 of his own.

Cam Davis is on the projected cut line at -3 with seven holes remaining when play resumes.
