1980 SEASON

to our people. You’re confirmed in Montreal and Vancouver and you’re going to love the ending. [Music] Holiday in hotels are number one in the world with the best locations near where you want to be. I can walk the most popular choice of location. We want to make you comfortable. [Music] We’re back live here and there’s Daryl Sitler. You know, Bill, uh Joe Croer has sent out Ron Ellis and Mike Kaziki. Now, they haven’t been on the ice for a while, so their legs might be not be very loose, so it’s going to be a tough penalty for them to kill off. Well, we’ll see what happens here. There’s the Buffalo Sabres trying to get a make a play and Turbo breaks it up and shoots it down the ice. Dunn and Van Boxmre along with Gear Perau and Craig Ramsey. The puck is shot over on the right side. Turns there again and Boxmir will try his luck. There’s no score in the game with 10 minutes and 46 seconds to play in the second period. A clearing pass over on the right side over the line. A pass for Ramsey from Gear. It’s broken up by Kaziki. Kaziki’s then jammed by Van Boxmmere. Puck goes loose to Craig Ramsey. Craig Ramsey gets it over here to Dun. Dun goes to Perau. Perau trying to find a man in position to get a shot. Perau backs off, goes back to Dunn. His shot hit Ellis. Turn chopped it up to Kaziki and Kaziki shoots it down the ice. 56 seconds left in the penalty. No score in the game. 10:06 to go now and counting in this second period. Buffalo with a man advantage coming up to center ice and Boxmere just drives it off the boards. Rebound into the corner. Salman tries to get there with Terry Martin and they get a whistle. Well, the Leafs, they played that really well. They played the box. You see Gilbert Bear Perole, Gil Bear Perole going over the bench. Well, there you see his record in the last nine games. Donnie Edwards said he’s just having an outstanding game, outstanding game, an outstanding season. He controls the play when he’s out there. What makes him so effective is his speed. He’s carrying the puck. Uh the defense, they have to uh kind of lay back and so they won’t be beat to the outside, which of course when they do that, they give up that zone and that’s so important that once you get in the zone, then you can do something with it. But they respect this lead. Believe me, we played for Philadelphia. What we like to do is try to check him in his own end. Have a man take him right away so he can’t handle the puck. Okay, Gary, the puck comes back to the blue line. Shfeld goes to the other side and Box Mirror shot. He fired it wide. He comes back to Shawnfeld again. Shfeld gets the pass. There’s a shot. Zero stopped that. Let’s see Martin with it. Martin trying to get out in front and it’s knocked off his stick. And it goes down the ice. It’s back of the net. Pan boxer brings it out with a back pass. That’s Seanfeld up through center up to the loose line. A shot knocked that off. Sitler’s back out. Turbo trying to clear it. Martin can’t touch it. It’s cleared back to the blue line. Shot fell a shot. Sir just saw that at the last second. Martin in for Ceiling. Caling is checked by Sitler. Was back out and Sitler. A long pass up at center over the line as Kaziki to Po for Sitler and it went by him. Buffalo come back up at center. A long shot and that ends up whistle leaving it behind the net. And here comes Dave Ferish up to Sitler at center with Saga. Sitler takes his shot. Edwards stopped. Into the corner it goes. Then Sali bumps into Mcknney and the puck goes sliding out the center. Ferish has it. Ferish a pass up or Boschman for Sagen. Sagen was given a bump. Boschman’s got the puck trying to get it out in front and Anderson missed the pass. Up at center it’s helming being chased back to his own line. Clears it back at center to Boschman offside. This game is coming to you from Maple Leaf Guidance in Toronto. Why don’t we discuss it over America? You got to have heart. You got to have a heart miles aart. If you’re going to brew a beer with great taste, there’s only one place to start. Men light has got life has got heart. It’s got heart and light. Join the movement to light. [Music] And there you see Joe Croer back on the Leaf bench. The time is 8:06 remaining in this second period and still no score in the game. That’s Derek Smith number 19 out there for Buffalo. The puck is over onto the left wing. Hickeyi trying to get in. He’s too well covered. Then he goes after it again. Centered it right in front. Smi’s got it. He’s right for the net. A hard drive. Another shot. And that one hit a leg aso had the rebound. And that’s a real close call, but Buffalo bring it right back over the line. Mlennon and couldn’t get a direct drive. And here comes Turbo. Turbo straight up at center over to five. He’s going right in. takes his shot and Edwards was at least 20 ft out of the net to challenge him. The puck goes into the corner. Buffalo shoot the puck down the ice and Turbo will go back and touch it and icing is the call with 719 remaining in the second period and the fans are really enjoying this. They certainly are. Well, it’s been an exciting game. A lot of a little bit of everything except goal so far. Jimmy Roberts really working on that gum. There’s the other man of the group, Roger Nielsen upstairs sending the info down. Boy, that last play there is Don Edwards. He had to be 20 ft out of the net. You know, when a puck carrier sees that, he should look for his winger breaking down the other side. He got a sure goal. Okay, Gary. And the puck is brought up by Dunn. Got it up through center. Went by Dudley. into the corner is Craig Ramsey and he’s covered by Terry Martin. The puck comes loose on loose trying to get it over to Dudley. Finally, it goes behind the net. A Ferish off the glass and that goes into the crowd. Next Saturday and Sunday, Sports Weekend brings you live coverage of the Silver Broom World Curling Championship from Monton, New Brunswick. [Applause] [Music] And as we get set to face off, the Leafs change their defense again. Turbo and Salman come out with 6 minutes and 55 seconds to play in the second period. And we have no score. Outshot Buffalo in the first period, 15-6. It’s back of the net for Bora Saling over on the wing. Cleared out at center tried to hit Po and then Buffalo drive it back off the stick of Don. Now it’s Saling again for PO. The puck comes loose. Don loose and he got away. Cleared by Pimo for Terry Martin. They go to the boards again and Turbo makes sure there’s no further play. Now, there’s one of the main stays of the defense of the Buffalo Sabres, Jin Shfeld. You know, that guy blocks more shots some nights than the goalender. And time and time again, he’ll stick his face in front of those things. He comes to play. There’s Crock getting ready for this in faceoff. Puck goes back of the net. Picked off by Salman. Salman taking his time now then being watched by loose. It goes over to Terry Martin for Ian Turbo up for Pay. Pay then for Sitler and that just went off his stick wide to the net. Still height a pass. Turbo broke it up. Now it’s back out and here’s Craig Ramsey going down with Loose. Saling back to Loose. There’s the shot and it’s cleared by Saling into the corner. rolls across in front again picked up by Craig Ramsey. Ramsay gets it out and the lease break that up. Sitler a pass for Po. Pay then tried to hit Terry Martin. Payone with it again. Shot it over the line. Buffalo break it up. Police are changing on the go. Dunn comes back with a drive and Z stopped that on his shoulder. Oh, that one hurt. Boy, did Richie Dunn ever get a hold of that one. [Music] Live from Aple Lake Gardens in Toronto, Hockey Night in Canada, spread your wings in the new 1980 Thunderbird. Now a new contemporary size that displays its elegant heritage wherever you look. With its new size and new 4.2 L engine, this Thunderbird offers improved fuel economy. And there’s a new option. The first automatic overdrive transmission built in North America for even better highway fuel economy. So spread your wings in a new dimension of space. Thunderbird. A better idea for the 80s. Well, here’s a real zinger. It was a screenshot. Caught right on the arm and the catching side. The shot so far. Toronto have eight shots. Buffalo nine to this point in the second period. A Ferish. A pass up at center goes to the Buffalo blue line. Cleared out by Van Boxmir and Perau. Quick pass from Martin that was broken up by Ferish. Now then Perau will try again to Martin. That’s too far. Perau was knocked down. They go to the boards and we’re going to have another whistle. Boschman, Sagen, and Anderson out there. Well, I think Jill Bear Perau is a certain bet to hit that 100 point mark again this year. He has done it once in his career. Trying to do it a second time. Perau with Bosch winning the draw. The puck is back in the net. That’s Dave Pearls, number 26. And it’s cleared the rest of the way out by Bossman and drew right back in again by Van Boxmir. And Richard Martin a shot throws right there. He scores. He got the rebound and put it in the net and it’s one- nothing Buffalo. Well, that’s the first one of the night. But a shot right from the long side of the boards. And look at Perole sneaking in there going for that net. Boy, you talk about how important it is for that second man to head for the net. You never know when the rebound is is going to be laying there. That’s one of the reasons that Jill Bear Perau has 34 goals. He knows where the net is and he takes advantage of the situation when it’s there from Richard Martin and John Van Boxmmere. Time 1502. 1502. Peru, Martin, and Van Boxmre. And that’s the first scoring play of the game and Buffalo leads one- nothing. That one bounced near the leaf net. It comes over to Vine. Vine shot it and look out that went into the center exit between the two benches. Well, we have another look at that goal by Gilber Perau. His 34th of the year. The shot will originate from the left point. Now look at Perole cruising in the slot area. Nobody around, no defense. He just walks in there and has an easy time of it. It’s amazing that he could get that wide open and defense not even close to the play. It’s Pat Hickey back to Salman. Salman’s pass up on the wing to Vive. Vive then for Diggo. Diggo was checked. Pegney’s pass stopped by Salman. Salman gets over the line. took his shot and that was blocked by number 23 Mike Ramsey and it’s Mike Ramsey bringing the puck over again to Smith. Smith does score Derek Smith into the top leftand corner and it’s two nothing Buffalo. Boy, what a shot. But you know Mike Ramsey usually you want the guy to just to lay it behind and he passed a back pass there and very hard Smith made a good play to control it. Then did he fire a shot to the top corner? Now watch this drop pass. Usually you just want to lay it there. Now he back passed it. Ramsey and that was 37 seconds after Perole score. There’s the slap shot high in the corner. Sir, no chance on that one. Tony McKney time 1539. 1539 is the time of the goal. Ramsey and Tony Mcknney tied 1539. So Buffalo Sabres score quickly and take a two nothing lead in this second period with 403 remaining. It’s loose trying to get it out in front of the net, but it was held for a face off. Well, how about another look at that last goal. There’s the high angle. Now here comes the drop pass. And the shot. Everybody’s backing in. Maybe partially screened there. See, he was right on his crease. Maybe if he’d come out and challenge a little bit, but um he may then had a hard time of it because it was high in the top corner. Now the Leafs with Parish. A long pass off side to Terry Martin. That’s from one zone to the other. Yeah, Bill, you have to be so aware of trailers. You know, every time there’s a drop pass, who’s got that man? And it’s not always the man that has the puck that’s dangerous. It’s a guy that’s coming late and picks up that drop pass or the the pass in the slot that becomes very dangerous. Well, there is certainly nobody near him when uh the puck came back. He just walked right in there and let her fly. Soon you talk to players and they say, “No, I don’t I don’t aim for corners. I shoot the puck at the net. You know, it’s not all the time can you say, “Well, here’s a corner I’m going to aim for.” Shoot it on the net. You never know what’ll happen. Loose wins the draw. Dun shoots the puck for Buffalo into the leaf zone and it’s Burroughs after it. Knocked it back in the net to Ferish. Fish for Burroughs. Burroughs cleared it to the blue line. Height tried to keep it in. It comes out. Pimon goes after it. And it’s chopped back to the Leaf defense. Ferish trying to get Pima loose on the right wing. Parish will try it again. Over it goes to Burroughs. Burrows. Stopped by Height. The puck is Paymont. Number 99 driving it in and it ends up over to Terry Martin. He centered it for Sitler and Sitler was knocked off the puck. Back for loose. Coming over the line with Craig Ramsey. A backhand and Rick Dudley tried to center it. Hey can’t get it out and the pass for Dudley ends up in the corner loose after that gives it to Dudley a shot and a nice save by Shir on that gets the puck up to Daryl Sitler Sitler his shot knocked down nice changing on the goal per coming back here’s the drive and that was stopped by Surah Zing’s pass over on the wing comes out the center ice shot back in again offside off the stick of John Van Bucks. Tonight’s game is coming to you from Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. [Music] You know, we never had the money to feel really independent until we discovered Amway. Started part time. We’re earning extra income as Amway distributors, bringing others into it. We run it. We’re our own boss. And being more independent is the best security. When someone wants to tell you about Amway, listen and get the whole story. [Music] Well, there you see the time. 229 remaining in the second period. Buffalo with a two nothing lead. Two quick goals in this second period. Puck is shot around back of the net into the corner. Slides all the way over for Anderson. Ceiling has him covered, but Turnbull gives Sagen a chance. Sagenock at center. John Felt back. Kagenock tried to center it and it’s broken up by Perau. Perau just shoots it out and down the ice and it’s Turbo off the boards. Boschman and Anderson broken up by Perau. Perau stick handling trying to get his shot away and he fanned on it. Boschman to Sagen. Sagen trying to go around Sefell. John Feld and Anderson bump together now. Richard Martin over the line. He stops. Tries a pass. It goes to the far wing. Anderson back for it. He’s checked. Ceiling goes into the corner. Martin’s there first. It’s knocked off the boards and Rocky Sagenox shot it behind Boschman and it’s picked up by Van Boxmir. He just shot it right onto Turbo stick. Turbo shoots it down the ice. There’s no icing and we have 121 remaining in the second period. A long pass for Richard Martin. Lease getting back. Martin is covered and here’s to Leaf breaking away by Vendergo. Ricky Bay a shot. The rebound and it’s grabbed off by Don Edwards. Well, now let’s go down to Dave Hodgej. The World Hockey Report takes up much of a second intermission as our cameras go to Holland to meet Tommy Simpson, a former 50 goal scorer for the Toronto Toros in the WHA and Eric Kunhakle, a star in West Germany. And we’ll have Howie Maker’s highlights as well. 107 in counting remaining in the second period. Buffalo leads two nothing. But goes in back of the net. Less than a minute to go in the second period. After it is Dergo. Diligo tried to center it and it’s cleared by Mike Ramsey all the way down to the Leaf blue line. Vive then passes one over for Hickeyi. That’s broken up as the up Sabres come down at center. A pass over the line and Mlanahan number 15’s back hand into the corner. They’re trying to get it out in front. Danny Gear over onto the far side. Playfair into the corner. gear trying to get it over and finally the Leafs shoot it out and down the ice with 22 seconds. Mike Ramsey’s pass, a nice one at center ice for Danny Gear and Mlanahan was offside. Well, the last goal by the Sabres. We got to have another look at that one. You know, Derek Smith, 10th round pick in 1974. And here he is playing on a regular shift. Watch this slap shot. Look at the screen. There’s a screen set up as the defenseman goes down. It’s a high-risising shot. Zer moves after the puck is by him. But you know, if you can time that perfectly, as soon as Salming went down, the puck was going by him. Perfect shot. Dun drives the puck into the corner in Leaf territory. Ian Turnbull back for it. He’s back of the net. 5 seconds left. Turn elects to shoot it down the ice. Two seconds. one. And there goes the bell to end the second period, which saw the Buffalo Sabres score two very fast goals to build up a two nothing lead over the Toronto Maple Leafs in this second period. And so the score at the end of the second period is Buffalo, Toronto nothing. Why don’t we discuss it over beer? You got to have heart. Miles and miles and miles of heart. If you’re going to brew a beer with great taste, there’s only one place to start. And light has got heart. You got to have taste. You got to have taste to put the smile up on your face. on your brain. When people tell you life is in that’s when the grid should start and light has got light and light has got heart. Join the movement to light. Of course, I had this office totally redecorated before I moved in. A few little touches here and there make all the difference. Don’t you agree? You judge wonderfully well, just like you always used to say. Nothing but the best. It’s a collector’s item, Peggy. Please came all the way from Korea. Look, Al and I have a copier just like this in your little travel shop. Really? Are you sure? This is one of the very latest Xerox copy, as you know. Oh, it is. It’s exactly the same. I guess one business can be a lot like another. The game had been scoreless till the Sabres put in two within 37 seconds. Jill Bear Perau’s 34th at 1502 followed by Derek Smith at 1539. And right now things look pretty good for the Sabres with this two nothing lead with Montreal down 4-2 against Hartford at the forum. Both games at the end of two periods. Neither game can be considered over. But if the Sabres win and the Canadians lose, Buffalo goes up by two points in second place. Now, the World Hockey Report. Tommy Shotgun Simpson, formerly with the Toronto Toros, now playing in Holland. [Laughter] [Music] Tonight, the World Hockey Report will take you to Holland and Tommy Simpson, one of the greatest goal scorers in Toronto hockey history. Holland has never been an attraction for North American hockey pros. So, I asked Tommy Simpson why he chose Amsterdam. the availability of a job over here for one thing where I didn’t have one in uh Canada was a big uh big step for me. And are you happy that you came? Uh more than happy. I I don’t think I’d want to go back. I really enjoy it here. No matter what the offer would be. Well, that’s everyone has their price. [Music] Pretty villages full of characteristic churches and houses surround the capital city. Amsterdam offers visitors more than just a hockey league featuring teams from all over Holland, including two local teams. Like many other European capitals, this is a city of open air markets, flowers and bicycles, churches, museums, and canals. Indeed, no trip to Amsterdam would be complete without a boat ride on the canals where Simpson, the former WHA star, talked about his career. I finished up with the world hockey and continued to play hockey in the minor leagues. Whereabouts? In Springfield for a while and then Bingham, New York for a while. And then I decided to leave hockey and was going to quit. And after I had left. I had a friend talk me back into going to Tucson last year and playing in the PHL and it was a lot of fun, a lot of sunshine, but it wasn’t really the hockey I was looking for. Now I’ve finally got the opportunity to come to Europe and play here. Tommy, having played here for a season, what would your advice be to a Canadian boy who wants to play in Holland? Uh the first thing I would have to stress would be come in excellent condition because European hockey they stress that all the time. Conditioning is a major major part. Others I would secondary be flexible because you never know what you’re going to get in Europe. The people culture everything is completely different. The European people very different from you do in Canada. uh your apartments, you don’t have wasted space, you don’t have extra land, you don’t see uh large rooms in a house. Everything is small, it seemed. But it’s expensive. But it’s expensive. But that was a big adjustment for me, adjusting from the luxuries of a of a big uh oven on your stove or in the kitchen or a big refrigerator. We have very small stuff here like that. And that was quite So you’d like to live here on an NHL salary? On an NHL salary. and be able to import a house from Canada. Tommy Simpson was the first player in Toronto professional hockey history to score 50 goals in one season. He was once regarded a little flaky, but today with a wedding on the horizon, he looks at houses in Holland, perhaps to make one of them his permanent home. Tom Simpson made a name here and went to Europe. And Eric Kunh Hawkle is a big name in West Germany who so far has not desired to make a move the other way though there had been NHL teams interested in it. We’ll look at Eric Kunhak and World Hockey Report part two with Hockey Night in Canada continues in just a moment. When your family’s having lots of fun, you want to take lots of pictures. So use Duracell batteries. Look, regular carbon batteries average less than 50 flash photos, but Duracell batteries last longer to give you 50, 100, 200 flash photos or more. My kids could go on and on and so will Duracell. Duracell. The Copper Top battery lasts longer for lots more pictures. Put a set in your life. Mercury’s Zephr, where the value and economy are standard equipment. So is the engineering with advanced suspension, braking, and steering systems, plus a choice of fuel saving engines and comfortable interiors. Can’t you just see yourself in a luxurious sporty Zephyr Z7? For value, roominess, economy, and fun this year, it’s got to be Mercury Zephyr. Put a little zed for zip in your life at the sign of the cat. Eric Kunhakle may not be a big name on this side of the ocean, but in West Germany, the hockey fans know him as the soccer fans know France Beckenbower and others. The world hockey report continues. Dine, Garmish, West Germany, sight of the 1936 Winter Olympics. The subject Eric Kinhackle occupation superstar of the German Federal League. And that’s big number 14 Eric Kinhuckle barreling in on former Czechoslovak national goalie Vladimir Zerilla who plays goal for the Garmish Park and Kirkan team in one game between Lans Hood Kunhakle’s team and Garmish. Kinhakle beat Zerilla four times at 66. Skin Huckle is an impressive figure even without skates. A fitness enthusiast, he runs in parks and hills right to the top of his home in Bavaria, a town called Lance Hood. It’s a scenic and friendly town famous for the marriage of a Bavarian duke and a Polish princess in 1475. I visited Kunh Hackalin’s house and asked him why he keeps turning down lucrative NHL offers. It’s not that I’m not interested. It’s just that right now I’m earning more money in Germany and that’s the reason why I’ve decided to remain here. [Music] Will you ever consider playing in the NHL? Yeah. If the offer matches the figures I have in mind, then I’d accept it immediately. If there is one thing Eric enjoys more than hockey, it’s his family. He has two children and spends all his free time with them and his wife Sylvia. But one can enjoy leisure for only so long. When duty calls, in this case a hockey practice, Eric has to comply. [Music] No matter how you say it, pep talks by coaches are the same all around the world. Important that the forwards and backwards are close that the backwards have positions to play to give a pass. [Music] That’s Canadian Dave Chalk, a Lance Hood defenseman and former star for York University displaying his style. [Applause] Eric Kunhackle is without doubt the most popular player in German hockey history. Quiet-spoken, shy, and sometimes aloner, Eric enjoys serenity and nature. He doesn’t know what the future holds for him, where he’ll continue his hockey battles. But wherever it will be, Eric Shinhackle will leave his mark. Well, the World Hockey Report may be said to continue in a minute because Howie Miker has been a lot of places to watch hockey. West Germany is one place. So we’ll say Aler saying for now or Viner Schnitell or whatever and uh we’ll come back with highlights and how Maker as we return with Hockey Night in Canada in just a moment. In 1882, Canadian General Electric took hold of this bright idea. And today, CGE is the leader in safe, dependable, energy saving lighting for hospitals and stadiums, offices and homes, for roads and cars, planes and runaways. Today, CGE’s WeatherTron heat pump may actually reduce fuel costs by tapping the sun’s energy from cold winter air to heat your home in winter, reversing the action in summer to cool. Now, if you happen to be putting up a building, CGE makes the largest range of electrical products for the construction industry and has the people with the knowhow to help you build it better. On some CGE products, a life could depend. Like this mobile radio system that professionals know they can rely on. So can you. No matter what business you’re in. Progress for people from Canadian General Electric. [Music] How Makers highlights and let’s look at one and then let’s talk about some developments in the NHL. Well, Buffalo, I think they’re the most disciplined team in the league behind their blue line. They have the least mobile and the least skilled defense in the league. It’s got to be Scotty Bowman in system. But having said that, we want to show you one fell who can handle a puck. Van Boxmir gets the puck here. And watch the bottom of your screen. Richard Martin. The pass goes from Van Boxmir to Martin. Super pass. Okay, now watch Perau and Ceiling work the basketball pick play. Hold it right there, fellas. It’s a twoon two right here. But just watch what Perau does to Turnbo. Ceiling cuts in behind. What a beautiful play. Look at just takes Turnbo right out of the way. creates open ice for Ceiling and Ceiling gets the shot. Hold there, fellas. Now, here’s the problem with the Toronto Maple Leaf defense. The whole cotton picking team. Watch this. Okay, let her go. That’s one of the best defenseman in the league with the puck. And he’s colorblind. Ceiling. Now, watch him check. Watch him check. Watch him curtsy. Oh, you don’t play the game of hockey that way at all. He makes a bow at Ceiling. Ceiling puts the puck underneath the stick and gives it to Martin and Sarah comes up big. The Leafs have to take the man in. They’re in trouble. Howie, it started, I guess, with Scotty Bowman, uh, general manager, also coached, though he wasn’t always behind the bench. Punch him then did the same thing very recently. And now we have Ted Lindseay in Detroit, and we have Harry Syninden in Boston, though Cindon is back at the bench. What do you make of all this? I really don’t know. I can’t understand the Boston deal. I can All right, I can I can sympathize with the owner in Detroit after three years. I think maybe they should be a heck of a lot better than they are. But Boston, uh, look at they’re the second best goals against in the league. You judge a coach on the goals you keep out of the net. The coach supplies defense, the general manager supplies offense. And, you know, certainly offense is like the weather. It comes and goes. Defense is constant. It’s hard work. And there’s no way in the world you can fire the Boston coach. He’s the second best goals against in the league. Well, Cinden says that if this season is to be a success in Boston, they have to win the Stanley Cup. They’ve been close. Close again just isn’t good enough. And he didn’t think that was possible the way things are going. And you know, I’ve heard a lot of reports that the Boston situation wasn’t that different from the one in Detroit that the players and Kraton just weren’t really having the relationship that they needed. And maybe it started with Bobby Schmottz uh way back when. That that certainly was the case in Detroit. The Red Wings won a good game. Strange to see coaching changes this late in the season and obviously it’s strange to see a team that still could finish second in the league uh change a coach less than 10 games away from the playoffs. Thank you, Howie. And we’ll get to the third period here live from Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. This is Hockey Nightch. Well, I’m more energy conscious now and I realize that uh going too fast I’m burning too much gas and it’s costing me too much money. Tire pressure is as important as as keeping it in tune. Well, with the smaller car, it’s easier to handle. It’s a lot cheaper on gas. I do save myself some money if I slow down a little. Cuz I like going down. It’s more relaxing. I get to read the paper and uh by the time we get to the office, I feel better. Actually, I’ll slow down. Take it a little easier now. Try life with less gasoline. You just might enjoy it more. [Music] Canadian Tire has been in this business for 50 years. We know cars and our service centers prove it. We have up-to-date equipment, a huge instore parts department, and highly qualified mechanics. We can handle anything from mufflers to an engine transplant. And our guarantee is good at over 300 Canadian Tire service centers across Canada. We can do it. It’s for people like you. Canadian Bill Hod and Gary Dornhoff are back here in the gondola and the score after two complete periods of play is Buffalo 2 and Toronto nothing. In the summary in the second period it was Jill Bell Perau is 34th at 1502. Smith his 23rd at 1539. Shots on goal were 13 to9 in favor of Buffalo. And from the face off the puck goes down in behind the Buffalo net. It’s done. Clearing it to the line. The Leafs keep it in. Po knocked it into the corner. It’s knocked off the boards and Rick Dudley just shoots it out to center ice. Turn over to Boya Salman. Salman back to Turnull. Turn at the blue line. A long pass and Po can’t reach it. Down loose. Number 20 for Buffalo. Knocks the puck but not over the line. Terry Martin brings it back. We have Buffalo player. I believe it’s loose. It’s loose. He’s uh down on his hands and knees. Comes trainer Frank Christie out to have a look at him. Didn’t see what happened there, Bill. We’re following the play. He’s all right. From Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, hockey night in Canada. Putting in more gas and putting out more money. Maybe your car needs a tuneup with Fresh Champion spark plugs. They can improve fuel economy. It’s like getting more gas in your tank and more money in your bank. Fill her up with Fresh Champions. Just watch the left part of your screen. There is There it comes. He just got a piece of it and but loose he’s up and ready to go. So play gets underway again as Borius and goes for Turbo. Turbo picking his way to center ice. Shot the puck by Bill Height. It goes to Edwards. Edwards back to Height. Height rafts it off the boards and Dudley makes sure of it to center ice. Buffalo are leading by a score of two nothing offside as two Leaf players were trapped inside the Buffalo blue line. Well, in the third period, it’s Hartford four, Montreal two. The Islanders and Blackhawks are tied at three. Bully has scored a third Chicago goal. Goring and Troche have added goals for that tie. That’s in the second period. St. Louis on a goal by Babage lead the Capitals. Big game for Washington. And Colorado, Valacets lead the Detroit Red Wings. And Detroit, they need a win badly. Okay, Gary, we’re all set to go. That’s Derek Smith out there with McKGney on the left wing. Danny Gar on the right side. Elise clear the puck out. That’s Lorie Boschman out there with Anderson and Sagen. Puck cleared by Clay there. And it goes to the Leaf defense offside as number eight. Tony Mcknney was well inside the blue line. Well, he’s come on of late. Very smart hockey player. aggressive along the boards and opposite to him is Rocky Sagenuk. Reached the 20th plateau Wednesday in that Winnipeg game and he is the ninth leaf player in history to score over 20 goals. And you know who holds that record for Leaf rookie? None other than Howie Miker way back in 1945-46. Okay, Gary, the puck is cleared out to center ice. Shot right back again. Now it’s bounced out over the line. Sagenog trying to get Boschman loose on the right side. Cleared it in. Finally knocked out by Buffalo to center ice. Richard Maulharn who’s out for the second time tonight. Shot the puck right back. That’s picked up by Mike Ramsey. Ramsay’s pass for Gear is knocked right back again. Larry Playfair and to Danny Gear. Too far for Smith. Pass off the boards for Anderson. And it’s knocked right back up for Gear. Gear then loses to Sagen. And Sagen shoots the puck in, but the Leafs are changing. Buffalo a long pass up at center ice. Goes all the way to Turbo. Turbo over to Bora Saling. Salman then shot it down through center. There was nobody there. And Jim Shanfeld just shoots it right back in again. Sarah knocked that down with his glove and the Leafs come back. Hickeyi on the left wing over the line gets his shot. Edwards has got it and he’s going to hold it for a fence off. Tonight’s game is coming to you from Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. It’s Glidden’s dazzling anniversary celebration. Now for a limited time, you can get famous spread satin flat latex wall paint for a spectacular $10.99 or less a gallon. The same price as last year. And there’s the time that is elaped so far in the final period. 2 minutes and 18 seconds. Buffalo continues to lead two nothing. Dergo out there with Hickeyi and Vive. Seanfeld for Rick Martin. He’s knocked off the puck. Martin in tries to cover up by falling on it and he does. I might add, Bill, that the the record by Howie Maker as a rookie was 27 goals. That’s going back a long way. 45 and 46 or 46 47 year. How old does that make How Maker? [Applause] I think we’ll have to ask him. All set to go. Dergo Hickeyi goes back. Comes over here to Turnville. Turn the screenshot. It’s right in front of the net and Perau just knocked it down the ice and it’s Saling off the boards for Hickey. Then it’s picked up by Van Boxmir. Van Boxmre to Rick Celling. Then for Martin, he’s bumped by Salman. Herbo gets it out to center ice. Shfeld for Martin again. Stopped by Salman who shoots the puck in back of the net. Don shot the puck down the ice and it’s wide of the net. Going back to get it is Sming. And that’s icing called against Buffalo. pacing Joe Croer back and forth trying to get things going. And Leafs have scored a lot of goals this year. In fact, they’re tied for fourth with 278 goals, but unfortunately tonight they’re going against the best defensive team in the league. Buffalo Sabres having a hard time getting that puck by Donnie Edwards. Daryl Sitler with Martin and Pimo comes back to Maul Hearn. Maul Heharn let his shot go. Edwards stopped that. The rebound is cleared out past Dudley. Down to Maul Hearn again over to Ferish. Fish then off the boards for Terry Martin. It’s knocked by Bill Height down into Leaf territory. Mal Hearn goes after it. Watched by Loose and they get a whistle. Well, as we look at Erie Sir first, the the triple header there on the wall. Salman Sitler Sagen. Erie Sir is has had a pretty good start for the Maple Leafs. He’s seven and three in 10 games and eight of those games the Leafs were outshot. So, he’s been very effective. Leafs were making a change. Turnbo and Saling were coming out, but the referee says no. [Applause] loose. Craig Ramsey and Rick Dudley are the forwards for Buffalo. The puck in the corner. Mh. Hearn being covered, but the Leafs get it to the line and out. Martin knocked it down into Buffalo territory and it’s shot right back. Headedley shooting it over out of the left wing to Craig Ramsey. Ramsey over the line. Knocked off his stick and cleared by Mullarn. And that went by height, but it hit his pad and therefore there’s no icing and Edwards touched it as well. Now then Dave Ferish loses to Craig Wy out to Turnbo. Turn in for PO and the Leafs just can’t move as they’re being pounded by the Sabres with their forche. Dudley in for loose. Loose centered it right in front and SA covers up. This is hockey night in Canada from Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. [Music] It takes calm, unhurried patience to brew Brador. So take the time to appreciate it. Brador from Molson. Take the time. Well, the two coaches like a game of chess trying to make the right move to Of course, Scotty Bowman right now has that two-goal lead. And it looks pretty good the way the Sabres are checking. Leafs just can’t get anything going. Now they’ve got Mongrain out there at center with Ger on one wing and Flanahan on the other. Now the Leafs with Borius Salman trying to get something stirred up goes to the boards. They pile in there and a play is called. Well, since Wolf Paymont has come to the Toronto Maple Leafs, he’s in fact in his last 17 games, he’s 11 goals and 15 assists. So, he has certainly made a contribution since coming over and playing with the Leafs. Doesn’t hurt to play with Sitler either. 15 minutes 28 seconds remaining in the game. Buffalo 2 Toronto nothing picked up there by Larry Playfair. Playfair of Buffalo off the boards out to center ice. Turn number two of Elise. Shoots it right back in again off the boards. It’s knocked to the blue line but not out. Here’s a chance for the release four of them and a shot by Salman was wide. Back comes Danny Gear. He gets his pass through for Derek Smith. He’s dumped. Puck goes to the corner. Cory Boschman shot it around on the boards. Buffalo keep it in. Larry Clayfir and he lost it. Anderson just failed to get to it. Now number two Turbo over on the wing. Back to Boschman at center. Turn follows through over the line. Takes the shot and he just fired wide. The rebound. Here’s a drive. That’s wide by Ferish. And Buffalo just shoot the puck down the ice. That’s over the red line. Fish will touch that. Icing is the call. 1433 left. Well, that’s a safe way of doing it. When in doubt, throw it out. You like that little rhyme there. [Music] Now, it’s it’s frustrating. You know, for a player, you like to have a little room to maneuver out there and when you get a hold of the puck, have a chance to do something with it. But the Sabres, they just don’t allow you to do that. As soon as the puck comes on your stick, right away there’s a man beside you. So, it makes it a difficult situation and the Leafs are finding that out, especially in this third period. Okay, Gary, we’re getting set with Kaziki now out there at center. Hickeyi on the left wing, Ellis on the right. So, we have Bill Ker making a few changes now to see if he can stir up the Leafs who are trailing by two. Kaziki is 14. The puck goes down the ice. Martin having difficulty with his hockey stick. Hickeyi comes back with Ellis over the line. Hickeyi still has it. Tried to pass to Perau. Intercepts. Perau for Martin. Martin a backhand for Perau. Perau goes over the blue line. Perau off to the side. Sets up Martin. Martin took a shot. He fired it wide. Perau then losing the puck. It’s up here for Hickeyi. Number 16. Gave it away to Martin. Martin drove it wide right in front of the net and ceiling couldn’t put it in. Neither could Van Boxmmere and the Leafs come back. Hickeyi down the right side over the line for Kaziki. Gets it back to Ellis and Ellis couldn’t get it. Now he shot it over on the right side to Seling. Sming in back of the net. Rolled it right in front. Martin and it’s cleared by Perau the rest of the way down the ice. Turn will go back to get it and we have 13 minutes and 30 seconds remaining in the game. Buffalo leading two nothing. [Music] Well, next Saturday, March the 29th, the Edmonton Oilers here at Maple Leaf Garden. Very big game for the Oilers. They can’t afford to lose any. They’ve only got six games left. Four of those are on the road and one will be here in Toronto. Daryl Sitler, Martin and Po takes a shot and he blasted it wide. It goes to the boards where Rick Dudley number nine shoots it around for Craig Ramsey number 10 loosees after it. Number 20, he’s in the corner. Centered it and the rebound goes to Turbo. Turbo fired it for Salman and it was behind him. Shot back in again. Dudley goes after Turbo. Salman flipped it to the blue line. Bill height couldn’t keep it in. The lease turning Martin shot it over onto the far wing and Dunn drives it back. Salman stopped that. It’s loose at center ice. Dunn getting his pass over the line. Intercepted by Ian Turbo. Turbo trying to get away. A long pass for Martin. Martin let one fly and that was caught by Don Edwards. Sitler covers his man along the boards. It’s cleared to loose. loose. Gets it up on the right wing to Dudley. Dudley of Buffalo gets it back. It’s Craig Ramsey passing it in. That shot around on the board. Picked up by Bill Height and for Dudley. Dudley loose and Ramsay. And it’s loose back of the net. Tried to center it. Loose and Settler bumped together. The puck comes to Bill Height. Heights shot and the lease cleared out the center ice. Done over for Height. Height’s pass goes into Leaf territory. Dave Ferish goes back for it. Gets it around to Richard Maul Heharn. Malharn the pass around to Sagen. Sagen in his own zone. He handed it to Smith. There’s a shot to score. Tony McKignney on that pass. Smith just saw him in front of the net. That was it. Well, it was a giveaway by Rocky Sagenuk. And you know that’ll happen a lot more times before his career is finished. But if he can learn from those mistakes, there’s Mcknney all alone. He just wheels around on his backhand. I don’t think he even realized that two were right in the clear there. Anytime you go up the middle, boy, you have to be awfully sure where you’re going to put that puck. And there’s the backhand. I think it caught Sira kind of by by surprise there. That’s a big goal for the Sabres now. Give them that threegoal cushion. 813. We always say if you’re going to come up the middle, you better know exactly where it’s going or shoot it awfully hard or pass it awfully hard so the opposition can’t intercept. The puck at center ice fer Martin for Perau and stealing back to Perau going right in and goal and coming out to make the save. Back comes Hickey with their Lego. The Lego goes into the boards. Hickeyi trying to dig it out. He does. It comes back to Burroughs. Stopped there by Van Boxmmere. And Van Boxmir shoots it down the ice. That’s over the red line and that’s icing with 1113 remaining with the score. Buffalo 3 in Toronto nothing. This is hockey night in Canada. A $500 check. It’s yours with every new Thunderbird and Cougar XR7 bought in Canada before April 1st. $500 from Ford of Canada. And Thunderbird and Cougar are rated at 24.8 m per gallon. Ford is really putting its money where the mileage is. That’s $500 back from Ford of Canada on every new Thunderbird and Cougar XR7 and $300 back on new Fairmonts and Zephers. See your Ford or Mercury dealer today. [Applause] Now, let’s have another look at that goal by the Savers. There’s Seen cutting through the middle and tried to lay it out there. It was intercepted. And now here’s Mcknney just the backhand. Actually had another man with him there. They could have gone two on nothing and the uh the quick release resulted in the goal. [Applause] Buffalo leading by a score of three to nothing. Lego Hickey and Vine Burroughs and Dave Ferish. Puck is shot down the ice again by Buffalo that goes over the red line. Parish gets back to touch it and we’ll have another racing. And now let’s go to the Montreal forum where the Hartford Whalers are playing the Montreal Canadians. Yale MU at 5 minutes and 44 seconds. Here’s Lombair coming in. Hold it in front. Robinson again. They scor. Well, a good rush by Lambbear down the ice and he’ll throw it in front. The goalie out of position, Garrett. Now look at Robinson. Once, twice, one more crack at it. There we go. And Robinson has scored two goals. And it’s now Hartford five, Montreal four. They’re starting to come back. And from the faceoff here with the Buffalo Sabres leading the Leafs three nothing. They go to the corner. Puck kept in by Hickey. A backhand. Edwards gives it to Larry Playfair. Playfair out Buffalo. shoots it off the boards. Knocked down. There’s shot right back in again as Salman was given a jewel by Playfair and Playfair took a swipe at the tempers are getting a little thin right now. Few disagreements. had that happen at least three or four times tonight, but there’ll be penalties on the play. This game is coming to you from Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. [Music] Things go better when you and co get together. Everybody’s looking, searching for the best taste, living life. Things go better when you and get together. Ah, Coke’s the greatest. [Applause] Larry Playfair. Well, they just announced the penalties. Playfair 2 minutes for slashing and five for roughing. 913 is the time. So we have 10 minutes and 47 seconds remaining in the game. Buffalo ahead three nothing. Gets it over on the right side. Back up at center. Knocked back inside the blue line into the corner and it’s Ian Turbo with it. Number two. He’s back of the net. The teams are playing five aside. Borius Salman gets a pass over to Turbo. Turbo gets it up at center ice. Pimol can’t get anywhere. Turbo will try it to Seling. Salman fakes the shot. Bill Heights skates him off. Cleared by number 10 Craig Ramsey over to Rick Ceiling. Ceiling back. Here’s a chance for Dunn. Dunn going in and he went over top of Sir who came way out of his net. Back comes Turbo. Turbo with a hard shot and Edwards got his pad on that and held it out. It was a low low shot. [Applause] [Music] Well, it was a good breakaway by Richie Dunn in the breakout pass. And look at Sierra. He came out. He saw the opportunity to go get it. And what a collision. He probably saved the goal there. Quick reflexes by Sira. Gary Sah number 31 in the goal tonight for the Toronto Maple Leafs. And we’re looking at the penalty box now. And that’s Rick Vive. And from the faceoff, the puck comes back to Burls. Burls had it hit Anderson. And Buffalo recover in their own zone. Buffalo clearing the puck over the line. Puck came out in front as Shfeld had a chance. Shanfell number six. Ron Baxmere number five. It’s kept in Corau and gives it back. Danny Gear score. Well, I was just going to mention about Danny Gear who’s closing in on a a second 50 goal year. That was his 48th of the year. Some nifty stick handling by Jill Bear Perau. There’s the giveaway in the Leaf zone. Now, look at this here. Boy, guys, you have to take Perau’s body. You can’t go fishing for that puck. Look at that good wrist shot right low along the ice. There he comes again. Wasn’t it really wasn’t a hard shot, but the the position right along the ice into the far corner. So Buffalo now have gone ahead four nothing in this final period with 9 minutes and 21 seconds remaining to play. Gear leaving the puck there for Van Boxmir and it’s Jubil Perau putting on quite a show here in this final period with a stick handling now he’s got it again coming up through center comes to the leaf flying tried to stick handle through and Turbo just gets rid of it to center ice Van Boxmre over on the left side play is called there’s going to be a bench penalty too many men on the ice and Scotty Bowman does not like it oh boy that that was a Close call though. You know, the player was almost on the had one foot into the box there. And Scotty, he had a few uncomplent words to say to the linesman. That’s going to result in a in a penalty. There’s man Boxmir talking to Finn as Scotty Bowman looks on live from Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. Hockey night in Canada. On this Canadian destroyer, about 250 men work as a team with some of the most advanced electronic equipment in the world, helping to keep Canada strong. If you’ve got what it takes, there may be a future for you in maritime command, full-time or part-time. There’s no like it. Ask us about you. You’ll find us under recruiting in the yellow pages. [Music] Well, there are the coaches back of the bench. Eddie Bowman, I mean Roberts and of course Roger Neielson. Puck goes over to Turnbo. Turbo shoots the puck in wide of the net. Bill Height picks it up. Height shot it off the board. Boy Salman keeps it in. The penalties to Clifford and Vive are over. Turn goes over to the far side to LGO. A pass for Hickey. Hickey gets it out in front and it’s grabbed by Edwards. Let’s go to the action at Montreal where the Hartford Whalers are playing. The Canadians at the forum for the net goes in back of the goal. And now Gain starts out on a three for the Canadian. It’s Robinson coming in. The penalty is over. the point score. Well, the Canadians are certainly coming back. What a what a duo there of Gainy and Robinson set up La Point. Nifty little shift. Garrett never really has position on that play. Can’t get good solid ground. And the Canadians and Hartford are tied at five. And of course, that’s a big game for Montreal. They got to stay even with the Sabres. And it looks like the Sabres will win tonight. And we’re back live here in Toronto as the puck comes back to Turbo number two. Turbo goes in along the boards. Here’s how to hickey. Hickey goes in. Shot wide. Zing tried to move up and it was chopped down the ice by number 10 Craig Ramsey. Least go back. 818 remaining in the game. Four to nothing for the Buffalo Sabres. Dergo then to Turnbo over on the firing wing for five and that was stopped. Now it’s Gloria Saling being chased back. Sean Feld and Vag were mixing it up. Now it’s Sterling go up at center over the line. A pass to Hickey. Hickey shot it back of the net. It’s Shawnfeld and Shawnfeld just shoots it out to center ice. Ian Turbo for Borius Saling. 48 seconds left in the penalty that Dudley is serving for too many men on the ice. Now Derliggo up at center over the line. Still has it. Dergo tried to back pass it. Five goes back of the net. Dudley has him covered. The puck goes loose. Dudley finds an opening and shoots it out. Turn to Salman. Over for Turnbo. Turn at center. Shoots it for the right side and that’s knocked down. Terry Martin gets it back to Salman. Then a pass to PO. PO over the line gets the shot and he fired it high and wide. The rebound is brought down by Ceiling. Ceiling of Buffalo. Over the line with Van Boxmmere and Van Boxmre went back and the Leafs bring the puck out as Dudley returns to the ice and Buffalo are back at full strength. Martin and Van Boxmere and Van Boxmir ends up on the puck. Well, now we’ll go down to Brian McFarland. In a surprising development, Fred Kraton was fired as Boston coach today at the forum tonight. Larry Robinson having a big third period. Two goals, one assist. They’re tied at five. Montreal and Hartford will be along with all the scores and results on the NHL tonight right after the game. [Applause] Zitler with Primo and Martin Burroughs and Ferish. 6 minutes 47 seconds remaining in the game. Four to nothing Buffalo. [Applause] All set to go. Puck brought out by Ceiling. Ceiling gets it over to Martin. Martin dropped it for Ceiling. Ceiling tries to go around Ferris. Ferris fell. The puck came out in front. It’s cleared by Seanfeld. And then the Leafs recover trying to get the puck out. Long pass at center. Goes into the corner and they’re going to get a whistle. [Music] Sunday, March the 30th on Sports Weekend, it’s the World Superstars competition from Freeport in the Bahamas. Brian Bud defends his world title on superstars. Sunday, March the 30th. [Music] [Applause] Now there’s Joe Koser back at that Leaf bench and looking a little apprehensive and up at the clock. Time running out here with 6 minutes and 22 seconds remaining to play in this final period. Boschman out there with Anderson and Sangak. Cleared out by Derek Smith. Derek Smith and Danny Gear. Danny there shoots and sir stopped that. Sagen over skates the puck given a bump. It’s knocked back to the blue line and it’s Mike Ramsey with a long shot. That’s off the glass. Goes to Danny Gear. Came out in front. Knocked back over to the left wing. Ramsay drove it right back in again. Seemed to get a whack on the hand for his effort. A long pass for Sagen. Sagenock was hit by Mike Ramsey. Then another shot goes wide. The puck comes over on the far wing. Here’s a break coming up over the line. Mcknney, he took a shot. Zer didn’t know where it was. Here’s out in front again. Gear and Mcknney Tagen trying to get a hold of it. McKenney’s trying to center it again. Gear right in front of the net and Shir took that one away from Derek Smith. Well, good pressure by the Buffalo Sabres. Actually, they had about three chances. The first it was a twoon-one. And here comes another one behind the net with Danny Gar sends it right out in front. Smith just couldn’t get a hold of it. Zero covers up. But the Savers, they apply a lot of pressure. They do a good job of forchecking. And one thing that they have done in the offensive zone, they don’t cough up that puck. They just hang on to it and look for that open man cuz it’s a long way back when you give it up. On the face off, the puck is carried down the ice into Buffalo territory. Van Boxir goes back to get it. It goes in from Burroughs over to Ferish. Back to Burroughs. Burroughs long shot deflects off a leg drawing back to get it Seanfeld. Shanfeld number six tipped it still loose. Finally knocked out by Mong Brain. Here’s a twoon one. They’re closing in and he couldn’t get it out in front with the score. Buffalo four and Toronto nothing. This is hockey night in Canada. Like it. This 1980 Scout Traveler isn’t mine, but it could be yours. It’s part of the grand prize in the great family treasure hunt contest during March at Kentucky Fried Chicken Stores. If not, you can still win this grand family prize, the great family treasure hunt contest. Get details from your newspaper or at Kentucky Fried Chicken Stores. And there’s Gaddy Bowman with the Buffalo Sabres a four nothing lead and 452 remaining in the game. Just ask him once, Bill, what the most important part of the game is and he’ll tell you defense and every team that he’s with, he stresses defense and it certainly wins a lot of hockey games for you. Okay, Gary, back of the net we have Dave Ferish. Parish cleared it and Burroughs got it the rest of the way out. Here’s a chance for Dergo. Delel dropping it to Pat Hickeyi. The shot that went over top of the net. It’s kept in. The cut goes over to the side. Gone back. Mirror goes after it and they finally get a whistle in the Buffalo zone to the right. Billy Dgo, a first round draft pick. the Vancouver Conucks, you know, coming to Toronto and trying his luck here. He gets the teaching and the coaching. Think he could be a top-notch player. Harry Neil of Vancouver said that he certainly has the ability. Unfortunately, he just wasn’t able to do the job in Vancouver and he said the change would probably do him a lot of good. So, time will tell. Lego wins the draw. Back to Burls. A shot. Edwards got a score. Pat Hickeyi finally puts one by Edwards to make it four to one. Well, we just talk about young Dergo and he gets the draw cleanly. There’s a shot and Edwards can’t find it. He was out there to challenge which is what he should do. There’s the shot from the point by Burroughs. Now he does. He thinks he has it in his pads. Hickeyi is jolly on the spot. He’s got the whole open net. [Applause] Edwards thought he had it. Just couldn’t get over in time. Bill Height to prevent that goal from Dave Burroughs and Bill Dergo. Time 1536. 1536 is the time as the puck is taken by Shafeld gets it up. Richard Martin went down gets back up again. The puck bounces over to the far wing. It’s at center ice and it’s broken up and there’s Joe Bear Polo and Parish got a piece of him back up for but it’s offside at the Buffalo blue line. 403 remaining in the game. Joy Dgo skating to the bench, but what a good take out by Ferish there on Jill Bear Perau because there’s not too many guys that on the open ice area ever make good contact with Pearl. Pat Hickeyi the goal scorer on that last play. Loose out there at center with Craig Ramsey and Rick Dudley on the wings. Bill Height playing on the defense as the Sabres shoot the puck down the ice. Turbo going back to get it and it’s called for the icing and it’ll be brought all the way back into Buffalo Sabres territory. 347 remaining. That’s a guy I used to have to watch all the time. Philadelphia when first came to the Sabres is Rick Martin. And one time you hit him a lot, it was a very effective way of playing against him. But after a while, he start giving it back and he doesn’t take uh anything from anybody anymore. Goes out there and plays a strong game. And what a shot he has. Hut goes back to the net to Bill Height. Height goes over onto the wing for Ramsay. Turbo gets it over to Pim. Po tried a backhand. Gets it back to Mull Hearn. His shot goes to PO. PMO cutting in front tried to get a shot and that’s broken up and cleared out and Buffalo are twoon-one. Loose going in with Dudley. Loose shoots and he the deflection was wider than that. Ramsay then gets it for Dudley and his backhand is just wide. Ho lets the puck go. Sitler gets it out to center ice. Height shooting the puck back in again. Four to one Buffalo lead 306 remaining in the game. Wolf Pay gave the puck away. There’s a shot by Derek Smith. Now then Mcknney, Tony Mcknney tried to hit Danny Gear and the Leafs failed to get it out. Mal Hearn fanned on it. The Sabres try to pounce on it and Sitler sends Payon down the right wing over the line. Payos drive is stopped by Mike Ramsey. Ends up in the corner. Danny Gear. Here’s three of them up for Derek Smith. There’s his shot. Ser stopped that. Knocked into the corner. McKenney went after it. The Leafs have it. They start back. A long pass over here for John Anderson. Anderson having difficulty and Ian Burrows. Anderson goes back and it’s cleared out by Ferish to Burroughs who shoots the puck wide to the net off the boards for Perau. Perau dropped it back. Mike Ramsey number 23 couldn’t get it out. It’s kept in now. Then Larry Playfair up through center. He took a joke from Farish and Fishard his leg on it. Puck goes down the ice. Comes back at center. Intercepted by Ceiling. Ceiling goes in with Martin. Martin to Ceiling and Ceiling couldn’t get a shot. 140 left. Borius Saling being watched by Celying. Celing gets it back to Martin. Martin takes a shot. He scores. Martin picked the bottom left hand corner. Well, it was just a matter of time. You know, the Sabres have had four twoon-one breaks in the last five or six minutes and never capitalized on one. And here was a giveaway and a perfect pass to Rick Martin. Takes it over to his forehand and a low wrist shot. on the glove side and that’s something he does so well. 16 time 1829. There’s another angle of the goalie. Quick wrist shot far corner 5-1 Sabres and they just keep coming at you. That’s right, Gary Dornapper. That’s Martin from ceiling. 1829 Buffalo 5, Toronto one. the puck back of the leaf net. 120 that came out in front. A clearing pass is stopped by Dudley and Ted had to stop that. Now it’s Saling getting it up on the right side. Leaf player was jammed in on the boards. That was Rick B. The puck back at center ice for Dudley over the blue line. Minute of play in the game. Gets the puck into the corner. And it’s Derliggo knocking it to the other side. And we have 53 seconds. Puck comes loose and the lease chop it down the ice. It’s rolling [Music] and it rolls to the line and over, but they wave it off now. Then Clayfire’s pass knocked down at center ice. Cleared back to the leaf line and Burroughs gets it over on the right side. Hey, Ferris. A pass for Terry Martin. Edward stops the puck, clears it into the corner, and it’s picked off. And a shot by Puma is covered up by Don Ed. There’s the last goal scorer in that play, Richard Martin. Well, you’re looking at a team that is certainly a legitimate contender and with the likes of Scotty Bowman behind the bench, that has to give them a little more confidence. Now, the Savers, they have a lot of draft choices on their their hockey club. In fact, I look down the list here. They have six first round draft picks and three second round picks. And that’s that’s the way you build winners with your draft picks. Danny Gear comes back out. He’s out there with loose. You know, Bill, coming off four straight Stanley Cups, I think I’d have confidence in the man behind the bench, too. That’s for sure. Going back for it is Dave Burroughs. Burroughs back of the net being watched there by Craig Ramsey. 10 seconds left. The puck goes out to height. Bill height just goes back to the blue line. Flips it at center. Burls can’t get anywhere near it, but Terry Martin does. 1 second left and there goes the bell. The game is over and the Buffalo Sabres exploding in the second period and getting three more in the final period saled it away against the Toronto Maple Leafs. In just a moment, our three star selections. [Applause] [Applause] [Music] Can you imagine trying to photograph an Olympic gold medalist like JeanCllet Keily? It’s quite a challenge. The first star Joe Bear Perro, second star Derek Smith, and the third star Tony McKnney. on behalf of now. Well, there are three pretty good Buffalo forwards. Uh, a good job by the Buffalo defense and a steady job by Don Edwards. So, he made 32 saves. Not too many of them were difficult, Howie. No, but I think he had to make about three good saves when the score was two nothing or the game still in doubt. He’s a super standup goalender. Very exciting to watch. The Buffalo Sabres are now a point ahead of the Montreal Canadians in second place. Montreal came back, got a tie against the Hartford Whalers to keep their unbeaten streak going. It’s now 14. Well, what a race that’s going to be. And an important one because a Buffalo Montreal play, of course, should they get that far to the semi-finals or or beyond home ice could be a big difference for those two teams. Well, I think the key position is to finish in second place. I don’t think Philadelphia is going to be around any longer than the Islanders were last year. That’s right. And I would think then whoever finishes second is going to start the series and finish the series in their own barn. And if Buffalo does it, they’ll be tough. If Canadians do it, you’re going to see them in the finals again. Oh, what do you base the prediction about the Flyers? The way they’ve been playing lately or an idea that they weren’t really as good as their streak indicated? No, I think you can play them tight. I really do. I don’t think that anybody this year has really played them tight. Uh they you can score goals against them if you dump them in, go pick up your wings, and play them for a nothing tie. Uh I don’t think their goalending is as good as Buffalo’s goalending. uh and some other clubs in the league, but Boston in particular. And I think Boston, if they meet him, can outmuscle them. Well, Boston, of course, the situation changes there. What will Harry Syninden’s coaching do? What will the removal of Fred Kraton do? Right now, the Bruins are well ahead of the Atlanta Flames in their first game with Cinden behind the bench. The score tonight, Buffalo, and the Maple Leafs won. Buffalo is in second place. The Leafs remain 11th. And we’ll return with Hockey Night in Canada in a moment. Sunday night at 7:30. Good one for the whole family on the muffins. Unlike a Canadian farmer, this Turk is sewing a great mishmash of seed strains. These primitive strains have lasted centuries. They are so diverse that no one disease will fell the whole crop. But what nature couldn’t do, man just might. Modern agriculture is destroying the old seed strains. The scientists call it genetic erosion and are warning about a disaster. Tuesday at 9:30 on CBC. [Music] And now, the NHL Tonight from our Hockey Night in Canada control center in Toronto with up-to-date scores and results from around the National Hockey League. Hello again, everybody. Quebec at Los Angeles just about to get underway. Dion has a chance to move further of Gretzky in the scoring race if he can pick up some points there. Speaking of Gretzky, let’s go back to last night and the highlights with Edmonton. [Music] Oilers started quickly and were all over the Penguins all night long. Wayne Gretzky and Don Ashby combined to control the puck in the Pittsburgh zone. Ashby making the play with a perfectly timed pass for defenseman Pat Price who beat Greg Mil to the right side. The Penguins got even in the latter stages of the first with the Oilers short-handed. Defenseman Randy Carile shot from the point deflecting in off an Oiler stick. It skidded behind Ron Low and the first period ended even. Early in the second, Dave Lumbley played it back to Colon Campbell from a faceoff in the Pittsburgh end. Campbell shot baffled Greg Mil who got a piece of it as it trickled across the line for a 2-1 Edmonton lead. Seconds later, Kevin Low made the play for the third Oiler goal as Low controlled the puck along the boards and then slipped a pass through for Dave Hunter who had no trouble connecting for his 11th of the season. The Oilers kept the pressure on. Don Murdoch’s rebound came right back to Dave Seamano as he whipped in his sixth of the season for a 4-1 Edmonton lead. Still in the second, a two-on-one break for the Oilers, perfectly played by Stan Weir, who waited for Don Ashby to his right. Ashby found the short side and the Oilers led by four with four goals in 7 minutes and 5 seconds. In the third, Wayne Gretzky took a pass near center ice and skated up the right wing, outmaneuvering the defense to slide in his 43rd of the season behind a belleaguered Greg Mil. Shortly after that, Dave Seamco made the play at the Penguins blue line and fed a pass for Gretzky. He counted his second in a row. The Oilers had a 7-1 advantage. Pat Price made the play on the next goal, but Gretzky made the move. After taking a pass just inside the blue line, Gretzky worked in and had Mil at his mercy as he counted his 45th of the year and the hattick. For Gretzky, a four-point night. And for the Oilers, playoff hopes a little brighter after a 9-2 victory over the Penguins. having a lot of fun tonight. [Music] Marcel Provo started his first day on the Detroit job saying if the Red Wings couldn’t beat the Conucks then they didn’t deserve a playoff spot. He then took his wings to the Coliseum and he won possibly for Bobby Cron. The Canucks gave the Wings a little help midway through the first. Brett Ashton’s pass to Boulderv goes to Netamsky at the blue line. He blasts the air and pass to beat Hanland. Second period, the two celebrated Redwing first round picks, Felino and McCort, teaming up to make it two nothing. This year’s pick goes in across the blue line, drops it back to McCort, and he counts his 27th of the year. George Lyall made it three nothing to start the third. Then Thomas Gerine came back for the Canucks. Spoiled tonight for Roi Vash in his 699th NHL game. And it’s three to one. Fino made it 4-1. Then the Wings pick up on another bad Vancouver pass. And away goes Nettomansky one-on-one against Hanland to his 32nd of the year. With the celebration of the hometown fans, Tiger Williams goes it alone end to end. Crosses in front of Hanland, heads for Vashon to make it 5-2 as Detroit and the Canucks swap places in the overall standings. [Applause] [Music] Two questions come out of those games. Can Pralo revive the Red Wings? Can Gretzky win the scoring title? The NHL tonight continues in just a moment. Let’s face it, everything looks terrific with a fresh coat of paint for a while. But I want this great look to last, and it can. With Envirroite plastic finish, it dries as hard and as glossy as enamel. But unlike enamel, Envirrolyte washes out with water. That’s right, with water. You can use Envirrolyte on wood, metal, even plastic. And Envirroly resists rust, so it works great outside, too. You should try Envirrolyte. It costs a little more, but it’s worth it. Just before we go to Dick Irvin at the Montreal Forum, let’s take a look at the overall standings around the NHL. And we of course see Philadelphia on top with 108 points. Then Buffalo, Montreal, Boston, Minnesota, the Islanders, and Chicago all tied there with at the same positions. Well, actually, here we go to the Rangers. Atlanta, St. Louis, Toronto, Hartford, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh as we’re moving along quickly as we look at the standings. Then Detroit, Vancouver, Washington, and the rest follow in that order, the nonplayoff performers. Now we’re ready for Dick Irvin at the Montreal Forum. Okay, Brian. Well, the Hartford Whalers have had quite a week. They played three games in four nights. Two against Montreal, one against Philadelphia, and every game ended in a five tie. Wednesday night against the Canadians, a home ice, the Harford Whalers were down 5-1 in the third period. Came back to tie it. Tonight they blew a 5-2 lead here in Montreal. It was four nothing Hartford before the game was 28 minutes old. 4-2 in the end of the second. And here now early in the third. Greg Carol scores from Fodio and Allison at 406 making it 52. But in the following two minutes, Larry Robinson playing in his first game after missing six because of injury. Scored twice in the space of 19 seconds. And then the Canadians get a fifth goal. At the tail end of a penalty killing stretch, Pierre Larouche, you see him just stepping back onto the ice. Robinson and Gainy lead the rush up the ice and they set up Gil La Point. Also back in action after an injury and La Point beats goender Garrett from close range at 917. The Canadians still had over 10 minutes but couldn’t catch up all the way. And that’s the way it ended. 55 the Canadians at Hartford here in Montreal. Now for the Toronto highlights. Here is Dave Hodgej. Well Dick, as you know, the Montreal Canadians are used to winning the VZNA Trophy or maybe we should say Scotty Bowman is used to coaching Vzna Trophy winners. It looks like he’ll do it for the fifth straight year as coach and general manager of the Buffalo Sabres. And the Sabres showed why they’ll win the Vzna Trophy or should without much trouble in a 5-1 victory over the Leafs tonight. The teams played scoreless hockey till late in the second period. And it all started with a nifty move by Joel Bear Perau. A big rebound for him off Richard Martin shot and he put it past Yuri Sirhaw in the leaf net. Now 37 seconds later after all that defensive scoreless hockey, the Sabres quickly opened a two nothing lead. Derek Smith, a drop pass from former US Olympic star Mike Ramsey. And it’s two to nothing at the end of two periods of play. In the third period, Tony Mcknney who had a big night with his linemates Derek Smith and Danny Gar. Got a pass from Smith and quickly put a backhander behind Sirha. And then in the third period, Danny Gar going for his second 50goal season. Gets number 48. And Jelbear Perau gave him a nifty pass. G releasing it quickly right along the ice. The game ended five to one after those four straight Buffalo Saber goals. Back to Brian. Well, David, we’ve mentioned the scoring battle between Marcel Dion, who’s on top now, and young Wayne Gretzky. The margin or the difference there between the two coming into the action tonight is five points. LA playing Quebec tonight. Colorado leading Detroit two to nothing in the second. St. Louis over Washington 3 to one there in the third. Boston leading Atlanta four to one also in the third period. And Chicago and the Islanders just completed a game. It’s 4-4. We’ll be back next week. Edmonton at Toronto. That’s the national game. So long everybody from Toronto.
